Tim Hortons Rolls Out Changes to their Rewards Programs
By Kate Musgrove
February 22, 2023Starbucks made big changes to their Starbucks Reward program last week, and as of February 21, 2023, Tim Hortons has a new rewards program with different redemption levels -- and a new formula for earning points!
Here's a look at what's new:
Previously, Tim Hortons customers earned 10 points per visit -- no matter how much they spent. Customers will now earn 10 points per $1 spent. This is a nice change if you tend to spend a lot per visit at Tim Hortons. However, the redemption levels have changed significantly. Here's what you'll get now:
- Redeem 300 points for: Classic Donuts, Specialty Donuts, Hashbrowns, and Cookies
- Redeem 400 points for: Brewed Coffee, Tea, Dream Donuts, Bagels, and Baked Goods
- Redeem 600 points for: Hot Chocolate, French Vanilla, Iced Coffee and Wedges
- Redeem 800 points for: Real Fruit Quenchers, Cold Brew, Classic Iced Capp, Box of 10 Timbits, Yogurt, Frozen Beverages and Espresso Drinks
- Redeem 1100 points for: Breakfast Sandwiches and Soups
- Redeem 1300 points for: Farmer’s Wrap, BELT, Lunch Sandwiches and Chili
- Redeem 1800 points for: Loaded Bowls & Wraps
This differs from their old redemption levels. This is what you could get prior to February 21, 2023:
- Redeem 50 points: Classic Donuts, Cookies, Hashbrowns,
- Redeem 70 points: Brewed Coffee, Tea, Dream Donuts, Bagels, and Baked Goods
- Redeem 100 points: Classic Lemonade, Hot Chocolate, French Vanilla, Iced Coffee, Wedges
- Redeem 140 points: Real Fruit Quenchers, Cold Brew, Classic Iced Capp, Frozen Beverages and Espresso Drinks, Box of 10 Timbits, Yogurt
- Redeem 180 points: Breakfast Sandwiches, Soup
- Redeem 220 points: Farmer’s Sandwich, BELT, Lunch sandwiches or chili
With the old program, you'd earn a free coffee after seven visits, since you accumulated 10 points per visit. If you were buying a regular coffee at each visit, you could earn this reward with as little as $15. With the new program, you'd need to spend $40.00 to get the 400 points for a free coffee. Now, if you have big orders at Tim Hortons, you'll find yourself accumulating points much more quickly under the new program rules.
How does this compare to other coffee rewards programs? Starbucks just increased the amount of stars required to get a free coffee to 100 (it was previously 50 stars). Users earn 1 star per dollar spent (unless they are ordering through the Starbucks app with a Starbucks gift card -- then they'll earn 2 stars per dollar spent). So you'll have to spend quite a bit more to earn a coffee at Starbucks. But the McDonald's MyMcDonald's program gives customers 100 points per dollar spent, and you can redeem 20,000 points for a free coffee. That means you need to spend $20.00 to grab that reward, and that's a better return on spending than you're getting at Tim Hortons or Starbucks!
In general, though, the best coffee rewards program is the one offered by the restaurant you like best!

View allYay! $10k win! Its real! It says right there. Im not dreaming right?
Yah buddy. It says you won $10k.
Then they cancel it. What a buzz kill!
The level of service quality has fallen off a cliff. It's disgraceful and has become a reason for me to stop spending money at ANY of these places. Points programs are a simple way to trick people into coming back. Some fall for it, some don't. For me, the rewards programs are irrelevant, the quality of service is so far below acceptable that I am no longer a customer.
My wife asked for a coffee 2 days ago, since TH was next door to a grocery store I was at I grabbed her a coffee from Tims. There was garbage overflowing from waste bins, garbage on the floor where you pick up your order. It was disgusting. If they care that little about the front of the house, imagine what it's like in the back.
i activated 2x the points offer on all eligible transactions (transaction being more than $0.10) this week. i activated it before 10am, then an hour later, I paid for a small coffee and extra large tea, paid $4.14 (= $3.94 plus gst). i only got 49 points. i think i should have gotten 78 points - can anyone confirm this? - if you also have same 2x points offer and how many points you got when you bought something? TIA
I can't remember how much I had because I don't go regularly, but I think it was at least $10.
Right now buying 14 Ice Capp’s will allow me to redeem for 1. (Which is already $56)
Under the new system it will take 20 purchases taking the dollar value up to $80 to get 1 free ice Capp.
Redemption value going from 140 to 800…
That’s over a 5.5 Multiplier!!
Tim’s has also taken great care (since the penny was eliminated) to make sure that all individual item prices end up having to “round up” after tax, so that they always win when someone pays cash…. (Obviously some exemptions with a multiple item purchase but they are few and far between)
What a joke.
Definitely using up all my points before the “conversion”kicks in and I get screwed out of point value.
I have them in my offers.

I'm surprised coffee costs 25% more points than baked goods, but I guess given retail pricing that makes sense.
What a joke.. spend $40.00 get a free coffee.

I will happily delete the app and save my spending habits from going to corporate!
However, the devaluation is indeed disappointing. It's clear that they are attempting to reward their higher spending customers better which makes good business sense but for the person who only gets a coffee this is a nasty devaluation as you will have to spend $40 for a free coffee when currently you're getting a free coffee after spending only ~ $14 (7 x $2 for a large coffee).
Free coffee is 100 stars (but now includes iced) - so basically spend $50!
and a latte/refresher/frap/cold brew is 200 stars - so basically spend $100! (was spend $75)
save the time and money spent at these joints.
Yes get up few mins earlier and make your coffee to go.
