During the winter, you might not feel as motivated to go to the gym. Having to bundle up to head into the cold weather, and then sweating at the gym before heading back into the cold doesn’t sound like a lot of fun, right? It’s enough to make you want to slip under the blanket on your couch and avoid leaving the house.

The good news is you can skip the gym and get in a great workout right at home. With the right gear and exercise routine, you can keep your body slim and toned through the winter so you’ll be ready when summer returns.

Take Time to Strength Train

Strength training provides a variety of benefits, and it’s an effective way to keep your body in shape through the winter months. By performing workouts that boost the power of the muscles in your upper body, lower body, and core, you can lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. Plus, when you strength train, you’ll be taking steps towards maintaining the health of your joints and bones as well.

Bodyweight exercises are those that utilize your own weight as resistance. Examples include push-ups, mountain climbers, planks, burpees, squats, lunges, and triceps dips. Even yoga poses can help you build strength without having to use any weights. When you want to increase the intensity, investing in the right gear can help you take your at-home winter fitness routine to the next level. Here are a couple suggestions to help you get started:

  • Adjustable kettlebells allow you to save space because one kettlebell can be set to varying weights. Use these to get your heart rate up, work your core, and strengthen the muscles in your legs and arms. Simply adjust how heavy your kettlebell is to match your current fitness level, and then increase the weight you’re lifting as you get stronger.
  • Adjustable dumbbells also give you the chance to build up your muscles at home without having to buy separate sets of weights. One handy set of dumbbells will let you adjust the weight to whatever level you’re currently at. Use these to perform a range of movements that target the muscles of your chest, back, shoulders, and arms.

Tip: When you’re ready to go beyond kettlebells, dumbbells, and bodyweight exercises, there are home gyms to suit every budget and fit any space.

Incorporate HIIT into Your Routine

HIIT stands for high-intensity interval training. It’s a great way to burn fat when working out at home so you can prevent unwanted winter weight gain.

Basically, these exercises have you alternating between high-intensity intervals that get your heart pumping strong and low-intensity intervals that give you the chance to recover before diving right back into another high-intensity movement, and so on.

You don’t need any equipment, and you don’t need a lot of time, to make the most of this style of exercise. But if you wanted to add in some equipment to up the intensity, you could use dumbbells, kettlebells, or even a jump rope, as a few examples.

Don’t Forget the Cardio

You might want to focus all of your attention on building sexy muscles, but don’t forget about the importance of adding cardio to your workout schedule. In the winter, this might be a bit of a challenge at first if you like to run outside, go swimming in your pool, or go hiking to get your heart rate up and your muscles working. But rest assured that there are plenty of ways to build your endurance in the comfort of home.

  • If you have the space for a treadmill, elliptical, or exercise bike, you may want to invest in one. Doing so might help you save money by not needing the gym, and it also gives you the freedom to do cardio whenever you want. There are products to suit every budget, as well as space-saving options for those who live in apartments or smaller homes.
  • Online streaming services give you access to a diverse array of workouts that are ideal for getting your heart pumping. For example, kickboxing and dance workouts can be a lot of fun, and they help you build strength while getting your body moving and sweating.

Tip: Want it all? Consider purchasing one of the exercise bikes or treadmills that come with the option to subscribe to a streaming service. That way, you can try different cardio workout sessions and keep things interesting. Great examples include the NordicTrack Commercial S22i Studio Cycle and Peloton Exercise Bike.

Keep Your Body in Tip-Top Shape Through the Winter

Whether you choose to exercise without any equipment at all or you want to invest in a high-end product that will help you burn calories and fat while building muscle, there are many ways to stay active throughout the winter, without even leaving the house. So resist the temptation to skip your workouts, and keep your body strong and flexible with the right exercise routine.

    • Now if we could only get some way of people to actually use this equipment after purchase. That's an option they haven't quite mastered yet.
