Amazon Brings Fire 7 and Fire HD 8 Tablets to Canada

By Simon Hung

Amazon has brought another product north of the border right before the holiday season, as Amazon Fire 7 and Fire HD 8 tablets are now available in Canada!

Amazon’s Fire line of tablets were first introduced in 2011, with the current generation Fire 7 and Fire HD 8 models being released in June 2017. The tablets run on a custom version of Android called FireOS and are generally marketed as a budget-friendly tablet for basic tasks like web browsing and media streaming. The main selling points with Fire tablets include the price and seamless integration with Amazon services like Alexa, Kindle and Prime Video, making it a great option as a starter tablet for kids or to use as a media tablet around the house. You can also download third-party apps through the Amazon Appstore including Facebook, Netflix, Spotify and thousands of other apps.

The Fire 7 and Fire HD 8 launch marks the third major Canadian product launch we've seen from Amazon in the past month, as the company also introduced the Fire TV Stick Basic Edition and brought Alexa, Echo and Prime Music to Canada in November.

Both tablets are available to order now, with all configurations except for the 16GB Fire 7 eligible for delivery before Christmas.

    • Guys,

I had an Ipad air 32 GB but the fiancee broke it, how does this compare?
      Sorry about the NEWB question.
We tried a Samsung Galaxy Tab E but it was very sluggish and returned it

      Thanks in advance

It runs Fire OS. It's a customized skin overlayed over top of Android 5 I think it is.

My brother sent me one for Hanukwanzmas last year.

Please correct the title though, it is a "tablet" not a "table".

Bought 2 of these 32gb ones for $34 USD from Amazon warehouse in the states which turned out to be new. These are not worth $130. If you want a $100 tablet there are better choices out there. Also no where near an iPad.

      How is this even possible? they still think a resolution of 1024 x 600 (7) or 1280 x 800 (8) can sell in 2017?
Kobo 7 HD came out in August 2013 and it had 1920 x 1200...
      For $50USD it isn't bad.

You serious? You need to look at $400+ options to be comparable.

You get what you pay for. These are entry level tablets.
If you're looking for an Android tablet that compares in speed to the iPad Air, look for the tab s2, zenpad 3s, mediapad m3, shield tablet, or something similar. Even the tab A will be faster than the tab E.

100% - these are entry level tablets. That said - best you can buy for under $100 IMO.

If you downgrade to this tablet, coming from the Ipad Air, you may soon find yourself without a "fiancee".
Or, if you already tied the knot and now you give her this tablet as a gift, she will scratch your "retina"😂.

Nexus 7 too, and you could buy it from shop.ca for $100-$150 depending on the number of coupons you found. They're also more powerful than this and still relevant.

Yes, but not from the Rakuten ebay store; some other ebay store. $49.99.

I have the Arc HD7, for $30 it was a fantastic deal but its battery life is pretty bad - 2 hours of web browsing, 90 minutes if watching a movie. Fire HD8's battery life seems to be 5 to 10 hours depending on the conditions of the test. For that reason, I'd gladly pay extra to get the Fire. Also, some apps can't be installed on the Kobo because of how old Android version is.

given the price is 49.99 regular 59.99 CAD is about right. except it's the old model without alexa. not that the person using this will use alexa but i digress.

anyway, gonna have to open it and add google play and remove the ads now. oh well. it is what it is.

Amazon stopped their 7 days price protection policy, its now YMMV.

    • How's this for rudimentary gaming? Want to gift this to a friend that plays Contest of Champions a lot.

Would probably sideload with F-Droid and use Yalp Store to grab APKs from Google Play Store.

About YouTube, couldn't you use a 3rd-party client like NewPipe?

Not that I care about Alexa but I don't see that it's an "old model" either.
