McDonald's is Ditching Paper McCafé Rewards Stickers
By Simon Hung
July 6, 2022One of Canada's favourite fast food loyalty programs is ending this summer, as McDonald's will be discontinuing their McCafé Rewards sticker program this August.
Starting in August, physical McCafé Rewards stickers will no longer be available on McDonald's beverage cups and the chain will transition coffee rewards to their digital MyMcDonald's Rewards program, which was launched in Canada last November.
McCafé stickers were extremely popular among Canadian coffee fans, as the program rewarded customers with a free cup of coffee or tea after collecting seven stickers. On RedFlagDeals, the program was especially popular during McDonald's $1.00 coffee promotions, as customers were able to accumulate a significant amount of stickers at a low cost.
McDonald's Canada will still accept any completed cards until December 31, 2023, which means those with a stockpile of sticker cards can still redeem them for free coffee throughout 2022-23.
The transition away from physical stickers was highly speculated ever since MyMcDonald's Rewards was launched in late-2021, but it wasn't officially acknowledged by the company until early-2022. There is no way to transfer McCafé Rewards stickers to MyMcDonald's Rewards – you must redeem any completed cards by December 31, 2023, while incomplete cards will become expired in August 2022.
Under MyMcDonald's Rewards, you can get any size coffee for free by redeeming 2000 points, which requires spending a minimum of $20.00, based on the standard earning rate of 100 points per $1.00 spent. For comparison, a McCafé Rewards sticker card could be completed by spending as little as $7.00 during one of McDonald's $1.00 coffee events.

View allI got some pushback this morning when trying to redeem a couple of completed cards. Felt bad for the team lead on duty (she is just following what the supervisor told her) but I had to prove that the "poster" overrides the supervisor.
Anyway, I had a card missing a couple of stickers and I was able to redeem it for a coffee this morning. So don't throw out your incomplete card as you may still be able to get a coffee out of it.
Also, may depend on size of coffee. Maybe they will run out of medium cup with stickers but have them for XL.

Updated On-Cup McCafé® Rewards Program – Terms & Conditions says transition to hot beverage cups without McCafé® Rewards stickers and cards starts in August.
"Starting in August 2022, McDonald’s restaurants in Canada* will begin to transition to hot beverage cups without McCafé® Rewards stickers and cards. Once the transition is complete, the on-cup McCafé Rewards stickers and cards will no longer be available."
I redeemed one of my rewards cards this morning at the location on Highway 7 & Valleymede in southern Richmond Hill, Ontario.................the coffee cup that I got did not have a sticker on it...........the stickers were supposed to be available until August but maybe they ran out of cups with stickers so they have already started to use cups with no stickers..............I wonder if some locations are still handing out cups with stickers and others are not, based on availability
L flavored coffee is the next best option
What's the best deal? Still the soft cone??
I always thought I did a good job at recycling but after going through their posts, I realized I had been throwing away a lot of stuff that could have been recycled.
As recycling requirements can be local or regional
Where I am … food stained / used cardboard … or waxed cardboard goes in the green bin
Unstained cardboard … goes in the black bin (papers) … as long as it’s uncoated in any way (no wax, no stickers, no plastic laminate )
If it’s “contaminated” by a coating … then it’s trash
Those are sort of the gold standard rules for recycling (stained vs unstained … and coated vs uncoated)
The biggest offenders are cups that have been plastic laminate coated … or places still using styrofoam
Cuz there’s no industry standard coffee cup …
Some municipalities / regions … just plain out don’t accept ANY COFFEE CUPS
That’s a lot of single serve coffee cups that end up in the trash !!!
CBC Marketplace did a bit of a story on this … of course it was Toronto-centric … so their findings THERE don’t necessarily what’s going on in the rest of Canada … which means misinformed people … send even more cups to the trash / landfill
Grrrr on CBC Marketplace
My pet peeve with them … just doing stories from a GTA POV
Which is why we personally have tended to just go to places that still are using sturdy cardboard untreated … or waxed cardboard cups … lol and have been known to bring them home to dispose of them … vs just toss them in the trash when we are out
Figure every little bit helps
* Also uncoated or wax coated coffee cups can easily be repurposed for gardening … a great bigger pot to transfer seedlings to that we’re originally started in peat pellets … as they will break down fairly well in the garden once planted (score the cardboard cup when placing in the ground).
If you use the app, you get points in addition to the sticker. A $1.50 coffee nets 150 points and 1 sticker, which is ~20% of a free coffee. Just using stickers means each coffee gives you 1/7 of a coffee back (~14%).
Starting in August 2022, McDonald’s restaurants in Canada* will begin to transition to hot beverage cups without McCafé® Rewards stickers and cards. Once the transition is complete, the on-cup McCafé Rewards stickers and cards will no longer be available.
Completed McCafé Rewards cards can be redeemed at participating McDonald’s restaurants in Canada until December 31, 2023. McCafé Rewards cards and Rewards stickers cannot be transferred to the McDonald’s app, and have no cash value.
*Note that in the Province of Manitoba, and in Dryden, Kenora and Fort Frances, Ontario, the on-cup McCafé Rewards program ended as of October 5, 2021. Completed McCafé Rewards cards can be redeemed at participating McDonald’s restaurants in Canada, including these areas, until December 31, 2023. McCafé Rewards cards and Rewards stickers cannot be transferred to the McDonald’s app, and have no cash value.
I found the following on the McD's website today (bottom of the page), with the 2nd photo towards the bottom of the page when you select "Learn More" from the 1st photo.
It looks like it will be nationwide:
I don't drink much coffee, have a bunch of Free Coffees on my App I haven't used yet.
This used to also be replicated on the app, so you could technically get double rewards: one sticker on the physical cup and a second one in the app.
I've only used the App, before that I used their Coupons for food and drink. People were scanning some sort of discount card?
They don't know about all this 'app' crap.
Completed McCafe Rewards Cards need to be redeemed by December 31, 2023.
I saw the attached photo on the tables at McDonald's.
When the new rewards program was starting, I realized those were probably on the way out. Prior to that, I had noticed the bumped the expiry date to the end of Feb this year, and that's when I realized I actually needed to spend them or I'd lose them all. Don't think I paid for a coffee from Nov-Feb
Honestly, I prefer the app. At least 60% of the time the cashier just doesn't get it when I say "3 milk, 2 splenda". With every possible misinterpretation I've encountered, I suspect at least some of the time they might be deliberately messing with me. I am more than happy to remove the human element from this transaction.

There was signage in the stores saying cards & stickers were coming to an end
I cannot remember the date on the signage I saw
But … There’s a thread on RFD about it where it clearly says in the release :
mcdonalds-bringing-mymcdonalds-rewards- ... 2-2484563/
So really wasn’t so much of a Test Trial … as it was right from the get go planned for McDs to roll it out Nationwide … region by region.
Much like they did in the US
Don’t know what’s the plan for BC as far as timing
But I imagine you’ll see it soon too
