How to Watch Friends: The Reunion in Canada

By Simon Hung

17 years after Chandler, Joey, Monica, Phoebe, Rachel and Ross made their final appearances on TV, the Friends gang is getting back together, as Friends: The Reunion is scheduled to premiere on Thursday, May 27.

Also known as "The One Where They Get Back Together," rumours of a Friends reunion first surfaced in late-2019 from The Hollywood Reporter, with all six stars reportedly in talks to return for a one-time special. WarnerMedia later confirmed the details and set a tentative premiere date of May 2020 to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the series and the launch of HBO Max, but was forced to postpone the premiere until 2021 due to production delays as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Friends: The Reunion is not an additional scripted episode of the hit 90s sitcom. Instead, the reunion special will be a fireside chat-style celebration where Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer return to the original Friends soundstage to reminisce about the series and share stories with fans and guests.

Part of the special will be hosted by James Corden, while several former cast members and celebrity fans are slated to make appearances including Elliott Gould (Jack Geller), James Michael Tyler (Gunther), Maggie Wheeler (Janice Litman-Goralnik), Reese Witherspoon (Jill Green) and more. Other notable moments from the just-released trailer include a trivia contest à la "The One with the Embryos" and a script reading of "The One Where Everybody Finds Out".

Friends: The Reunion will be available to stream on Crave in Canada.

Friends: The Reunion will be released exclusively on WarnerMedia's HBO Max streaming service in the United States, while Crave will carry the highly-anticipated special in Canada.

  • Crave – available to subscribers with Movies+HBO, starting May 27 at 3:01 AM ET

In Canada, Crave owns the Canadian streaming rights for HBO Max original programming and is the exclusive streaming home for all 10 seasons of Friends, after securing the rights to the show in December 2020.

Subscribers will need the Movies+HBO add-on to stream the special, similar to the release of Zack Snyder's Justice League in March. The Movies+HBO add-on is priced at $9.99 (on top of the base subscription) and unlocks access to Crave's library of HBO content.

It's unlikely that the special will be released through other methods like premium video-on-demand (PVOD) through services like Apple iTunes and Prime Video. Although WarnerMedia has released several HBO Max movies in Canada through PVOD in the past year including Wonder Woman 1984 and Godzilla vs. Kong, PVOD releases tend to be used for full-fledged movies instead of standalone TV specials.

We'll update this article with other Canadian streaming options should they become available, but Crave is the only way to stream Friends: The Reunion in Canada at launch.

Corrections: this article was updated on May 22 with additional premiere details from Crave.
