From December 31 to January 5, 2023 you can get 7,500 Bonus PC Optimum Points for every $50 spent on Netflix gift cards at Shoppers Drug Mart.

So you want to save money on Netflix? I’ve got some good and bad news for you. The bad is that the popular streaming service never directly goes on sale. The good news is that there are a few other ways to save on your subscription fees and I’ll outline them below.

Stock up on Netflix Gift Cards when they go on sale

You’ve likely seen Netflix gift cards being sold at retail stores. Every so often you’ll find a promotion where you can get bonus rewards program points (e.g. PC Optimum points) or bonus gift cards when you buy Netflix gift cards.

Here's an example deal at Shoppers Drug Mart where customers received 7,500 bonus PC Optimum Points for every $50 spent on Netflix gift cards. This works out to getting 15% back in points on your purchase.

These deals typically only pop up about 4 times per year (usually at Shoppers Drug Mart, Real Canadian Superstore, and Rexall), so make sure to stock up with enough to get you through at least 6-months to be safe.

Tip: Make sure to set up a RedFlagDeals Deal Alert for “Netflix” so you don’t miss out on the next deal.

Pay with a high Cash Back or Points Credit Card

Many credit cards offer high percentage returns at grocery stores as part of their rewards program. If there are no current deals available, you can leverage your credit cards rewards program to purchase Netflix gift cards at those stores and earn cash back or points. A good example of this is using the American Express Cobalt card which gives you 5 points per $1 spent at select grocery stores.

Some cards such as the Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite card offer higher returns for recurring payments (e.g. monthly Netflix subscription fees). Use it to pay for your Netflix subscription and you’ll earn 4% cash back every month.

Check your wallet and make sure you’re using the best card to pay for Netflix to maximize your savings. If you’re looking to upgrade, you can try our new credit card comparison tool to help you find your next credit card.

Share an Account

Netflix’s terms of service state that you can share an account within a household. What exactly they consider a household isn’t specifically defined though.

If you live under the same roof with others, why not split the cost with everyone using it? Netflix’s Premium plan offers 4 concurrent streams which means you could easily share with up to 3 other people helping bring the average cost per person down.

Those looking to share beyond your physical household may want to consider the fact that Netflix has recently started testing ways to crack down on password (account) sharing.

With the recent hike in price for Netflix in Canada, finding a deal on Netflix has never been more needed. By keeping up with the latest Netflix deals on RedFlagDeals, you should be able to save 15% or more on your subscription fees.
