How to Stream Hockey Night in Canada for Free

By Simon Hung

Hockey Night in Canada is one of the most important time-honoured traditions in Canada, as thousands of households tune into CBC every Saturday night to watch their favourite hockey team.

It’s been a Saturday night tradition since 1931 and has been televised since 1952, but as more Canadians ditch their cable subscriptions, it can get tricky to watch regularly. Luckily, you don’t have to miss a single game if you have internet access, because you can legally stream Hockey Night in Canada games for free!

Never miss another Saturday night Nylander-to-Matthews connection.

Rogers acquired the broadcast rights to Hockey Night in Canada in 2014 and there are a number of options to stream games on computers, smartphones, video game consoles and set-top boxes. We’ve listed the streaming options available for desktop, mobile and TV platforms to help you get started -- note that a Canadian IP address is required and game availability will vary depending on your region.

Desktop

Mobile Apps

  • CBC Sports (Android, iOS) -- the CBC broadcast of Hockey Night in Canada is streamed through the CBC Sports app in the Video tab. You can also access them in the CBC video player through mobile browsers
  • NHL (Android, iOS) -- you can stream Hockey Night in Canada via GameCentre LIVE through the NHL app. A free MyRogers account is required and you can access the broadcast by tapping the TV icon

TV

  • NHL -- the NHL app is available on devices including Apple TV, PlayStation, Xbox and more. Installation varies by device and streams are broadcast via GameCentre LIVE. A free MyRogers account is required and this method is an easy way to stream Hockey Night in Canada onto a television
  • TV antenna -- you can find television antennas for under $20.00 and CBC broadcasts over-the-air in most regions, so you can watch Hockey Night in Canada and other over-the-air channels in your area for free

All streams air pre-game shows and intermission segments including Coach's Corner. Streams using GameCentre LIVE do not broadcast commercial breaks and you can also view archived Hockey Night in Canada games for free with the platforms that use GameCentre LIVE.

Streams are broadcast in high definition, but quality will vary depending on your connection speed. Streaming live video can use hefty amounts of bandwidth, so stream sparingly or change the stream quality to standard definition if you're on a mobile device or have a monthly bandwidth cap. We've listed the entire 2017/18 Hockey Night in Canada schedule below so you can see the games available this season.

Better or worse than OTA with an antenna?

I'm fairly certain that they've been doing this for like 10 years, this is definitely nothing new.

Don't know about this year but before quality was good but not as good as cable. OTA is best as the signal is less compressed.

HNIC games also stream free through GameCentre Live. You need a Rogers account (you can make one for free) and it works through the NHL app on PS4/Xbox/Apple TV/Roku if you want an easy way to stream games to a TV on Saturdays

Game Centre region locks though right? Does CBC?

I'm in Toronto and have been able to watch Leafs HNIC games through the NHL app on my PS4 for a couple of years now, so I don't think there's any region blocks for the national broadcast. Not 100% sure about which broadcast people in Sens/Habs regions are able to access though

    • Good to know for when I cut the cord. GameCentre Live is not free since you need a Rogers account.

The CBC doesn’t have over the air in places like here in 66% Englishspeaking Moncton (we only get Radio-Canada, CTV and Global).

The publicly funded network only has 14 transmitters for the entire country! https://cbchelp.cbc.ca/hc/en-ca/article ... n-my-area-

    • Wow, Rogers is being generous allowing the CBC to stream the games for free. Wonder what they'll raise the price of to cover this.

    • Does this work if you are in the US?

    • - OTA has less delay (streaming makes your neighbors scream before you, better have thick walls and closed windows)
      - OTA has 5.1 Audio and streaming probably does not (not a big deal)
      - Streaming has awkward silence in commercials and no post-game shows

    • I should clarify that to Android TV. Nothing in the Google Play store for Google TV. There IS a CBC news app but that's it. Nor does it exist in my Samsung Tizen store. So, no loading to my 4K TV...

Sounds like another reason to pickup a cheap Chromecast

    • This is perfect for HNIC broadcasts, especially with Cast. Until Sportsnet fixes their stupid forever loop Cast issue with their app (I think it affects both Android and iOS), this is now the best way to watch HNIC.
