NCIX Closes Three Stores in Ontario

NCIX Closes Three Stores in Ontario

By Simon Hung

NCIX is leaving the Ontario market, as the BC-based retailer has decided to close three of their four retail stores in Ontario.

In a post to the NCIX forums from July 17, a staff representative stated that retail stores in Ottawa, Mississauga and Toronto would be closed immediately, while their showroom in Markham will remain open -- the Markham showroom also houses their Ontario head office and warehouse. Customers can continue to shop online at NCIX.com and stores in British Columbia are unaffected.

The now-closed NCIX store located on Yonge Street in Toronto.

The closures mark the end of NCIX’s eastern expansion that began in 2010 when they opened their first Ontario stores in Markham and Scarborough, then Mississauga, Ottawa and Toronto later on. The Scarborough store closed in 2015 and no specific reason was given regarding the recent closures, but online shopping and low foot traffic are likely contributing factors.

The shift to online shopping likely played a significant role, as it’s simply easier to shop for computer components from various online stores instead of visiting a physical store, especially with the growing popularity of comparison shopping tools like PCPartPicker and forums like RedFlagDeals.

In addition, all Ontario stores were never in ideal locations, as four of five were situated in suburban areas while the Toronto location was located in Midtown, making NCIX an unfavourable option for many Toronto residents versus competitors with stores in the downtown core.

It’s unknown if the company will attempt to re-enter the Ontario market in the future, but given the large population and their existing logistical infrastructure, it likely isn’t out of the question. Any customers with pending pick-up orders at the closed stores will be contacted by NCIX staff or can call 1-888-624-9888 for inquiries.

No... You're about a year and a half late on this one.

    • Don't have the same credit card number and code I did when I was still shopping at NCIX so I figure I'm safe on this one. However, not so much with the BMO or Equifax leaks.

    • hmmm, I think the only card number they may have that could possibly be my vancity cc. I dropped my wallet at work and I had my cards cancelled and reissued just in case. I got my wallet back in the end. I never actually used my cards at ncix after I lost my cards. Not too sure about my vancity cc.

I don't think I've ever paid for an NCIX purchase online though I may have paid in a card in-store. With that said, my addresses and such I left with NCIX were my old workplace.

    • What I'd like to know is why/how is their website still up and running after months of being bankrupt and no longer existing as a business? I speculated earlier that perhaps they paid for the website to be running in advance for a year (or more) or something...but does this mean we'll be seeing NCIX.com up in 2019 with all the same stuff on the site? It's not a huge deal since you can't make any orders from the non-existent company but it's kind of funny when people that don't know they're out of business post about them on other threads thinking since the site is up they're still running.

+1, my co-worker was recently complaining about how NCIX still had not shipped some PC case he ordered a while back. I had to inform him of the bankruptcy.

    • On a side note, the NCIX website is STILL active and running at this very moment! 😂 Going to be a headache for unsuspecting people ordering off the website. For fun, I added the $800 PC case on the front page to my cart, says that my estimated ship date is April 29, 2018. Quite optimistic.
I don't get this either. How do they have the $$$ to keep the site going if they're bankrupt? Perhaps it was pre-paid for xx months (or years gasp!) and will keep going until then because of that?

I don't think you can actually make orders though right (like go through payment processing)?

Yeah right, "it was said". I'm sure that's what happened  You think YouTube doesn't have some kind of replacement program for these things in case people lost them due to legitimate reasons? Even if there was a cost, it probably would be a lot simpler than finding some random computer-store-closing-down auction to get one and then going to the trouble of defacing it and having it re-done to pretend it was yours. The reality is he never got one, plain and simple.
He said he was going to rebadge it so remove the ncix and all that.
Of course that's what he's gonna do, but that doesn't mean he won the award. If I go buy some sports star's MVP award because they went bankrupt and had to auction off everything, then got the named changed on it, you think I should then do that and pretend like I'm MLB MVP of 2012 or something when I've barely ever played baseball? It's scummy behaviour at best, fraud otherwise.

    • But realistically...how would they make you pay? They'd have to take you to court no less, and the hassle and cost of them doing that is probably not worth the effort of just re-auctioning it or selling it to the next bidder in line instead. Perhaps they had a person's CC information to charge against but what if you gave them a fake CC or one that was maxed out and wouldn't approve the charge anyway? Not much they could do there.

Exactly--and same thing everyone commenting on the video on YouTube has pointed out. Basically YouTube wasn't going to award this clown anything because he clearly doesn't deserve it (YouTube only gives these awards on actual merit not just raw numbers) so he just decided to find himself one and re-badge it or whatever so it looked like his  These kind of losers are the people that boast about accomplishments they never really had, as if they have them. You can tell it comes from upbringing too as the guys pops basically thinks Linus is a nobody and says, "nope, we're not selling it my son has a channel with xxx subs!" The first thing I thought when he said that was, "wait then shouldn't he have his own already then?" But then I realised what I said above--YT doesn't just issue these on raw views they actually look at it subjectively to determine if there's actual content there.

As I said it's one thing if you bought it as a fan of NCIX Tech Tips (Linus or otherwise) or if you wanted it as memorabilia of a computer store that "once was" or whatever. But that wasn't the intent here at all. It was merely buying something you didn't achieve to say you achieved it. What a sniveling loser.

I think it's mentioned somewhere, or Linus mentioned it in the other guy's vid (the random other guy that went looking for camera and lighting equipment--basically the only other guy with videos of the auction if you search on YT). It wasn't that much actually and was probably the steal of the auction given it also included that TV lol. I mean not like the TV is worth that much but had it saw prices like the computer parts it would have sold, on its own, for like $2000 lol.

What he could of done is send linus the 'black paper' at least and then he could rebadge another silver button.

If you look at that guy's channel, you'll realize it's basically a bunch of clickbait videos. While the 1.2m subs is impressive at first glance, it becomes kind of suspicious when you see that his latest videos don't even crack 25k views and his last upload was 3 months ago. Basically either those are sub bots or the channel is failing at retaining viewership. He said youtube never gave him a plaque. I guess it makes sense when the channel is pulling nowhere near the numbers the sub count suggests.

We don't know how much he paid for the lot. Perhaps Linus backed out when he realized how much it would cost him. Besides, Linus had no one but himself to blame for missing the bid.

    • LOL @ 5:58 "this is too stupid for me"
pretty much sums up the auction.
Yeah that was the best part of the video. It's really crazy what ppl were doing there, I wonder if ppl just bid things up, made a getaway and never picked it up or paid? Because those prices were so out there it's not funny.

I also don't get why someone would want a YouTube plaque that actually has nothing to do with them? Isn't that like having a Gold Record you weren't the artists/part of the band for? Like having someone's Oscar when you weren't the person named on it? I mean okay I get it if you're a fan, particularly if the artist has passed away or something, but what else are you going to do with these things if they weren't awarded to you/your work/something you were a part of? The stranger thing is the guy did not even know who Linus was, which was pretty mind-boggling. Like okay he bought the entire lot so he could have the YouTube thing...for NCIX Tech Tips. Okay maybe he was a big fan, so it might make sense. Yet he didn't even know a thing about it??? Just strikes me as incredibly odd. Then Linus doesn't buy it off him and even suggests to him to change the name on it or whatever--again, what's the point in that? To fake an achievement/accomplishment/award that you never got yourself? Messed. Right. Up.
I wanna see the reaction on the person who spent $2500 on a bunch of GPU coolers.
The odd thing is I wonder if they really care. Like the guy buying the keyboards for insane prices. Linus goes up to him and he just seems to be off in his own "zone" bidding away on things like some kind of spaced out weirdo, lol. Not even a care in the world what he's buying or what it's worth, just like "uh here's something to bid on might as well keep going until I win!" The strange explanation of "it's here now" is proof that some of these people probably have some kind of problem similar to a gambling problem but with auctions.

Bingo! We have a winner! That's why I never go to auctions any more, so many people don't do their homework on prices and get carried away by the thrill of bidding that they ridiculously overbid. They don't even take into account that there's an auction fee surcharge and GST/PST on top of the final price which still has to be paid.
