RFD Pro Tip: Donate Your Extra Freebies and Bargains
By Kate Musgrove
December 10, 2015A month or so ago, Real Canadian Superstore ran a promotion where you got a free ham if you spent more than $225. I didn't think I would be eligible for the promotion until I got through the checkout line and realized that my grocery and household purchases indeed put me over the threshold. I'm a vegetarian, but when the cashier asked if I wanted a free ham, I said yes. For a number of years, the team at RedFlagDeals.com volunteered at the Scott Mission in Toronto. They serve two hot meals a day and I knew that they'd be happy to have a big fresh ham on hand. (And truly, I cannot overemphasize how gigantic this ham was.) Last week, Real Canadian Superstore ran a similar promotion, but this time, the reward was a frozen turkey. Again I happily accepted the bonus and again I donated it to the Scott Mission.
In both cases, I had to call the Scott Mission to confirm they wanted the donation and then hoof over there with my ham or turkey in tow before they left for the day. It would have been unquestionably easier to not take grocery store bonuses at all, but I'm really glad I did and I'm thrilled I was able to donate them. If you're looking for other ways to pass freebies and deals on to other people, here are a few suggestions:
- When you see a particularly good deal on body wash, shampoo, deodorant or other personal supplies, go ahead and get some extra -- you can donate to them to a shelter.
- If you have a baby, you'll get tons of formula samples and coupons. If you won't use them, you can pass them on to other parents you know, a women's shelter or a food bank.
- If you ever come across an especially good diaper deal, consider buying some to donate. Diapers are expensive and they are always in demand in shelters.
- If you go to a dog-friendly event like Woofstock you'll find that you come home with tons of dog treats, doggie potty bags and other freebies. Consider donating them to an animal rescue group or dog shelter!
I'm sure there are tons of other ways to pass along freebies and deals that I haven't thought of. What is your favourite way to pay it forward?
