Canada’s New $10 Bill is Vertical and Features Viola Desmond

March 8, 2018You’ll have to look to at your money a little differently in the future, because the Bank of Canada has unveiled a brand new vertically-oriented $10.00 bill, slated to come into circulation in late-2018.
A dedicated website has been set up to flaunt the new banknote (click the "SPIN" icon 20 times to unlock a neat Easter egg) and its release comes two years after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau first announced plans to refresh all of Canada’s banknotes with new designs and security features over the next decade. This new $10.00 bill is the first to be unveiled and marks the first time that a Canadian banknote will implement a vertical orientation.
Viola Desmond, an iconic figure in Canadian civil rights history, is featured on the front of the bill and the banknote itself includes several design elements with a human rights theme, including an image of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg, an eagle feather to symbolize the freedoms of First Nations and an excerpt from the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
At the unveiling ceremony, Finance Minister Bill Morneau emphasized the importance of equality and Viola Desmond’s impact on Canadian history, stating “Her story serves as inspiration to all Canadians and acts as a powerful reminder of how one person’s actions can help trigger change across generations. As we strive for equality across our economy and in every facet of our country, we hope this constant reminder of Viola’s story will help inspire a new generation of women, men, girls and boys to fight for what they believe, take their place and create a better future for themselves and all Canadians.”
Security features on the new bill include a unique polymer texture with some transparent areas, raised ink on portraits and text, colour-shifting patterns on the eagle feather and metallic images embedded into the transparent window and other symbols across the note.
Following the release of this bill, the Bank of Canada plans to issue new banknotes every few years, starting with a redesigned $5.00 bill that will feature a new iconic Canadian. A consultation process will be held to seek input and suggestions from Canadians and you can click here to read more about the new $10.00 bill and upcoming changes to other denominations.

View allAssuming the new $10s were to be released in November or early December, I will say this muh: if I don't see any in my wallet by Christmas, chances are the last remaining banks that ordered tens finally stopped ordering them after a long run, and our beloved $10 bill may end up going the way of the half dollar and the U.S. $2 bill.
That should give you a hint of what's happening politically with Canada XD
