Sony is Raising PlayStation 5 Prices in Canada

By Simon Hung

Sony is raising the prices of PlayStation 5 consoles in Canada, less than two years after its initial launch.

In statement issued on August 25, Sony Interactive Entertainment President & CEO Jim Ryan noted that high inflation rates and the current global economic environment necessitated the price hike, which will impact seven regions worldwide. In Canada, both PS5 models will now cost $20.00 more than their initial launch price.

  • PlayStation 5 Console with Blu-ray Drive - $649.99 (previously $629.99)
  • PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Console - $519.99 (previously $499.99)

This new pricing reflects standalone PlayStation 5 console prices, but the price hike will very likely impact pre-built bundles like the PS5 Horizon Forbidden West Bundle released earlier this year. Standalone PlayStation 5 consoles have also become somewhat of a unicorn in Canada, as many retailers including Best Buy, Costco, GameStop and Walmart often require an additional purchase (usually an extra controller) in order to get the console, which inflates pricing even more.

The PlayStation 5 price hike will take effect immediately and impact other international markets including Australia, China, Europe, Japan, Mexico and the United Kingdom. Interestingly, PS5 prices in the United States will remain unchanged.

Originally launched in November 2020, the PlayStation 5 is Sony's latest-generation gaming console and remains one of the most sought-after products in 2022. While the console has been easier to find in 2022, stock is still relatively scarce and sells out very quickly at retailers across Canada.

    • I was at bestbuy last week and they had a ps5 on display as a demo. I was like, really, people can't even get one and you waste it on a display. As if Sony needs any advertising or marketing to move the systems. Facepalm.

    • I dont care....
I just want to get one....
      still cant get it....
They're out there as long as you don't care that you have to buy it as a bundle.

    • Nice! So you were actually able to source a standalone unit without the bundle? If you don’t me asking which store did you get it from? Thanks.
It was EB Games. They did require me to purchase a second controller or a game, which wasn't an issue since I was planning to buy 2 controllers anyways.

I'm outside of the GTA so probably not relevant. You have to call all the stores because some have a waiting list and others are first-come-first-serve with no holding.

    • Took a few weeks of calling all the local stores every day asking if they received any. Wasn't too bad but I WFH so it was easy for me to spend a few minutes a day hunting haha.

    • People are still scalping these things?

I bought 2 from scalpers the month they came out and the 3rd I got thru retail. It's been almost 2 years. Are they still that hard to get? I don't think I've seen a ps5 marketplace ad in forever but then again I haven't been looking.
Yes, retailers and Sony are smart, they are selling bundles in the store, which is actually costing an increase to the price of around 70-100$ for the console. As a consumer, most of us don't want or need a bundle, we just want the plain disc version or digital versions, and those are extremely hard to get. The extra useless 70-100$ for the console just isn't worth it, especially if its a game you don't even need or like. They should have just focused on selling standalone systems.

    • I’m in the same boat - no need for bundles. So far no luck finding a standalone console but I know of others that have lucked out.

    • I've been trying for a couple years to get the disc only version , but all Retails are selling are bundles which I don't need.
I don't trust buying from scalpers and prefer retail with warranty.

    • It will go up then start going on sale for holiday season (at least likely assuming there is stock/no more shortage). More so given the Pro is suppose to come out in a year. Honestly still waiting for some better exclusive titles released on PS5. Been gaming more on PC/switch than PS5/X mostly due to PC better performance and switch portability/exclusive titles (first party titles).
Except, there’s absolutely no indication a “Pro” version is coming out anytime soon. Nor should there be.

If supply chain and manufacturing meant Sony has been struggling to fill orders for 2 years since launch because they sell out within minutes (now within hours at least), there’s zero logi. to have a hardware change. Plus the PSVR2 is demoing in the coming week or so in Japan, set to release early 2023. Why would they change production lines on a product they sell out instantly.

I agree on your comment though of better library on Switch combined with portability right now. It’s definitely the best console for current library (imho). Though Switch releases are dwindling, with “Breath of the Wild 2” the last major expedited release coming out next year and tech is showing it’s age when you see cross-platform releases often struggle on it. But PS5? Literally still running off PS4 hits until they can sunset that console. Companies keep making games for both (limiting what PS5 can actually do) because why limit your market if you’re a developer right now. I think 2023 is when PS5 do all comes out of it’s shell..

Much better change of a Switch Pro announcement in unison with the Super Mario movie coming out in December than anything PS5 for a few years.

    • This stinks that us Canadians have to pick up the slack again because of the people down south who can't afford a price increase on their PS5s.
Their market outnumbers us by hundreds of millions so greater purchasing power, their dollar is stronger, and it's a market Sony has to do well in because the Xbox automatically does well in its home country.
Which company in their right mind would want to piss off as huge a market as the US in order to subsidize the rest of the world? Be happy, if they get sick while playing their PS5, they gotta go and pay to get better 😛 Plus we have better beer.

Maybe it *is* time to stop supporting this company.
I was done with consoles after ps4. Not going to buy another console unless there is something truly revolutionary comes along.

    • Based on the title I thought it was going to be a large increase. It's just over 3% for the disc version that's less than half the inflation rate.

    • Has anyone in Canada actually been able to buy a standalone PS5 console? I’ve been on a hunt for one and don’t want any extra controllers or some other junk.
I was able to at release but noticed most recent restock seem to bundle with an extra controller (at least at all major retailers). That said, I’ve noticed BST ads with lower markups, which should suggest there should be more regular stocks soon.

    • This just seems like they are increasing price so they can run "sales" with minimal impact to their $ sales numbers.

    • Maybe they can make one to run on solar or wind power or maybe even a hamster wheel as you won't be able to afford the electricity.

    • There's literally zero justification for having the price increase everywhere but the US.

In fact the CAD is actually trading at a slightly better rate compared to the USD than it was when the PS5 *launched*.
      That's too bad

    • Yea right. Those who play or want consoles will get it regardless. It's the best console out right now. I'm still looking to get one in stores, and the 20$ price increase is nothing
