Prime Day 2020: A RedFlagDeals Recap of Amazon's Annual Shopping Event

By Thomas Kenzaki

Prime Day 2020 was the Prime Day that almost didn’t happen. The yearly shopping event which typically takes place in July, was indefinitely postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic but eventually got rescheduled for October 13-14. Find out how it stacked up to last year in our Prime Day 2020 recap!

  • Total number of Amazon deals shared during Prime Day: 325
  • Prime Day deals posted per hour: 6.77 per hour
  • Combined total views of all Prime Day deals: 1,735,156
  • Most viewed Prime Day deal: Free $6 credit with $30 Amazon gift card purchase (81,236 views)
  • Most discussed Prime Day deal: Free $6 credit with $30 Amazon gift card purchase (340 replies)
  • Most popular Prime Day deal: Free $6 credit with $30 Amazon gift card purchase (744 upvotes)
  • Least popular Prime Day deal: Zojirushi Pressure Induction Rice Cooker $512.99 (27 downvotes)
  • Total posts about Prime Day: 7,213

This year our members shared less deals, but they received more views and generated more discussion over Prime Day 2019. The most popular deal again was a "free money" deal for buying an Amazon gift card. Almost everyone can make use of a $30 Amazon gift card so why not get a free $6 to spend on top of that?

After Prime Day 2019, Amazon stated that it was their most successful Prime Day ever. This Prime Day the same claim wasn’t made, however they did say that “Prime Day 2020 marked the two biggest shopping days ever for small and medium-sized businesses” and that “Prime members saved more than $1.4 billion”.

There were some great deals this year, but many RedFlagDeals members posted saying that last year's Prime Day was better. Many Prime Day deals shipped and sold by Amazon were quick to sell out, including the popular Fire TV Stick 4K at $44.99. Items from 3rd party sellers seemed to have better availability overall.

With all that said, a delayed Prime Day is still better than no Prime Day in my opinion.

For those of you wondering what the most popular deals with the RedFlagDeals community members were, may I present to you the following Top 10 lists.

    • 20 years old, that's why it hasn't died. My Sister has a 10+ year old one as well.

I just replaced a Danby. The thing actually started rusting! Then it just died. Past warranty date and I did the credit card insurance claim but who wants to drive out to the boonies to the service centre. I forget what the one before was. Something I picked up at Canadian tire.
I guess Danby is a crap shoot.
I also have a Danby portable air conditioner that has been used 7 seasons with only one hick-up so far.

I have a Danby that is supposed to be crap but refuses to die yet I've been using it daily for almost 20 years!

It's working out pretty well but it is a lot more powerful than my old one so I have to adjust cooking times down. Third microwave in about four years so I hope this one lasts.

    • I guess I got lucky, at least on day 1. Both the microwave and the carry-on that I wanted came up.

and the motherboard I had to buy last week didn't come up, Lol!

Oh, and the toaster I wanted was $22.99 until a few weeks ago when it went up to $34.99. Now there is a prime day deal for $21.84. $1.15 savings!

Checked status as it wasn't delivered by 5pm.
Status 7:13am, "Parcel held by the carrier because the delivery address is incorrect or incomplete. Please contact Amazon with more address information"

Funny because we've possibly made 100 Amazon orders in past 6-7 years including 2 orders last week.

Here's 10$ saying the "return package" will never arrive back to Amazon.
      Way to go Canada Post.

Edit: Thumbs up to Amazon Support. Replacement order will arrive tomorrow (assuming the same mailman doesn't cancel that order).

    • well looks like I am getting my items earlier than originally estimated.

One order that had an estimation of Monday delivery is out for delivery today. Another order that estimated Saturday is also now out for delivery today.
Purchased an item with less than an hour left on Prime Day. "Free 2 day shipping" was scheduled for Tuesday October 20th.
Amazon tracking says "on the way but might be late. Your parcel can still arrive on Tuesday"

Clicked on the Canada Post tracking code and the status is "out for delivery".

Is it today, next Tuesday or later....

    • Anyone order anything yesterday with "one-day free shipping" only to not actually get one-day?
Yesterday I ordered something that said one-day/same day free shipping. If I go to my order details it shows shipping speed is one-day.

However after ordering I noticed the guaranteed delivery date is Saturday.

For what I got coming, 3 days isn't going to kill me, so I can wait. But I am curious if anyone else had this happen to them as well.

Happened to me as well, though I didn't even get an option for one day/same day.

Ordered my items on Wednesday and "two day" shipping had it arriving on Sunday. That's not two days, but whatever. Got my shipping update this morning and now the items are arriving next Wednesday.

    • Overall, very disappointing Prime Day.

I was hoping for some price errors and double discounts like previous years, but there was none.
I actually found one and ordered and they cancelled it next day. That was prime day for me.

    • I shipped all my orders to be picked up at Canada Post so never got the 1 or 2 days prime shipping. I live in an apartment and even I am home all the time (WFH for good), they never bother to buzz me or come up to my unit, they just leave packages on the counter at the mailbox area that anyone could just grab them (even if they are yours or not). Last time I found my package along with 10 others, when I went down to check mail :(. I don't understand why they are doing that

Well, it wasn't a surprise though. I placed my orders on Tuesday. Before I checked out, it specifically said the delivery date would be Saturday regardless of whether I picked Two day or One day.

My orders are apparently coming tomorrow though.

Eventually you'll get to the option where you can call them or chat with them. They've made it harder to reach their customer service team and you really have to dig around for it.
Its a little harder to find but it was extremely fast to contact them, they offer callback service that took a few seconds to be called once I hit the send button on the webpage.

    • I found a lot of the better deals were of off brand crap, end of line, and weirdly specific things that I don't need or could ever think I would spend money on. I was hoping for better Philips Hue deals than 20% off myself but since I am not in immediate need of those items, I can wait for another deal similar to this. I just can't justify spending money right now on 'would like to have or try out' items.

I also saw a couple items rebranded exclusive to Amazon (yes, other companies do this too) and inflated regular price to make the sale price look even better. Even though the EXACT same product is sold elsewhere at a much lower regular price.

    • Their guaranteed delivery is useless these days. Prime used to mean guaranteed 2 day shipping. Now I often see prime shipping that may take up to a week. Seems like more and more product is designated as an add on requiring minimum $25 purchase.

They've taken over a huge lead over their competitors and no longer need to offer incentives to consumers. We need more competition. Collectively consumers need to direct their money to other companies.
I wonder if it has to do with certain items? I did have prime but cancel. Now when I place an order they would say it's going to take a few days but instead, I would get it the next day lol. Now, I took advantage of Amazon offering 30 days Prime trial and I did buy some stuff but it's going to take a few days to get it LOL. I was better off without Prime

    • Very disappointed and frustrated with Amazon this week. Ordered a critical part for my PC with "guaranteed" delivery by 8pm Tues Oct 13. Without the part my computer is unusable.
Its now 24 hours past the guaranteed delivery time.

I think they throw that word around (guaranteed) and it doesn't mean anything. My fault for believing them I guess.

It feels like a very dishonest marketing tool when a guarantee isn't met. Maybe they should say "very likely to be delivered by". I'd be much more understanding.

I'm a Prime member for a reason, quick shipping at no additional cost. I understand that its a busy couple of days but my order was placed on the weekend, long before Prime day.

Time to call in and see how they can make me a satisfied customer.

Pandemic and economic uncertainty I had to restrain from spending this Prime Day. Did keep my eyes open from that "Can't say no to" deal but didnt see one.
Did get a Fire TV Cube which am pleased with. But I do regret not getting another Dot Echo for 25$. Maybe there will be a deal for the newest Dot on Thanksgiving.

      Cheers, KH

I feel like best deals are Amazon products or companies that rely heavily on Amazon to sell their products. I would even guess that Amazon must provide a very good incentive or compensation to discount their products heavilu during Prime day to boost interest.

I was pleasantly surprised. I got some cool things.

Until next gen come out and there's actual widely available stock that's probably not happening. If anything the prices are inflated because of stock issues on the new cards. It might be well into next year at this rate by the time we get some cards discounted.

Boxing Day is supposed to be one day only but the flyers start coming out often more than one week in advance then it becomes boxing "Week" then "Held Over", it goes on and on...
Amazon Prime Event in only one merchant, two days and it dies very fast.
About Prime membership, do like everyone else: get a Free trial then cancel.
Use a different email address if necessary.
      They accept debit cards also.
Also I feel like with Black Friday and Boxing Day, people just post the flyers as though that's the job done. Most of the discussion actually ends up being about the flyer as a whole. I'd much prefer it if people split it up into actual products that they think are a good deal. If that's the case, there would be no difference between Prime Day, PF, BD or just a regular day where there are deals.

I didn't do research. I ended up getting what I was used to, and looked around for the best deal I could find. The thing is that the plantronics voyager is designed for working on a computer. It has a flip down microphone. I see that the Sony you referenced are just headphones, so for me that wouldn't work, and the bose does have a microphone. I do wonder what the sound is like compared to the Plantronics that has a flip down microphone compared to one that doesn't.

The bose makes sense to me if you are working from home and don't have a lot of noise. I think that the plantronics voyager makes more sense to me in a noisy environment in ensuring that my own audio is clear to the other person.

I needed something for online meetings and looked far and wide for a deal. The website seemed a bit odd that it didn’t have pictures for everything but it came in the mail and is a genuine product. They may also have other options.

Fortunately if you do get something on prime you can cancel it before it is delivered or return it if you find something cheaper and better suited to your needs.

      Thanks, GoBigOrGoHome.
Would you mind sharing which model did you get and how has your experience been (with feedback from listeners on the other side) in a noise environment?

Any reason, you chose those over Sony WF-1000XM3/B or Bose QuietComfort 35 (Series II)?

Which one you thought could balance cost/quality for listeners (in noisy surroundings) better?
