Bell Increasing Prices for Internet, TV and Home Phone
By Simon Hung
January 19, 2017Bell customers will have to pay more for their services as of February 1, 2017, as the telecom giant has issued an official notice detailing an upcoming price increase to internet, TV and home phone services.
The increase varies depending on service availability and region, with the biggest price hike coming to internet subscribers. We’ve detailed the affected services and extra monthly costs below.
- Internet (all tiers, excluding Dial-up and High Speed LD bundle) - $5.00 increase
- Fibe TV (all packages, excluding Starter) - $3.00 increase
- Satellite TV (all packages, excluding Starter) - $3.00 increase
- Home phone (all packages) - $2.51 increase
In what feels like Canada’s most unpopular annual tradition, Bell has attributed the price increase to higher operating costs and an investment of $3.5 billion to upgrade and maintain their network infrastructure. The company also noted a 40% increase in network traffic and listed a number of recent innovations including 4K broadcasts, fibre-to-the-home internet and updated apps.
The timing of this move is ironic, as many independent ISPs have recently cut prices and increased bandwidth thanks to a recent CRTC ruling. If you’re looking to save on internet, leaving Bell for a third-party provider could save you a lot of money in the long run.

View allFido Home Internet was offering 3 months FREE! and thereafter $60/month for 60Mbps/10Mbps Unlimited Service.
At the time, I was getting 15/10 Unlimited from Bell for $75/month inclusive of all discounts... the best their Customer Loyalty/Retention team could offer me was to up the speed to 25/10 Unlimited for the same $75/month and no FREE months. Oh, and provide me with a warning about Fido over-promising on their speed claims!!
It's been almost a year now since my switch to Fido.
As far as Fido over-promising on their speed claims ... My upload speed has been consistently ~10Mbps.. but my download speed has been CONSISTENTLY 75Mbps to 90Mbps. It may change in the next 12 months, but so far, so good.
It's just a metaphor that what both parties agreed to should stay the same way.
Really pissed off by Bell. not that $5 is a big deal, but how they do business and treat customers....
They charge me th regular fees and then give me credits for 2 years. I have Fibe internet. $150 with a $75 credit. Home phone for $40 with a $40 credit and Fibe TV for $75 with a $50 credit.
All the credits have expiry dates. I plan to cancel after the credits expire.
Regardless even in a contract if they really wanted to increase, most just have to give 30 days notice.
I didn’t know contract/penalty fees existed anymore for home Internet (except for Businesses). If they didn’t give you anything when you signed up (like a subsidy for a mobile device for example) you shouldn’t have any penalty fees to pay when cancelling your service...
And yes, they always send out notices when increasing fees.

Doesn't mean we have to like it.
they had been doing that to my landline and internet back in the days, they will always increase the price without telling you. this will continue whether you like it or not
Rep. told me Bell sent out a notification Dec. 2016/Jan. 2017 about the increase and there is nothing they can do about that increase right now(or back then).
Spent quite some time try to tell them that's a breach of the contract i signed up for, no use.
Any one in the same shoes?
Any internet deals around now?
thanks,
They control the actual physical network and yet they can sell to their incumbents and their incumbents in turn like Teksavvy, Carrytel etc... can sell at a much lower cost then they can !
I placed a long distance call once or twice a week one time and BHell phones me to inquire if I am a business or not and they will increase my cost if I was a business ...wtf where do they get these idiots to actually discourage customers from using their long distance services which by the way is the most expensive !
Bellas haemorrhaging cash and consumers have cut over 500,000 van lines alone last year.
There prices are not competitive and services can easily be found be elsewhere for less.
Probably a good stock to short.
Negative growth with increased operating costs makes investors bail on a stock.
Bell will be the next Nortel in 10 years.
P.S. Since we're talking about mobility now, I left Fido to go to PM, but came back for the Fido 6 GB for $60 plan. PM seems OK, but I was not particularly enthused by their customer service model and their no frills approach. Plus I really missed having Name Display and to a lesser extent missed iPhone Visual Voicemail.
But they're all incumbents anyway. Fido is Rogers, and Public Mobile is Telus, which ironically is partnered with Bell to share towers. If you really wanted to tell Bell and the other incumbents to suck it, you'd go to somebody like Freedom Mobile, but their cell infrastructure is horrible, so that's not recommended.
As for home phone, getting the home phone add-on for free was a nice bonus because it means I don't have to upgrade my home alarm system to GSM just yet, and I can still use my fax machine (although to be honest I only use it occasionally now, since my need for it mostly stopped about a year ago). However, it will be my second line. My main home phone line is a $10 per month cell based line using a ZTE WF721 adapter, which includes enhanced voicemail, Canada-wide calling, and caller ID.
You are not techy at all: go to costco, buy an ooma, try if you like it. if not return it. If yes, pay for a year. It's 100$/year for premium (plus tx).
You're a bit techy. There are other IP phone options for cheaper than ooma.
For internet: there's much better options than bhell.

50 / 50 unlimited bandwidth. I'm quite happy. Go Bell!
Fibe TV to be offered without the need of Fibe Internet in Q1 2017 http://www.bce.ca/news-and-media/releas ... rly-2017-1
I just got something similar to this, from a door to door bell sales rep.
Gigabyte Fibe Internet, BETTER TV, lite Phone ---- but I only have 1 receiver for tv (4k pvr).
And I only get 2 months of HBO --- all for $100+Tax.
It was worth cancelling my rogers for this

But Bell rather make the consumer pay and get $$ from the government
