Fitbit Recalls 1.7 Million Ionic Smartwatches, Including 70,000 Units in Canada

By Simon Hung

Fitbit has issued a voluntary recall of over 1.7 million Ionic smartwatches worldwide, following incident reports where the battery can overheat and pose a burn hazard for users.

Originally released in 2017, the Fitbit Ionic is the company's third-generation smartwatch and features a 1.4" display. The Ionic was discontinued in 2020 and all versions of the smartwatch have been recalled, including four models sold in Canada between 2017 and 2020:

  • Fitbit Ionic, Blue-Grey/White (Model #: FB503WTGY-CAN)
  • Fitbit Ionic, Charcoal/Smoke Grey (Model #: FB503GYBK-CAN)
  • Fitbit Ionic, Slate Blue/Burned Orange (Model #: FB503CPBU-CANFB503CPBU-CAN)
  • Fitbit Ionic Adidas Edition, Ink Blue/Silver (Model #: FB503WTNV)

Fitbit is urging all Ionic owners – both active and inactive – to stop using the device immediately out of an abundance of caution. As part of the recall, Fitbit is offering a $299.00 USD no-questions-asked refund to Ionic owners, along with a limited-time discount code for the Fitbit Store. Only Fitbit Ionic smartwatches are eligible for the refund and all other Fitbit models are not affected by the battery issue.

In Canada, simply visit the Fitbit Ionic Recall page and fill out the registration form to submit a refund claim.

According to Health Canada, 70,561 Fitbit Ionic smartwatches were sold in Canada between August 2017 and August 2020, along with over one million in the United States and 630,000 units internationally. As of February 15, there have been zero reports of battery overheating incidents in Canada, but 115 reports have been recorded in the United States by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.

    • Thanks, beat me to the post! Just did the same myself - it's really too bad because I actually love the Ionic and does everything I need it to do with an amazing battery life. I guess I'll be moving on to the Sense from here when they send the refund.

    • Is the refund in terms of etransfer or interact... Or just store credit? Might be worth picking up a couple of used ones if it's the former...

    • For anyone wondering, there were 78 burn reports of uses wearing the device.

They are recalling over 1 million devices, which means they estimate the lawsuit at over $300 million if they didn’t recall.

You have a choice of Amazon Gift Card, Walmart Gift Card or a 3rd option that I forgot...

You also get a link to access a discount on some new Fitbit products.

I'd laugh if someone got burned buying a used one that was claimed already.

    • Hey all, not a traditional Hot Deal, so please move if it doesn't fit!

A friendly FYI that there is a voluntary recall for the fitbit ionic that came out today.

They are offering a $300 refund, no questions asked.

Just make sure the Fitbit Ionic is added to your fitbit account as they will need to see it there and disable it to give you the refund!

If you have one laying around or maybe one that you are using, might be a good time to upgrade it!

      I completed the process myself.

Took about 20 minutes (most of which was waiting for their systems to sync up halfway through the process).

Refund will be sent in 3-6 weeks.
$300 USD refund btw, so it would be more in CAD

hahaha yes of course, as long as that fitbit has not already been recalled. I am not sure of any way to check to see if it has been or not so it is risky.

    • I had an ionic for 2-3 years, it was great while I had it. I've moved on from fitbit and kept my watch incase of a smart watch upgrade. Glad I didn't send it in yet!
Do you need to send the physical watch in or will they deactivate on their end?

Probably not the best use of the word "burned" here lol

3rd option is Paypal. It was hard to tell if we'd be getting $300USD or CAD, but it's awesome if it's USD! Also you can pick up a new fitbit (3 models) at 40% off, although it looks like they're on sale now for same price, but you get some extra bands and a year's worth of the Fitbit premium too if you buy directly from Fitbit. Also you can get up to 5 devices at the discount price.

      Received my email earlier today.
Really like my my Ionic mainly because it doesn't look like an Apple Watch which the other Fitbit smartwatches do.
Would really like to be able to "dispose" of it myself if refund allows.
Still waiting for someone to be able to confirm that.
I also wonder what they can do to your account if you still use the watch after getting the refund.

Amazon has the Fitbit Sense for $258.98 right now.
Fitbit website is selling the same for $259.95, regular $399.95.

I was getting the same on my desktop, then I tried my phone and the Register button worked after a few seconds with the cogs spinning.

Anyone have luck with the 40% discount?

I got a separate email with the code to get into the store but I didn't follow through yet. I'm trying to see if the price shown in the store is before or after the 40% sale. For now, the price shown is about the same as Amazon for the Sense.

Me too - but the link to the store in their email is broken. Promo code doesn't work in their "regular" online store, so maybe just wait for them to fix the link....

Only the 1st one was new but got water damaged when swimming a few times with it, the 3 others were bought used, but since they are all currently registered in my Fitbit account, they cannot proceed my request, I will have to call in.
