BiWay is Set to Make a Comeback in Summer 2019

By Ambia Staley

It's been nearly 18 years since discount chain BiWay shuttered its doors, but if you've been feeling nostalgic for their inexpensive apparel, housewares, and iconic black and white plastic bags, then you'll have something to be excited about, because the store is set to make a comeback in 2019!

In a recent interview, Mal Coven, one of the key figures behind the BiWay brand, announced that he's planning to resurrect the stores -- which originally closed in 2001-- with a slightly different concept.

The new store is expected to be called "BiWay $10 Store", and as its name suggests, it will carry a variety of goods such as apparel, household items, toys, toiletries, and food for $10 or under.

"BiWay is a legacy brand," Coven said when speaking of his plans. "We carried a lot of brands, but never junk. This will be a new concept store with branded, quality goods."

The first store, with 7,500 square feet of space, is expected to open in Toronto in August 2019. Coven also aims to open 4 more stores in unnamed locations by the end of 2020.

Did you shop at BiWay it was originally open? Are you excited for its return? Share your thoughts in the comments!

    • I used to shop at Bi-way. Looking forward to see what they’ll be selling.

    • Weird to see it come back. Kids used to get bullied back in the day for parents who shopped at Bi-Way. Thankfully, we've seen matured (although debatable) since then.

    • Great, now all the kids can make fun of each other again by suggesting parents shopped at Bi Way just like when I was a kid.

    • Walmart and dollerama will smash. But for nostalgia it does bring me memories. Aisles and aisles of garbage! LOL ;)

    • Sounds like Dollarama ... expecting the same, with higher prices.

    • Hopefully Target follows suit and comes back to Canada in the future. Ah... Biway... the days of buying cheap GUESS jeans, and other brands that no one cared about at the time.

    • How about Bargain Harold's and Consumers Distributing? ;-)

    • There's no exact location revealed for BiWay yet, but I've seen North York, and the Bathurst and Steeles area in different sources!

    • There's that definitive BIWAY smell that you can never forget... Bargain Harolds almost had it, but not quite... the smell of offgasing from overseas plastics...

    • Going to be a retail challenge competing against Giant Tiger plus the carbon taxes that Ontarians will be joining in paying along with other Canadians.
I hope there will be slip-on footwear options and some novelty food items.

    • My local Biway used to be a bargain Harold’s. My parents shopped there and we waited outside so none of our friends saw us. Haha.
