The Canadian Price Matching Cheat Sheet

The Canadian Price Matching Cheat Sheet

By Simon Hung

Whether you’re buying a new television or National Treasure on DVD, there are two important questions every shopper should ask themselves before making a purchase -- is it posted on RFD and is it cheaper anywhere else?

Price comparisons are a must when shopping and price matching has become ubiquitous for many savvy shoppers. To help you find the best deals, we've created this handy cheat sheet so you can see the price matching policies of over 40 stores in Canada at a glance.

While every store will have their own price matching guidelines, there are a few general rules across all stores.

  • Products must be the same model, in stock and sold by a Canadian retailer
  • If a store price matches Amazon.ca, the product must be sold and shipped directly by Amazon
  • Limited-time or limited-quantity promotions usually aren't eligible
  • Major holiday sales like Boxing Day or Black Friday are usually excluded
  • Most stores don't price match wholesale stores like Costco

Before you embark on your price matching journey, take a look at the table below to see which stores beat or match competitor pricing and read our tips on how to do it effectively.

    • It would be more useful when you update that the stores match competitor price in-store or also online. Thank you OP

    • There's a big difference between "beat competitor pricing by 10%" versus matching it and beating the difference by 10%.

    • Many of the grocery chains only price match for specific stores, this would be beneficial to note

    • NCIX will only match if their cost is lower otherwise it's a crapshoot.

    • Home Depot and Lowes beat the lower price by 10%, not 10% of the difference. Please correct.

    • The idea of this chart comes from a good place but it's a giant YMMV in real life. For example, Amazon does -not- price match, they have no price match policy, they say here they do PM but they don't; it's discretionary only. Canadian Tire will -not- price match Amazon, neither will Home Depot. Walmart will only match an advertisement. etc etc.

Almost all the stores listed here have caveats and exceptions. Don't rely on this sheet if you think it's a guideline for price matching, because you'll soon find it isn't.. One giant YMMV is what truly defines price matching..

    • Walmart and Superstore, will only match advertised sale -- there has to be a sale date....no date, no price match.... ps: just wondering, in the past I only happened to pm for identical product....but does any store pm produce and meat?

    • Canadian tire is wrong... Basically they price match and also give 10% of the lower price in Canadian tire money... as in price match something that is in CT for 120 bucks to say Walmart for 100 bucks. So you buy the product for 100 bucks at CT and also get 10 bucks of CT money.

    • Why is RFD using a banner from Future Shop for these highly inaccurate articles? Where are the sources for information provided? Its like the authors are pulling information out of their buttholes.

    • Rona won't even match a different Rona location, so good luck with that. Walmart only matches flyers.

For example CT's pricematch/beat doesn't apply on online store. The times I've tried, the managers stated they would only price match local stores (walmart, home depot). Furthermore, YYMV as site states it's price match guarantee is subject to store participation, essentially giving CT managers an out if they choose to deny PM

    • Canada Computers only matches NCIX and NewEgg, and will add the estimated shipping costs to those retailers' prices.

I went in to buy a motherboard that most retailers sell for $139.99, but they sold for $169.99. Even though it had free shipping, the "best they could do" was to take $10 off. It was an easy decision for me to wait a few days for my items to arrive from NCIX or MemoryExpress, because I saved dozens of dollars.

    • Went to Canadian tire and they wouldn't even price match/beat Staples. Staples isn't even like Amazon in that they have physical stores like Canadian Tire. The idiot customer service counter guy said because it's an online item, they won't beat it. Went next doors to Best Buy and they best it with no questions asked. Avoid Canadian Tire if you can as they will try to bs their way into losing customers

    • I just got denied price matching a Wal-mart in-store item because it's not on the flyer. They don't price match "Manager Special"....

    • As of JAN 2018:

Home Depot: will price match Amazon and other online retailers. Will beat local retail pricing by 10% for in-stock items with exactly matching model numbers. Exclusions: special buys, clearance, wholesalers.

      Lowes: same as Home Depot

Reno Depot: same as Home Depot

Rona: Will beat local retail (within 25km radius) pricing by 10% for in-stock items with exactly matching model numbers. Exclusions: special buys, clearance, wholesalers. Does NOT appear to PM online retailers anymore (e.g., Amazon).
