Limited Edition Throwback Happy Meal Toys Are Coming to McDonald's Canada on November 7th!

By Thomas Kenzaki

It’s hard to believe but the iconic Happy Meal is celebrating its 40th anniversary this month. For four decades kids (and adults too) have enjoyed receiving a fun toy along with their Happy Meal. To celebrate the big 4-0, McDonald’s Canada is launching a Surprise Happy Meal which includes 15 retro toys (10 in Quebec) from Happy Meals past.

From November 7th to November 10th, you’ll receive one of these surprise toys with each Happy Meal. Unlike regular Happy Meal promotions, you will NOT be able to purchase these toys separately.

Here’s a full list of the toys you’ll find available during this special promotion along with the year they were originally released:

  • Cowboy McNugget* (McDonald's): 1988
  • Fireman McNugget* (McDonald's): 1988
  • Mail Carrier McNugget* (McDonald's): 1988
  • Hamburger Changeable (McDonald's): 1989
  • Grimace (McDonald's): 1990
  • Dino Happy Meal Box Changeable* (McDonald's): 1991
  • McDonald's Hot Wheels Thunderbird* (Mattel): 1993
  • Hamburglar (McDonald's): 1995
  • Power Rangers (Hasbro): 1995
  • Space Jam Bugs Bunny (Warner Brothers): 1996
  • Patti the Platypus (Ty Beanie Baby): 1997
  • Tamagotchi (Bandai): 1998
  • My Little Pony (Hasbro): 1998
  • Furby (Hasbro): 1999
  • Hello Kitty (Sanrio): 2013

*Excluding Quebec

As a self proclaimed McDonald’s Superfan (I mean how many other people have a dresser drawer just for their McDonald’s apparel?), I haven’t been this excited about a Happy Meal toy set since the Halloween Chicken McNugget toys way back when.

Collecting them all won’t be easy with the larger than normal amount of toys, not being able to purchase them separately, and the very short release window (a 4-day release window versus the usual 30-day average). You may need to do some trading with friends, or head to eBay or Kijiji to complete your set this time around.

Personally I’m most excited about the Changeable’s and McNugget toys, but all the toys are amazing in this limited release.

Will you be heading out to McDonald’s to scoop up some of the nostalgic toys? Let us know in the comments below what your favourites are!

    • I am disappointed at McD on 2269 Riverside Dr, Ottawa. I went for lunch today for this very reason. They gave me a Hasbro gaming (just in case you don't know, these were from Oct 2018). I asked about the special toy, and I was told (not in a very nice tone) that was the only toy they have. What! You don't even have Peanuts NASA (the current toy)! I want my 40th Anniversary you. 😫

Wow, the Hasbro gaming series is really old! Do they normally have the most up to date sets at that location? Try reaching out to McDonald's on social media. They're usually quite helpful there.

I know! How could they still have such an old (a year old) Happy Meal toy!

Judging by the mentions on McDonalds' twitter, not many people are actually finding the retro toys in store. https://twitter.com/McDonaldsCanada/with_replies
I did reach out the social media, pretty much the same response as the Twitter ones.

    • I was able to get the retro toy without even asking. I went to another location and asked them about the retro toy and they said they no longer have the snoopy toys

    • Only available for 4 days?!? Need to make my way to a McDoanlds to check this one.

For those of you who actually got one, did the staff actually decline you to buying one/some without a happy meal purchase?

    • Curious if anyone got the whole set?

If yes, where are you located and what was the buying experience like? Did any of your locations sell you the tits straight up with the happy meal purchase, or perhaps even help find you the set all at once?

Per McD’s Twitter, there seemingly are quite a few reports of “sold out” locations? Surely big city locations for more allocation than small town?
