Wendy's New Breakfast Menu Comes to Canada on May 2

By Simon Hung

The most important meal of the day is coming to Wendy's, where the burger chain will be launching their all-new breakfast menu in Canada on May 2.

Originally teased in February, this will be the first time Wendy's will serve a dedicated breakfast menu across all Canadian locations, as the chain looks to emulate the success of other well-established fast food breakfast competitors like A&W, McDonald's and Tim Hortons.

Wendy's breakfast menu will include a new signature coffee, half-moon Seasoned Potatoes and the Breakfast Baconator.

At launch, the Wendy's breakfast menu will consist of seven food items, including some that pay homage to Wendy's familiar non-breakfast favourites.

Signature Items

  • Breakfast Baconator – a grilled square sausage patty with two slices of cheese, six strips of bacon, a freshly-cracked egg, covered in a warm Swiss cheese hollandaise-style sauce and served on a premium toasted bun
  • Frosty-ccino – cold brew coffee with chocolate or vanilla Frosty flavour, served over ice
  • Seasoned Potatoes – half-moon seasoned potatoes with a blend of spices, served crispy and piping hot

Classics

  • Classic Sausage or Bacon, Egg & Cheese Sandwich – a freshly-cracked egg with your choice of a grilled square sausage patty or oven-baked smoked bacon, plus melted cheese on a freshly-toasted and buttered breakfast roll

Biscuits

  • Sausage or Bacon, Egg & Cheese Biscuit – a freshly-cracked egg on a fluffy buttermilk biscuit with your choice of grilled square sausage patty or oven-baked smoked bacon and melted cheese
  • Sausage Biscuit – a grilled, square sausage patty on a fluffy buttermilk biscuit, baked fresh in-restaurant

Croissants

  • Sausage or Bacon, Egg & Swiss Croissant – a freshly-cracked egg with your choice of a grilled square sausage patty or oven-baked smoked bacon, covered in savoury Swiss cheese sauce and served on a 120-layer flaky croissant

All breakfast items are made with Canadian Grade A eggs and Canadian beef (shaped into Wendy's iconic square patties, of course). In addition to the seven mouth-watering foods, Wendy's will be introducing an all-new signature coffee, brewed with 100% Arabica beans from South America and roasted in Canada.

"Our culinary team spent two years conducting extensive research to deliver this breakfast menu that is bound to change morning routines," said Wendy's International Culinary Innovation Manager Hayley Kianoff. "We tested 15 different menu concepts with more than 3700 Canadian quick service consumers to make sure we got it right. The Breakfast Baconator and the Bacon, Egg and Swiss Croissant received high ratings by consumers, while our seasoned potatoes are all but guaranteed to be among fan favourites."

Wendy's breakfast menu is scheduled to launch at over 400 locations across Canada on Monday, May 2 and you can taste the hype in-restaurant or by ordering through your favourite food delivery apps.

    • I don't understand these burger chains. McD's already does all day breakfast sandwichs and Wendy's also offers those same sandwiches all day.

Here's a concept for the burger chains to consider changing to ....ALL DAY MENU. You can eat whatever you want when you want. If you want a Big Mac or a Baconator or a Whopper at 9am, you can have anytime.

    • Used to offer the same breakfast as Mickey D 's back in the '80s. Faux scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns. Not sure when they dropped out.

    • Will be interesting to see the Wendy’s/Tim Hortons combo restaurants each offering breakfast food.

Back in the day, Harvey’s had the best breakfasts of any fast food chain.

Loved Harvey's breakfast! They brought it back 2 years ago but stopped and closed the location near me. Don't sleep on A&W breakfast

Yup, A&W is the one to beat. I make a point of using the $5.99 classic breakfast coupon available on a regular basis,

I don't see it in the current batch of A&W coupons, just the Sausage & Egger combo for $4.99 and the 2 Bacon & Egger combos for $9.99.

Yup, it expired a week ago. It used to be in every set of coupons, last couple times it seems to alternate with the 5.99 burger combo.
      I was displeased.

    • Tim's breakfast (and most of their food, for that matter) is inedible. They will probably use the same suppliers. I don't have high hopes.

It's 2022, not 2014. Try again. Tim Horton's is even using real eggs now. Not bad at all.

I am only aware of Wendy's breakfast in the States.
The few locations in Canada might have been testing something with just the basics. Now they're going all out.
It will be all locations this time so, if they're serious about competing with other choices out there they have to have something good.

Not sure which other locations but the one at Empress Walk definitely had breakfast as recently as 4-5 years ago

They were doing their own thing as a franchise + Breakfast. They ended this two years ago.
This time round (end of April) the breakfast menu is coming directly from head office and it will be a different offering than what was offered before. Available at all (or most) locations.

    • Would love to see them launch iced coffees in american sizes like Starbucks has. Cannot seem to find anyone with a really big Iced coffee like Starbucks Venti and Trenta's. Mcdonalds, tims and country styles are all quite small for their 'larges'

I imagine that as an english muffin bun with a sausage patty, topped with bacon, cheese, sauce and a fried egg.

It's a logistical nightmare. You need extra grill space, extra holding trays, extra space on the prep table, etc. It's not impossible, but it's a lot easier to offer a few limited breakfast items all day then to offer your full burger menu all morning. I doubt the sales volume would make up for the additional cost and headaches.

      Agreed. Tims is complete garbage.

While they still operate joint locations, Wendy's hasn't owned Tim Horton's since 2006. Since 2014, Tim Hortons is owned by Restaurant Brands International which also owns Burger King, Popeye's and Firehouse Subs.

Yeah, so if we didn't tell you, it would automatically be crap? STOP assuming. Stop judging things by who owns what. Just give things a chance.

I never said that. I said I didn't have faith in Wendy's due to ownership. As it turns out I was mistaken about the ownership, but my point still stands. I don't have much faith in restaurants owned by RBI, so if they bring out a new product, my expectations will be very low. Doesn't mean I'll never try it or that it's guaranteed to be crap.

I also don't have high expectations of fast food places to begin with, which is why I don't visit them much

As I said, stop judging something because of who owns it. Tim Horton's didn't have to start serving real egg, but they do now. & as I said, you judged Wendy's by ownership. Stop doing that.
Tims is not crap and Wendy's...it's hopefully going to be better. (we will see...)

The last time I went to Tim's it was absolute crap. I wouldn't drink their coffee or eat their food for free. RBI didn't do them any favours although Tim's shot themselves in the foot even before RBI got involved.

As for judging, no, I'm not going to stop. RBI has shown their true colours.

I've been to a few Tims locations where I'll never be back, but that doesn't ruin it for the whole chain. Their coffee is not horrible (as a double double) and they are using real egg now in their breakfast sandwiches.
Credit is long overdue where it is long over due. BK was already microwaving their burgers before being sold to RBI & Popeye's is still managing to be good. I have not had a chance to check out Firehouse subs yet but I will soon.
It is not very intelligent to judge something strictly by who owns it.

The thing that upsets me is the very idea of doing absolutely anything to be great and you'll still say it's horrible no matter what they do. NO MATTER WHAT.
You have decided something before anything. That is wrong.
      That's the problem.

The Tims of today is not the Tims of the 70's or 80's, sure, but it's also not the Tims of just a few years ago either. & yes, I do admit it takes a double double to make the coffee good enough, but the food is not as bad as it has been in recent past.
I appreciate their efforts and their improvements.
It won't surprise me if Wendy's is still better, but at least Tims isn't as bad as a good 5 years ago...or even a few years ago.
