The announcement, made early Monday, will see 27 under-performing store locations as well as a few plants and support centres closed across the country.

The closures will mainly effect Rona stores, a Quebec chain which the company acquired in 2016. We've gone ahead and listed the impacted store locations below.

In addition to the above store closures, Lowe's will also shutter a truss plant in St. John's, and a block plant in Kamloops, as well as support centres in both Mississauga and St. John's.

Regarding the closures and the impact on Lowe's and Rona employees, Lowe's president and CEO Marvin R. Ellison said, "We believe our people are the foundation of our business and essential to our future growth, and we are making every effort to transition impacted associates to nearby Lowe's stores."

In additon to the 31 closures across Canada, Lowe's also announced that 20 locations across the U.S. will be closed immediately.

While exact closure dates are unknown for the the impacted Canadian stores, the company has noted that they are expected to close before the end of January 2019.

For now. This is how these things always start.

    • I stand corrected. Rona is now owned by Lowe's. And Lowe's does not disclose the Rona profits in their quarterly updates to shareholders.

When Lowe’s bought Rona they planned to keep a few of the Rona home and garden stores open, but mostly planned to keep some of the smaller Rona stores in rural areas open

    • What Best Buy did to Futureshop, the same thing Lowes will do to RONA.

A big American company usually doesn't buy a smaller Canadian company so the smaller company thrives, usually after some time they will shut them up.

Shop at Home Hardware if you can , to support a Canadian business.

    • There has to be a massive downsizing of the Rona stores in major cities coming. Near where a relative lives there is a Rona store, and Lowes recently built a large store a couple blocks away. There's no reason for that Rona store to continue to exist because the Lowes is probably taking away most of its business. I suspect the same is happening all over - as Lowes builds up their stores the Ronas in the neighborhood will have to go. I'm sure a lot of people will be upset over the layoffs and that's always unfortunate, especially for the long time Rona employees who will have to start over somewhere else.

The other Rona , south of me has been converted into a much smaller store. Almost no one to help you there and overall a sad place.

To be honest I've passed by that Centerpoint location many times and always felt it was an odd area to have one when there's more condos than homes in that location. I did too like the smaller and quieter store.

    • I'm surprised these stores are still branded Rona, seems Lowes wanted targeted regions only. This was likely the plan from the takeover point 24(?) months ago.

Hopefully they rebrand & rework the remaining Rona stores... The former Rona mgmt is likely dissolved and well paid out so no longer a problem at the board meetings.

Agreed. I've never been inside and I've walked past it numerous times and it looks super small and cramped. It'd be better served to be used as a restaurant instead as that plaza is seriously lacking some good food options.
