McDonald's Canada is Launching a New Augmented Reality Experience this Halloween

By Thomas Kenzaki

Halloween as we’ve come to know it will look a lot different this year. Due to the current coronavirus pandemic, trick or treating and other Halloween celebrations might not be happening. To help create some Halloween fun that might otherwise be missing this year, McDonald’s is launching a new augmented reality (AR) experience which runs from October 29-31.

If you’re like me and have basically cancelled all your Halloween plans, you can enjoy this new interactive Halloween web-based augmented reality (AR) experience from your own home. It’s geared towards the whole family so both kids and adults can participate.

The new experience will be available starting on October 29th, and all you’ll need to participate is a smartphone.

Here’s a description from McDonald’s on what the experience will be like:

  • The iconic yellow McDelivery door will appear on-screen upon entry (a.k.a. upon entering the website)
  • Like trick-or-treating, “knock” on the door to enter the experience – the rest is for you to explore
  • Parents will receive an exclusive offer “inside” this AR (from your friends at McDonald’s!) to enjoy this Halloween
  • Users will also get the chance to take a spooky interactive photo and save it as a memory on their smartphones!

Nothing can truly replace the experience of going door-to-door trick or treating, but this should be a fun activity for the kids. On the plus side, you won’t get caught in the cold and/or rain!

While no details of the “exclusive offer” have been revealed yet, our money is on it being a McDelivery offer of some form.

Stay tuned to the McDonald’s Canada website and social media channels for more details on the special 3-day Halloween experience.
