Apple Unveils iPhone 11, Apple Watch Series 5 and 10.2" iPad

By Simon Hung

Tech-tember is in full swing, as Apple held their annual September Special Event this past Tuesday to reveal the latest updates to some of their most popular gadgets.

During the two-hour keynote, Apple introduced their newest iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch models for 2019 and provided updates to their upcoming Apple Arcade and Apple TV+ services, which are set to launch in Canada on September 19 and November 1, respectively -- click here to learn more about Apple TV+ and how much the streaming service will cost in Canada.

Here's a short rundown of Apple's trio of new products and when you can order them in Canada.

iPhone

Three new iPhones were unveiled during the event -- iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, each with design refinements over the previous generation and big camera upgrades across the board.

iPhone 11 is Apple's successor to the iPhone XR and retains the same 6.1" Liquid Retina Display as its predecessor with an improved aluminium/glass design, but adds the new A13 Bionic processor that's up to 20% faster than the A12 Bionic, a dual rear camera setup with one wide and one ultra-wide lens, improved IP68 water resistance and more. iPhone 11 starts at $979.00 and comes in six colours with 64GB, 128GB or 256GB of storage.

iPhone 11 features two rear cameras and is available in six colours.

iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max are successors to the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, respectively, marking the first time Apple has used the Pro moniker on an iPhone. Both models have an improved stainless steel/glass design and feature brighter Super Retina XDR OLED displays in 5.8" (11 Pro) or 6.5" (11 Pro Max) sizes, the A13 Bionic processor and a triple rear camera setup with one wide, one ultra-wide and one telephoto lens. iPhone 11 Pro starts at $1379.00, while iPhone 11 Pro Max starts at $1519.00, each available in four colours with 64GB, 128GB or 256GB of storage.

iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max have three rear cameras and a new matte glass back.

All iPhone 11 models will be available for pre-order at the Apple Store starting September 13 at 8:00 AM ET and will ship September 20.

Apple Watch

The new Apple Watch Series 5 was also showcased during the event, with upgrades including a new always-on display, built-in compass and a titanium case option for the world's most popular smartwatch.

Apple Watch Series 5 comes in the same 40mm or 44mm sizes as the previous-generation with aluminum, stainless steel, ceramic or titanium case options. The most notable new features include the addition of an always-on OLED display, which lets you view the time without having to raise your wrist to wake the screen, along with a built-in compass for improved navigation and fitness tracking.

Apple Watch Series 5 features an always-on display that lets you view screen without having to raise your wrist.

Apple Watch Studio was also launched, which lets shoppers configure custom Apple Watch combinations online at the Apple Store instead of picking one of the standard configurations.

Apple Watch Series 5 is available to order at the Apple Store now starting at $529.00 and will ship September 20.

iPad

A new seventh-generation iPad was announced to replace the sixth-generation 9.7" iPad released last year. The new iPad sports a larger 10.2" Retina Display and adds the first-generation Smart Connector, which means it's compatible with Apple's full-size Smart Keyboard and other third-party accessories.

The new iPad features a larger 10.2" display and support for Apple's Smart Keyboard.

Otherwise, much of the new 10.2" iPad remains the same as the 2018 model, including the thick-bezel design with Touch ID, A10 Fusion processor, 8MP rear camera and Apple Pencil support.

The new 10.2" iPad comes in three colours with 32GB or 128GB of storage and is available to order at the Apple Store now starting at $429.00, with orders shipping September 30.

I agree.. it doesn't make sense to take away the 2x camera and replace it with a 0.5x camera. The Pro models are coming next.

    • Would be shameful if 11's liquid retina is still only 720P. At least they lowered the price.

    • Well I was hoping for iPhone XS to get good price reduction but didn't hear anything of it. I think they will do the same like last year with iPhone X, discontinue it and allow the carriers to sell at reduced cost.

    • iPhone XR vs iPhone 11

      Very very weak upgrade.

      A12 -> A13
      And Ultrawide camera.

But a nearly $200 price difference. Just save the money and get a XR.

    • Pro MAX is 10% heavier than the XS Max. And here my XS Max is already straining my wrists. IMO Samsung S10 series are much more comfortable to hold because they are lighter.

And Apple continues to fleece everyone with the 64 gb base model lol. So much for "Pro".

    • FMF seriously I know it's marketing strategy but this is nonsense. Seriously 64GB shouldn't even exist anymore.

      Greediness at its finest.

No wonder why sales continue to decline.

    • I'm an addict but strangely enough I know when to DRAW THE LINE. Crazy not stupid as the old saying goes.

I only got the XS Gold because my boy hooked me up last year when Freedom discounted the 64GB by $420. He switched to Freedom and I paid the Tab. He couldn't afford to take advantage of the deal.

Either way I got bored after 4 months and I ended just giving the XS to his wife when she gave birth to their baby boy, Nicholas.

Unless the same situation happens, I will not be buying it. BTW I skipped the X.

Which is sad and funny, but even worse, the fact that its not an early 2020 release, but its 2020 September/October.

Think we're witnessing the death of a giant. Could be wrong, but with Jobs out of the picture in terms of pushing boundaries, and Ives out as a designer looking for the next cool thing to make, all you've got left is the bean counting businessman in charge of the company who's very good at squeezing margins and cutting costs, but nothing else.

      RIP

    • Trade in Value of 8 plus right now is 390+ tax so $440 is not bad. Could get $550 on kijiji but there is the extra hassle there, worth it to trade it in for an XR or 11? its for the wife who is hell bent on a 128 or 256 gb upgrade and big photo taker

    • Say what you want about Apple but at $699 USD for a phone with the most powerful mobile processor and QHD display I'd say it's fair to say they are now strong competitors in the mid-price range as Samsung gets more and more pricey for phones that would get lucky if they get half the software support lifespan apple does.
