Amazon Brings Alexa, Echo and Prime Music to Canada

By Simon Hung

Amazon has finally brought a trio of popular products and services north of the border right before the holiday season, as Alexa, Echo and Prime Music are now officially available in Canada!

All three are cornerstone products for Amazon in the United States and the launch marks an important milestone for Amazon Canada, as it's the first time Canadians will have access to these new products and services through Amazon.ca. We’ve listed a few details about each product to help give you an idea of what each one has to offer.

Alexa

Alexa is Amazon’s voice assistant, similar to Apple’s Siri or Google’s Assistant. At launch, Alexa is only available through Echo smart speakers and is compatible with several third-party Alexa-enabled services from CBC, Sportsnet, Spotify, Yellow Pages and more.

You can use your voice to control smart products using Alexa.

Users can summon Alexa by simply saying “Alexa,” then speaking naturally. The assistant is capable of searching for information like the weather and sports scores, but can also integrate with smart products and perform more advanced tasks like controlling lighting or changing the channel on your television.

Echo

Amazon’s Echo smart speakers also make their debut in Canada and there are three products available at launch -- Echo Dot, Echo and Echo Plus -- with introductory prices of $49.99 (regularly $69.99), $99.99 (regularly $129.99) and $169.99 (regularly $199.99), respectively.

The Amazon Echo Dot is available to pre-order at an introductory price of $49.99.

All three are powered by Alexa and can recognize your voice from across a room, allowing you to perform tasks like playing music, placing calls, making lists and more.

At their core, all three Echo speakers can perform the same tasks, but the pricier Echo and Echo Plus have more stylish designs and better speakers, making them more suitable for playing music versus the more budget-friendly Echo Dot and the Echo Plus can also act as a hub for smart devices.

Prime Music

Amazon Prime Music is now available for free to all Prime members and the service is available through desktop browsers or mobile apps. The service is a welcome addition to Amazon Prime and members can stream over one million songs, on-demand and ad-free. Plus, the service integrates seamlessly with Alexa and Echo speakers, letting you navigate playlists and albums by voice.

Amazon Prime members can now stream over one million songs for free with Prime Music.

The reported Prime Music library of one million songs is fewer than Apple Music or Spotify, who boast libraries of up to 40 million songs, but its inclusion with Prime memberships makes it a great value for existing members and gives Amazon a more formidable presence in the streaming industry.

Amazon Prime members can access Prime Music now, while Alexa services and Echo speakers will be available in early December. You can pre-order Amazon Echo speakers now at their introductory prices for a limited time and you’ll likely see them sold in Whole Foods Market stores in the near-future.

An Amazon Prime membership is $79.99 per year in Canada and you can read our guide to learn more about what it has to offer.

    • FYI Spotify and Apple Music have 30+ million songs. I wonder if the 29+ million difference would effect me

Edit: not working for me. It connects to my US Amazon account which isn't prime.

    • Same here. It's not working for me as a prime member and asks for more money/trial sign up. Maybe they are working out the quarks.

      It's working for me.

Searched for Eminem to start. It only has 4 albums of his, nothing since 2004. Not a good start.

Looking for some less current stuff again I searched The Used. There's just one song.

Doesn't have the new Macklemore album.

I have the Amazon video and Amazon store apps installed already and they work.

My only thought is that maybe its connecting to my .com account and not .ca since they are the same email address. Haven't seen a place to select country.

    • Worked fine for my on the iOS app. I like a mix of new and old music and it has a decent amount of new stuff from some quick searching but from the random selection I chose to search of my Spotify songs it’s missing big stuff like all of The Beatles, no Springsteen. Was hoping this would be able to replace Spotify burn spotify has everything I want so for now this will go unused.

Only thing I like about Amazon Prime Video is that we finally get to watch their exclusives like Transparent, The Grand Tour, Man in the High castle, and it looks like they’re just getting started with their announcement of a Lord of the Rings show this week.

    • Not working for me. When I try to browse I am told it is only available to Prime members. I used the same email address for my USA and Canadian accounts so I assume that is part of the problem like others. Hopefully they resolve it. Even I the selection isn't amazing it's still nice to get more for your money. I'm sure I'll find at least some things to listen to

    • I like Amazon a lot, use it very often with prime. I just logged into the Amazon Music app, good starting point.. I'm sure they'll improve it over time but for now I'll stick to paying for Spotify. Nice value that's included in my Prime membership though.

Mine's working fine. Galaxy S8+ with latest firmware. It's a decent app to begin with. I'm sure they'll have to improve a lot to compare with Spotify (my favourite) and Apple Music. Not alot of music content at all at the moment.. sound quality is amazing, it's loud and sounds way better than Spotify oddly (settings checked in Spotify).. Lots of work to do.. I'm a Prime member, it's nice that it's included within the membership. But this is nowhere near comparable to Spotify at the moment. Pressure is on for Amazon to add content.. lots of it. Chinese & Punjabi music is necessary.

I’m on iOS 11.2 beta 3. iPhone X. I’ll stumble over to my computer at some point to access the web browser. I have an amazon us account with the same login so that might be f’ing stuff up

My alexa app recognizes the amazon music sub now but nothing is playable. I only care about this to use with my hoard of echo dots lol

    • Yeah selection is awful. looks like unless it's mainstream there's not a whole lot of selection. Even some stuff I found only has 1 or 2 songs from the album.

On on same iOS version. Doesn’t seem to be an app issue but something on certain accounts. I have an American account with my same email so it’s not that.

    • I suspect the confusion is that Amazon Prime music is different from Amazon unlimited music. Prime music is simply curated, like Google Play does, except ad free.

      Unlimited is $10 per month

    • Prime is essentially useless to me in NL since it doesn't typically increase the speed of deliveries, but if this had a good selection of music, I'd definitely be tempted to sign up and leave Spotify. Hopefully it will get there.

Digital content and services may only be available to customers located in the U.S. and are subject to the terms and conditions of Amazon Digital Services LLC. Amazon Unlimited Music is 7.99month/Prime members. And 9.99/non prime members. That is for US customers only. Amazon has created this Amazon Music app for Canadian consumers? It's selection is really lacking at the moment.

    • Hopefully their offerings gets up to speed with what Google Music or Spotify has. Since most people already have Amazon Prime anyways, this is definitely a treat!
