Microsoft really hasn't been trying very hard since game pass is their bread and butter. That's basically their main selling point to bring newcomers to the console. Sony hits it out of the park way more with their free plus games, but in my opinion PS Now seems less good than game pass does. I honestly wish Microsoft would show their appreciation to us by giving us better gold games though. It seems like they don't really care much about us at all with most of the monthly offers they have like they're scraping the bottom of some really old barrel that smells weird.

    • One challenge with these games is they still give two 360 games each month, they haven't released new 360 games in years so that well is pretty much dry.

    • Games With Gold feels like something Microsoft is trying to sunset, but can't quite decide how to.

My two cents, before long they will drop the free titles every month and just make it so Gold members get access to a limited section of the Game Pass library.

    • At least with the 360 games they are your forever without needing gold if it ever runs out on you, also I heard Microsoft is working on bring more 360 games to BC since they are done with the Series X/S launch

I hate the subscription society we have become. I will always prefer to own vs rent, which is essentially what game pass is. My gold expires in May (after 4 years worth) and this is the first time i wont be renewing. I will miss games like battlefield and cod online, but will still have f2p warzone. Personally I am stuck in a hard spot as they dont seem to ever put gold on sale anymore and it’s certainly not worth $70 a year. If they did a game pass lite for less that allowed online access for games and a few free games to play I would be interested

I too hate the trend toward monthly outlay for everything - games, music, movies, even the ability to use a golf GPS app on my Apple Watch requires a yearly or monthly subscription. I still prefer having a physical copy of a game in my hands, but it seems I'm in the minority these days. On principle alone, I'll likely add the 360 games to my catalogue in order to "own" some games when I'm done with gold.

    • Actually a good month of games finally! I love tropico so i'm looking forward to playing that again. Dungeons III i've heard good things and Lego Batman is always a solid couple hours of fun like all the Lego games are.

I usually just have the one service (PS+) where I primarily game, I got the Xbone S because it was $225 years ago with 4 games (MCC being the main draw) and I needed a 4k bluray player. Only reason I got gold/gamepass is because of the deal we all know and love where you get it super cheap. Since I got GamePass and Gold been using the PS4 a lot less...but I still rather buy a physical copy than digital if I want to have a game will say

    • I've stopped even clicking Get on the Xbox One games. I don't install them, will never play them and mostly they are almost shovelware. I do click download on the OG Xbox or 360 ones because they become owned in perpetuity.

    • Is Tropico 4 console only or do you automatically get the PC version?

    • I've never understood how this really works.
I read that the games are free as long as we have a Gold subscription. Is that true?
Harold91 mentioned that Original and XBOX 360 are owned in perpetuity, so the forever ownership applies only to these old games, not the Xbox One?

360 only if on Gold. Gold games don't have same flexibility as some Game Pass ones do unfortunately.

OG Xbox and 360 Gold games are free forever to play, Gold sub or not.
Xbox One Gold games require active Gold sub to play

Honestly, I used to be like you guys as well, but in Game Pass' case, it's worked out way cheaper in the long run.

If you have only Gold, I'd say ditch that and go with Game Pass Ultimate as you'll get your online, but more importantly a smorgasbord of games you can try at will.

I went all digital at the end of the 360/PS3 era and never looked back (not owning games physically anymore is so nice lol but that's a different story). Now with this subscription model I can try games and ditch them if they aren't up to snuff. The biggest thing for me is I don't feel like I am "owed" the $70 worth of entertainment if I don't like a game I downloaded from Game Pass, where if I would have bought the $70 game (physically or digitally) I would have slogged through it to get my money's worth. Not to mention all the big first party games are Day 1. If Sony and Nintendo did the same I'd be signing up for theirs too lol.

Last game I bought full price on release was Red Dead Redemption 2.

    • Armello is a solid board game, fun enough just with bots.

Echo others above, Game Pass is the value here. Outriders is so good, and I wouldn't have bought it at any price - with Game Pass I just gave it a flyer and am so glad I did.

The problem is game pass ultimate is expensive. I know people getting deals now, but eventually its going to be $15-$20 a month to continue. Thats too much. Also, games come and go on game pass. You may like a game to find out its being taken off at end of the month. Also, i hardly ever buy games at full price i always play games (with the exception of the odd must play) 1-2 years behind and buy at $10-$30 sweet spot. So in essence, my strategy is cheaper than Xbox game pass. Not to mention i always have the option to sell the games as well

I hear what you're saying, no worries. Just different perspectives for sure.

Thankfully I won't have to worry about price until like late 2023 since doing the conversion "trick". Plus you can pay for Game Pass with Microsoft Rewards which is what I've been doing: stocking up on points/GCs/sub codes. Makes it free effectively.

Personally I'm most interested in the first party games anyways so you won't have to worry about those leaving the service at least.

But in your case...if you're buying games that late in the cycle then you're golden! Game Pass is really for people who 1) buy at retail on release and/or 2) just want a ton of pickup and play games.

Yeah I don't really think the price issue is a valid point. I've been using gamepass ultimate intermittently for about 2 years and never payed more than ~$10 a month for it. There's always some deal to be had whether its Pringles codes or the $1.50 7 day codes available right now or even just a regular old 33% off sale in a retail store. Any time I've needed to renew in the past 2 years I've been able to find some kind of a deal. Dealornodeal is probably right that these deals will dry up some day but at that point you can just let your subscription run out. But if worrying about having to pay $15-20 eventually is what's stopping you from getting gamepass that's just silly. Plus whenever you do find a good deal you can stock up 3 years at a time.

I have the same attitude of waiting for games and getting them cheap but I love gamepass for letting me try all kinds of different games that I probably would've just skipped over otherwise. Lots of indie games on there that don't get physical releases. If I really like a game and see a physical copy for a good deal I'll still grab it whether its on gamepass or not.
