Netflix is Launching a Cheaper Ad-Supported Streaming Plan in Canada
By Simon Hung
October 14, 2022Netflix is officially adding a new low-cost subscription plan to their service this fall, as the company has unveiled pricing for their long-rumoured ad-supported streaming plan.
Scheduled to launch on November 1 at 12:00 PM ET (9:00 AM PT), Netflix's new Basic with Ads plan will cost $5.99 per month in Canada, making it the cheapest streaming service on a monthly basis among the big five (Apple TV+, Crave, Disney+, Netflix and Prime Video).
However, the lower cost does come with several caveats. Most notably (as the name suggests), Basic with Ads will include ads – non-skippable 15 to 30-second ads will automatically play before and during most Netflix movies and shows. At launch, ads will not be shown on kids content or new movies and Netflix claims that there will be up to five minutes of ads for every hour of streaming.
Video quality is another drawback, as the Basic with Ads plan is locked to a maximum streaming resolution of 720p and only supports streaming on a single device. In addition, some content will not be available with the plan due to licensing restrictions (Netflix has not disclosed which titles) and mobile downloads are disabled.
Netflix's existing Basic, Standard and Premium streaming plans will remain ad-free and will still be available at their current rates – $9.99, $16.49 and $20.99 per month, respectively – after the November 1 launch.
Basic with Ads will be available in 12 countries worldwide and this marks the first time Netflix has introduced an ad-supported streaming plan in Canada and the United States, despite reportedly having zero interest in the concept back in 2020. Netflix likely reneged their stance soon after that report, as the company has faced stiffer competition in the streaming industry, which has resulted in sustained subscriber losses during every quarter dating back to 2021.

View allNetflix’s ad-supported tier is set to receive an unexpected, but very welcome, upgrade as the streamer has confirmed that users on its most affordable tier will very soon be able to download TV shows and movies for offline viewing.
Netflix revealed that the ability to download content will come to its ad-supported plan “by the end of the week" via an official blog post. Previously this highly useful feature was only available to subscribers on the more expensive ad-free tiers, but very shortly that will change. TechRadar, has also confirmed with Netflix that this upgrade will be rolled out in all 12 regions where the "Standard with adverts" plan is available including the U.S. and U.K. In even more surprising news, the same Netflix spokesperson confirmed that downloaded TV shows and movies won’t include advertisements either.

New movies coming to the service — notably marquee originals like Knives Out 2 — “will just have a pre-roll” of spots before the feature plays without interruption, Peters said. “We’ll try to preserve that sort of cinematic model there,” consistent how most rivals handle it, he said.
-- only newer Chromecast with Google TV works; the older "pure streaming" Chromecast does not work
-- Apple TV not supported (?!!)
-- iOS must be version 15 or newer
-- PS3 Netflix app not supported

That being said, my statement wasn't work, I did say most of them, Netflix is the only one that earns a profit on streaming.

When I 1st signed up the Standard plan was good value. Now after a couple price increases, meh, not so much. Especially with less Content (IMO) that I'm interested in.
Cmon Netflix!

Especially when Netflix lost the Marvel/Star Wars licensing/copyright to Disney+.
On the verge of cancelling my Netflix $16.49 + Ontario tax Standard plan.
Netflix made 5 billion dollars last year dude lol
but hard to argue with free.. lol.
On Cable the newest irritating way to get you to watch the ads is on global. When I record a certain show I watch and I don't watch it for 3 days, they convert it to "Not able to skip ads" and there are about 6 slots in 1 hour with ads running for about 60 seconds and more. Anyone have any good resolve for this?
It’ a good thing they offer cheaper ad based tiers though for those who don’t mind ads or can’t afford more expensive tiers.
We sometimes sub to StackTV and it drives me crazy when they have a single commercial break. Takes me right out of watch I'm watching.
I suppose there's options. I'll just keep doing what I'm doing.
I suppose the way to look at it though is this is a way for people to get a legitimate Netflix account for $6 a month versus not having it at all or streaming the content elsewhere illegally.
With Cable TV, I have the Rogers Nextbox 3.0.
I can record a show, watch it later and fast forward through the ads.
Heh...looks like Netflix and the ad companies both got smart.
You're set up so you have to watch the ads.
(& here I thought product placement was going to be the future, )
They don't want to scare people away with too many ads, but OTOH, maybe they want to be just annoying enough to encourage paying full price for the ad free option.
