The Best Disney+ Deals and Discounts in Canada

By Thomas Kenzaki

Disney+ is the hottest new streaming service in Canada and you’re undoubtedly looking for ways to save some money on your subscription. Here are the best ways Canadians can save money on Disney+.

Subscribe to the Annual Plan

Disney+ is $8.99 per month if you subscribe to the monthly plan. If you subscribe to the yearly plan the cost is only $89.99, a savings of $17.89 (or almost 2-month at the monthly subscription price).

The US market received special subscription pre-order deals when you signed up for 3-years, but sadly those options never made it to Canada.

Use Discounted Gift Cards in Apple iTunes or Google Play

If you subscribe to Disney+ through iTunes on an Apple TV or iOS device, you can pay for your subscription using your Apple ID balance. Apple App Store & iTunes gift cards sometimes go on sale for 20% off. The yearly plan ends up costing just $72 ($6 per month) subscribing this way.

Alternately, subscribing through Google Play for Android devices can net the same savings using Google Play gift cards.

AIR MILES

If you're an AIR MILES Collector, you can earn 100 AIR MILES Reward Miles by signing up through the airmilesshops.ca website.

Splitting a Subscription

Since Disney+ allows 4 concurrent streams, up to four people can watch at a time per subscription. Why not split the cost between family members in your household and save some money in the process?

    • Johnnie To fans who subscribe to Disney+ may want to start investing on VPN. Next two months will be a doozy. We're getting Septet on New Years Eve. And then, sometime in late January, Wai Ka-Fai's Detective vs The Sleuths arrives on Disney+.

Few other Johnnie To classics also came out on Disney+ last weekend. The 2007 film "Triangle" and Benny Chan's "A Moment of Romance 2" (which To produced). Actually bought Triangle on dvd many years ago but never got around to watching it. But my dvd was locked to region 3 and I don't have any region free dvd players in use at the moment.

    • There's at least one theory that the guy who bought Marvel & Lucasfilm will mark his Disney re-tenure by selling it to Apple
I wonder if the poster meant selling Marvel/Star Wars to Apple, opposed to the entire disney company.
IT is singular, THEM would've (not would of BTW) been used to indicate a sale of more than one property
I forgot Iger also acquired Pixar during his first reign

    • Would the US anti-trust people even allow Apple to buy Disney? Highly doubt it, it would be like allowing Google to buy Amazon.

I don't see why Disney would sell those two IP's. They've printed money off both of them, and their one of the main attractions to get people to use Disney+. They must of made the money back they paid for those IPs long ago. It's probably all profit now (well except for streaming, but they're working on it).

    • Anyone know the date when the original AVATAR movie will be returning to Disney+? It quietly disappeared when they re-released the movie in the theatres recently.

Tonight, I'm just waiting to see the newest trailer for AVATAR 2 during half-time of NFL's Monday night football. That's about 10 minutes away. 😎
      It came back yesterday.

    • That's a shocker. Chapek's certainly doing things differently with mixed results, but he was dealing with unprecedented pandemic challenges. Usually CEOs get more time to prove themselves before the Board gives the boot ...

I think/fear they will cut back on planned original Disney+ contents to save money.
The plan for D+ was to increase the price slowly and gradually, by $1 every couple of years. Increasing it in the US by $3 USD in Dec feels like a drastic, greedy move heading into a recession, wouldn't be surprised if Iger reverses that decision and keeps the US price under $10.
But they will need to cut back everywhere the next couple of years, not just content, need to turn profitable to pay for the rest of Hulu and NBA rights in 2024-5 which should cost them over $80 Billion USD combined.

That's a dilemma. Less content, less subs?

    • I just saw this on my feed and I had to cross reference it to see if it was true.

Glad to see Iger stepping back in. I always felt Chapek was too overly obsessed with profits and nickel & diming everything. Disney world be better off without him, as he was apparently alienating a lot of loyal Disney fans.

Hopefully we don't hear in the next few hours that Chapek will be crossing the border because he's being hired by Robbers or B'hell. 😄

    • Wow, at 1st I thought it was a joke, Chapek had just signed a contract extension. Disney has $ to burn man...

Maybe Chapek wanted mass layoffs and the board wanted nothing to do with that.
Guess we'll get more details in the next few days.

    • This two parter just popped up on Disney+ Hong Kong yesterday morning. Source material was great since it was a novel written by Jin Yong, but I've also heard this adaptation was pretty awful. They casted a 40+ year old Zhang Wuji when he's supposed to be fairly young. I don't even know what to say about Donnie Yen playing a 100 year old man, lol

Netflix Hong Kong has the Jet Li version.

VFX was also apparently done by the same folks who worked on T2: Judgement Day. And yes, it was an awful awful sequel.

    • Another batch of old Hong Kong movies just dropped on Disney+ Hong Kong today including Beast Cops, and Gen-X Cops. Gen-Y Cops which featured pre-Antman Paul Rudd is not on Disney+ yet.

    • Disney+ Hong Kong just dropped their release schedule for the month of November. Initial D and Motorway is coming tomorrow. Seen Initial D countless times but Motorway was really a sick film. Benny Chan's Gen-X Cops is coming to Disney+ (Nov 18) and Wong Jing's most recent two-parter Kung Fu Cult Master reboot is expected November 19th.

Also, just announced Disney+ has Johnnie To's Septet 七人樂隊 coming New Years Eve, Far Far Away 緣路山旮旯 (Dec 24), and Wai Ka-Fai's Detective vs The Sleuths 神探大戰 (late January 2023).

    • Anyone know or can confirm the new pricing is correct when it happens in Dec. 2022?
Currently have 1 year free from Rogers Internet sign-up, and it's going to expire end of this month, Nov.

I also have an AMEX offer for Disney+: Spend $11.99 or more/month and receive a $6 statement credit for 6 months. This offer expires Sept. 2023
The Dec price increase will be in the US only as they launch the ad-supported tier there before they confirm CA launch next year. I think the $5.99 plan with ads for NF will force Disney to be closer to $10CAD with ads here, we'll see.
    • Up to 152 million subscribers, as NF keeps losing them D+ keeps adding them.
They're launching their plan with ads at the same price as their current plan on Dec 8 in the US and raising prices on their ad-free plan. It suggests that when they do the same in Canada next year the plan with ads will be $11.99CAD and the price of the ad-free plan will most likely increase to $15.99CAD.

    • Wow, that's surprising because I did not enjoy Hocus Pocus 2 and I have nastalgia when thinking about watching Hocus Pocus 1 as a kid.

I thought some of the straight to Disney+ Pixar movies were much better, like Soul, Turning Red and Luca.

Wait, does this mean that Hocus Pocus 2 was watched more than even Black Widow that went straight to Disney+? No way, that's crazy (although that movie wasn't great either lol). Does this include all the Marvel movies that end up on Disney+? I also find that hard to believe.
Black Widow is the 1st movie I thought about also. There was a significant difference, when BW first premiered on D+ you had to pay $30 extra for it for the 1st 3 months.

What?! That must mean that the majority of the 100 million D+ subscribers must be women.
Maybe they missed a huge opportunity to make $ by releasing it in theatres 1st.

      Article muses about that
Still it's one thing pushing some buttons at home and another actually going out
Maybe pomegranates and grapes but Blade Runner 2049, Tron Legacy (must be more disappointing box office sequels I'm forgetting of initial failures with post decades of cult-ivation)
OTOH I'm doubting HP2 cost too much

I remember liking more the short version but I don't remember the difference since it's been 15 years since I saw this.
I didn't mind the longer cut but the shorter cut was executed perfectly. Also, Disney announced the October 5th launch of the "I Have a Date with Vampire" trilogy on Disney+ in Hong Kong. It's been rerun to death but it has a strong fan following.
