RedFlagDeals.com Will Be Down from 6-10 AM ET on Thursday, August 4

By Kate Musgrove

The RedFlagDeals.com forums are being upgraded and as a result, the site will be down from 6-10 AM ET on Thursday, August 4. During the site outage, you can find updates on our Twitter and Facebook pages.

If you're curious about the new forums, here's what Tom, our Community Manager, had to say about the new features we'll be getting:

Responsive design
Our forums will now automatically scale to whatever device you use to provide the optimal experience for that screen size. The biggest upgrade here is the experience on mobile devices.

Image uploads within the forums
Want to add an image to your post? You won’t have to use an external image host as you can now upload up to 20 images per post directly to our forum. You have your choice of adding these inline in your post or use a gallery. Images may be up to 10mb in size.

Thread Summary
It’s like a mini Wikipedia entry located under each original post. This new feature will allow most users to start or edit an entry to help bring useful information to the top of every thread. Users are able to access the edit history of this as well to see what was previously contained here.

Trending topics
A new way to look at the Hot Deals forum. There is a new tab within the Hot Deals forum called “Trending”. The system uses a fancy algorithm based off of replies, votes, views and time to identify the most popular threads at the moment and showcases them here. Hot Deals often moves very quickly and it’s easy to miss a great deal. This new tab should help with that.

Search that works
For regular users of our forum, you’d know that search did not always return the best results. Title search was especially bad. Now you should have a much easier time finding the threads and posts you’re looking for.

Video and Social Media embedding
Just paste a URL from Instagram, Twitch, Twitter, Vimeo, Vine or YouTube into your post and it’ll automatically embed into your post. There’s no need for tags. All you need is the URL.

And much more!

    • I like it! How about colour configurations? Instead of seeing white and red, I want something that suits my taste..ie Blue and black.

Blue and black doesn't really fit in with our colour scheme but who knows, we may go through a complete rebranding/redesign in the future that is black and blue.

    • Don't care how it looks, if you say thread title search is finally fixed, I'm a happy man. Guess I can stop bumping that 2 year old thread :)

edit: Just checked it out on my phone. Looks pretty slick.

edit 2: Just tried the search by title and it actually works. This shouldn't make me so damn happy but it does.

    • Q1: All the BB codes work in Preview site still, yes?

They seem fine to me in Preview Hot Deals, but strange, my evil-twin "Jerry's List" thread there is all messed up, no formatting at all, and I used basic codes only, Bold, Underline, Indent/List
      http://preview.forums.redflagdeals.com/ ... q-1685293/

The replies are wrong too, QUOTE didn't work

Q2: And where is the Preview site data from? snapshot from 7/26?

Q3: will existing Thanks, BST feedbacks, PM, all get carried over during the "cutover"?

    • I like some of the softer fonts and overall a little cleaner look. I'll play with it a little more but I did notice that in "The Toronto Blue Jays/MLB Thread" there seems to be some wasted space around where it says score +5...why is that area so big? Takes up way too much room.

..basically the area where the below appears:

A1: We have to do something special after migrating the data to ensure all BB code from the current forum will work on the new forum. It might not be working properly on the preview site but it will be fixed when we do the actual upgrade.

A2: It should be from July 26th yes. There should be a couple more refreshings of this data before we launch but as I said earlier, nothing done on the preview site will be saved.

A3: Everything will be carried forward when we upgrade. We'll announce the upgrade plan when it's finalized. Likely the forums will go down for maintenance and that'll be the cut off. The devs will work their magic and _ hours later it'll be back up all upgraded.

In some forums this space appears emptier than others. Hot Deals for instance would make better use of it and it needed to be large enough for that forums needs.

This was discussed and we liked the idea but unfortunately we weren't able to squeeze it into the features list for launch. Hopefully we'll be able to add it in in the near future. One the great things about upgrading to PHPBB is that it makes adding new features a lot easier. On our current platform it was too difficult to do and that's why we haven't added many features to the forum in past few years

We're actually working on a dedicated app for our forums which we hope to release soon after we upgrade the forum. This will include a great notification system. The reason we're making a separate app for the forums is that the forum component itself is very complex and trying to squeeze all these major components into the same app isn't ideal.

    • Unfortunately, many PHPBB add-ons have security flaws, so be careful.

Doesn't the font look really really pale? As it is right now on Vbulletin it is perfect.

And well, I must say I don't like downvoting systems. I have yet to see one where it isn't used to bury unpopular opinions.

The font seems fine to me. Does it appear pale to you on every device?

Being able to down-vote is definitely something we'll be closely monitoring after launch. Like I mentioned we do have ways to curb abuse and currently there is no system in place to hide negatively ranked posts. Hot Deals is where the biggest use of the system will come into play and even then it only uses the OP's score.

    • Overall first impression is there is too much wasted space. I come to a forums to quickly browse the titles of the posts to see which one I want to dive in to. One the preview site a good 70% of titles are multiple lines now and impossible for the brain to quickly absorb.

It looks like you made the overall "main forum content" width smaller and then make the "main title areas" even smaller. Two reductions makes it too small IMO

All the columns padding's need to be reduced but the "score" column for sure needs a reduction.

Regarding the empty space, a lot of it was due to the new responsive design. Other factors came into play as well. A Hot Deals thread with a long title and lots of tags will use up more of this space in desktop view. This doesn't mean improvements can't be made and we'll take user feedback into consideration.

For the titles, are you hiding the sidebar? It's not too dissimilar to how it is now for me. At smaller desktop widths it will more frequently wrap titles to 2 lines.

The score column takes away from the title column so I understand where you're coming from. I hide the side bar so the impact of this is minimal in comparison to your view. For now that isn't something we're going to modify however we have discussed things such as being able to hide select columns. If we receive enough feedback about a specific feature/element, we'll definitely look into improving it.

In it's current form I find the side bar to be quite useful. If it remains in its current form I will continue to find it useful and will likely never hide it.

I wish you had of thought more about different views prior to solidifying the width or withholding the show/hide feature. I would venture to guess that there are more users in my boat than in your boat.

We're modifying the side bar a bit. I'll post the exact details soon as I don't remember them off the top of my head.

So far we've had a couple hundred people check out the preview site and you're the first person to give us feedback on the width of the title column. We did test every size for usability and don't think anything is really lost. Yes more wrapping will occur but all the information is still there.

I'm not a fan of the new interface wrapping titles in two or more lines or using a (disproportionate) big font for them.

In the new interface, the font used for the titles seems too big wrt the fonts used for the rest of the info in each entry which is very distracting. The font sizes in the old interface are visually more balanced in size (anyway, the title is a hyperlink in another color so there is little need to use a much larger font to highlight it).

Each deal entry should be restricted to two lines with the full title in a single line (i.e., no wrap up title to two lines) to scan the list with a quick glance (one row, one title, one line). For smaller desktop widths, the title might could be truncated [my preferred option] or a column hidden (automatically) to keep the maximum title width or having the list interface switched to a mobile view [I guess this is the reason for the title wrap up in 'smaller desktops': windows tablet users browsing the site in desktop mode].

      +1

Downvoting is the major defect of reddit. There it's primarily used to shout down dissenting posts, leading to a culture of self-reinforcing opinions that are often biased or wrong.

One of the things I most appreciate about RFD is that I often learn from people who have something different to say. A climate of respect encourages those posts. Downvoting systems are simply not consistent with that climate of respect. The current system of Thanks for especially helpful posts and Report Post for those that violate the rules is better, and should not be changed.

Up/down, hmm, I doubt I would care as much and gaining down votes would make me disinclined to post at all. Not that it really matters overly, but the thanks was a nice differentiator, not reddity at any rate.

One feature of phpBB forums is the software can limit the size of images and/or shrink larger images to smaller sizes that are clickable to full size. All to often on the current RFD people post images that take up half a page of a thread but serve to illustrate some trivial point. (Followed by the next poster who Quotes that image and fills the rest of the page...) Hopefully the powers-that-be will enable these sorts of features to improve on the current system.
