Canadian Tire Corp. Ltd. is Closing All National Sports Stores

By Ambia Staley

Canadian Tire Corp. Ltd. announced that it plans to shutter all National Sports locations -- a move which some may find surprising considering the company recently reported that its fourth-quarter revenue and profit have risen significantly when compared to a year prior.

The company decided to close the stores following an internal evaluation in an aim to reduce overlap in their sporting goods assortment with other company brands including Canadian Tire and SportChek.

Gregory Craig, the retailer's chief financial officer, said in a call on February 18, "This has been a difficult decision, particularly due to its impact on people." He also added that, "[w]e're making every effort to place affected employees within our family of companies."

Canadian Tire Corp. Ltd. operates a number of brands, including Canadian Tire, Mark's, SportChek, Atmosphere, Sports Experts and Pro Hockey Life.

National Sports -- launched as National Gym Clothing Ltd. in 1968 is known for their selection of sportwear, shoes, and gear.

    • Oooh, good news!!!

I can't wait until Canadian Tire announces that they are closing all of their stores! Not just their National Sports Stores!!!

I've hated Canadian Tire's crappy return policy for years. They never accept returns - EVER! Even with a receipt. Even with all the original packaging in the original state.

Their Mastercraft tools are supposed to carry a lifetime warranty. The name is stamped into each hand tool. Try getting warranty on a damaged or faulty'll never happen!!!

      Good effin' riddance!!

    • This store has felt like it was out of business for years. Like Zellers did.

    • The only place where you can buy a single Fox 40 whistle. I used to be able to get them at CT (single whistle) but now they are sold in pairs (in Boating).

Can we collect Triangle Rewards at the store? I knew CT had Atmosphere and Marks and Sports Chek but National Sports completely missed my radar.
