Best Buy Recalls Select Insignia Air Fryers in Canada

By Simon Hung

Best Buy has issued a voluntary recall of over 138,000 Insignia Air Fryers in Canada, following reports of the appliance overheating and creating a fire hazard for users.

Six Insignia Air Fryers are included in this recall, ranging in size from 3.4 to 10-quarts (3.9 to 11.4 litres) – all six models were sold between November 2018 and April 2022 directly at Best Buy Canada or through Best Buy's third-party marketplaces at Amazon.ca and eBay.

  • Insignia Analog Air Fryer, 3.4-Quart, Black – Model #: NS-AF32MBK9-C
  • Insignia Analog Air Fryer, 5-Quart, Stainless Steel – Model #: NS-AF53MSS0-C
  • Insignia Analog Air Fryer, 10-Quart, Black – Model #: NS-AF50MBK9-C
  • Insignia Digital Air Fryer Oven, 5.3-Quart, Stainless Steel – Model #: NS-AF50DBK0-C
  • Insignia Digital Air Fryer Oven, 10-Quart, Black – Model #: NS-AFO6DSS1-C
  • Insignia Digital Air Fryer, Family Size, Black – Model #: NS-AF55DBK9-C

Best Buy and Health Canada are urging all Insignia Air Fryer owners to check if their model is affected by the recall. If so, you should stop using the appliance immediately and return it for a gift card refund.

In Canada, simply visit the Insignia Air Fryer and Air Fryer Oven Recall Portal and fill out the registration form to submit a refund claim. Best Buy Canada will also be contacting known purchasers directly to arrange returns.

Once complete, you will be sent a shipping box and a pre-paid shipping label for your return. Afterwards, owners will be issued a Best Buy electronic gift card – the amount loaded onto the gift card will be the price originally paid on your receipt or $75.00 CAD (whichever is higher).

According to Health Canada, 138,570 units were sold in Canada and 36 incident reports have been documented by Health Canada, including one report of minor injury.

    • Lol. People refuse to wear a mask now even in crowded places.

I have been eyeing this substitute Air Fryer from Costco: https://www.costco.ca/gourmia-7-quart-d ... 84087.html
Costco is selling tons of them throughout the US in Canada. For the price, it's a good product, but the build-quality is so-so and same with the long-term durability (non-stick,etc.). It's a decent enough product and good value. However, as some other RFD user recently pointed out, so many times he'd see someone in a return-line with one. Funny enough, same here. I returned something a few days ago and, sure enough, there's a person in the line holding one of the units.

The numbers might seem low but for ever reported incident there are probably dozens others who had minor issues where it burnt and they quickly turned it off, etc, but didn't report it.
It's really not too surprising though and I'm sure there are other appliances with similar issues that don't have recalls, or that may do have recalls that we're not even aware of. It's a kitchen top appliance that has a significant amount of plastic and that heats up to a very high temperature. I'm sure there are many other air fryers that might be in a similar boat, just that no one reported it.

If you're set on keeping it, just make sure to never leave your food cooking unattended. It's something you should never do anyway. And ideally use a quality power bar so you always have an easy way to shut off the power without having to run to your circuit breaker room.

In-store credit for a recall? A family member bought one a week ago, they will surely want a full refund to buy another brand somewhere else, not an in-store credit.

    • I would prefer a full refund in form of a cheque.... What the F*? Store credit?

Good thing I bought it online, so was able to find receipt in email box.

Less than 0.014% of the air-fryers caught on fire. I think there are much higher risk activities/appliances people do and use daily (not enough exercise, smoking, unhealthy eating habits, etc). So I think you will be just fine keep using it.

Thanks, I went to the Canada Recalls site and submitted my request for refund through the link. This is the online response

      Thank you for your registration!
Thank you again for taking the time to register your Insignia Air Fryer and ensuring that your information is in our system.

As a reminder, your confirmation number is: 30....................................... (bunch of digits)

Within the next 3-6 weeks, you will be shipped a return kit that you may use to return your recalled Insignia Air Fryer unit. Once your recalled unit is returned and processed, you will be sent an electronic Best Buy gift card within 3-6 weeks.

      It also says
Best Buy stores will not provide credits or refunds for recalled air fryers or air fryer ovens returned to stores.

PITA as I bought mine for more than $75 so will have to return the receipt as well - and what do I use for the next 6+ weeks while waiting for my gift card - they should ethically give us a cash refund to our credit cards not force us to buy something else from them. Their current air fryers of similar capacity are 3 times the price.

Thanks. You saved me the hassle. The Best Buy agent told me (over the phone) the store is aware of the recall and WILL take the appliance AND will issue me a store credit. I wanted to verify with the store, but all I have is the toll-free general number.

Thanks for this, I was wondering what was the catch and sure enough, it's the quality. At it's regular price it's larger and the same price I paid for the 5 quart Insignia version.

Like with covid, why take the unnecessary risk? I returned a programmable Noma thermostat to Canadian Tire after about 5+ years which was subject to a recall. The fire risk was small, but it was still part of the recall. They were ok with either an exchange with a comparable model or a refund.
And ideally use a quality power bar so you always have an easy way to shut off the power without having to run to your circuit breaker room.
I was told by an electrician never to use a power bar with these high wattage appliances as it only increases the risk of fire.

Ya... I shouldn't have said "ideally". Because "ideally" you should just return it. 😄
And yes, if you use a cheapy power bar from the dollar store, that does increase the risk of fire. But if you use a "quality" power bar that is properly rated for your air fryer, and you're not plugging multiple things in, it shouldn't increase the risk of fire. If it has proper built in overload trip, then if anything it will add a second layer of protection in case your circuit breaker doesn't trip it.
But really I mentioned it just so if something happens you can try and pull the cord or trip it from power bar instead of getting close to the air fryer to try and shut it off which in the worst case is up in flames.

3-6 weeks? I am moving in a months time so I guess I will have to wait until after I move to register. Such troublesome process. Why can't I just bring it over to Best Buy?
