Sony's PlayStation 5 (PS5) console is one of the most difficult products to find in Canada, reaching Bigfoot-levels of elusiveness at retailers across the country.

Over a year after its November 2020 launch, the PS5 is still one of the most sought-after products and has been sold out at every major retailer for extended periods of time in 2021-22. While the console has been re-stocked several times this past year, stock usually sells out within minutes whenever any retailer re-stocks.

Finding the PS5 takes a lot of persistence and a little luck, as retailers often drop stock at random times to avoid a deluge of traffic and deter third-party scalpers – here are the best stores to buy a PlayStation 5 in Canada in 2022.

The Best Stores

  • Best Buy – Best Buy has re-stocked PS5 consoles intermittently in 2021, often with in-store pickup orders only. Notice is sometimes (not always) provided through their gaming-focused Twitter account, @BBYC_Gamers
  • Costco – Costco re-stocks a PlayStation 5 Ratchet & Clank bundle approximately once per month. The bundle is available online only and a Costco membership is required to purchase
  • GameStop – GameStop (formerly EB Games) has re-stocked PS5 bundles frequently in 2021, often at 10:00 AM ET. Notice is provided through @GameStopCanada on Twitter with stock available for about 30 minutes
  • Walmart – Walmart re-stocks PS5 consoles at midnight ET approximately once per month. Notice is provided through @WalmartCAGaming on Twitter and the late-night drop means stock is usually available for upwards of an hour

The Other Stores

  • Air Miles – two PS5 bundles are available from Air Miles with infrequent re-stocks in 2021. The major caveat is that they're only available by redeeming up to 10,810 Dream Miles and cannot be purchased outright
  • Amazon.ca – Amazon.ca has re-stocked PS5 consoles several times in 2021, but stock typically sells out within seconds due to Amazon's susceptibility to "bots" (automated programs designed to purchase items instantly). Note that Amazon.ca lists overpriced third-party sellers on their generic PS5 product pages, so be sure to double-check the price and that the seller is Amazon.ca if you're lucky enough to find stock
  • London Drugs – London Drugs carried the PS5 at launch, but the console has been unavailable for most of 2021. However, London Drugs is a favourite for those in Western Canada, as their pacific time operating schedule means fewer people in Ontario are up during midnight drops
  • Real Canadian Superstore – a PS5 bundle with an extra controller has been occasionally re-stocked at Real Canadian Superstore in 2021. The bundle is available online only and worth checking from time-to-time, since not many people know about Real Canadian Superstore's online shop
  • Shoppers Drug Mart – PS5 consoles have not been available online since launch, but some lucky customers have spotted consoles in-stores at various times in 2021
  • Staples – Staples held a one-day purchase lottery for the PS5 at launch and the console has not been re-stocked since. However, a PS5 product page exists and PS5 accessories are available online, which may indicate availability in the future
  • The Source – The Source has re-stocked the PS5 just once in 2021, at the start of the year in January. The shopping experience was a catastrophe, but it's likely they'll have stock before the holidays (maybe)
  • Toys R Us – Toys R Us carried the PS5 at launch, but the console has not been re-stocked since. PS5 accessories are available online, but it's unknown if the actual console will be re-stocked this year

Originally launched in November 2020, the PlayStation 5 is Sony's successor to the PlayStation 4 and one of the most sought-after products in 2020-2021, capable of playing next-generation games at up to 4K, ray-tracing, SSD storage and backwards compatibility with most PS4 games.

The PS5 comes two variants – a Standard Edition with a built-in Blu-ray drive for $629.99 and a Digital Edition without a Blu-ray drive for $499.99.

    • Gone lol. Now I need to enable push notifications for RFD! Appreciate you posting the thread though.
Lol yeah - they *did* last longer (that thread was posted around 3, when I shared it around 5 there was still stock) but we're not yet at the point where drops are lasting multiple days. You can try lbabinz' discord too if you want, but you need to have an existing mature (ie not created in the last week or two) Discord account to get in: https://discord.com/invite/Y9ptq5pZDG

This is the closest thing we have to one, really.

That's terrible! I'm glad I got one back in January.

    • Brilliant, thanks! Discord should do the trick.
Shoppers Drug Mart often gets them back in stock at physical locations without any announcements, either, so it never hurts to regularly check there too.
Went into my local SDM which is under renovation and yet, the PS5s are back in. Time to use up some points if you have them. Go go go...

    • Discord worked for me but I think it was mainly because it was the costco bundle. It took a few weeks but one day I noticed there was more notifications than most days so I just kept a close eye and made sure was logged in to Costco and eventually was able to grab one. I still keep an eye on the discord but it's pretty random, so just get lucky.

Keep an eye on hot deals. There's been a bunch relatively recently. Only bundles for the most part, though.

    • If you’re in BC, check your local Best Buy. Not sure if every store did, but most should have received inventory yesterday/today but it’s being sold in store only, unadvertised.

    • This discord group never worked for me and I have been on it for a few months. I get notified of the PS5/RTX 3060 Ti drop, click the link immediately (within a minute of the actual post) and it's already sold out. There are bots in that group that just buy everything up.

      I have been looking for a PS5 and a RTX 3060 Ti.

Thankfully I got the 3060 Ti by using the Bestbuy blog and lucked out by dropping in the store at noon.
How much did you end up paying for the 3060Ti?

Have discord on your phone, have accounts with the big retailers (Walmart, Costco, Bestbuy, Gamestop etc.) and credit card details saved at each. Sign up for playstation alerts in the discord and wait for them let you know when PS5 is available. They can go very fast.

    • I didn't sign up for any notifications. I just randomly call stores if I'm nearby. I don't want to support resellers. I have not been successful but I haven't tried really hard either.

    • It's almost Xmas, still tons of Ads for the ps5 on kijiji and Facebook.
I think supply met demand after this holiday.
Possibly, although it's not as though every one that wants one gets one for Christmas. People will still be hunting afterwards with the Christmas cash they get

    • Are retailers going to have consoles for Boxing Day in store shopping? Miss the good ol days of lining up.
Feels like Boxing Day has been dead for the last few years. It’s been replaced by Black Friday sales. Even Black Friday sales have been lacking. All conventional sales seem so insignificant when you’re on RFD.

Also, there is a 0% chance retailers will have PS5’s in store for Boxing Day.

    • So just going through the last few posts..

If someone was a complete noob and wanted to be the dad hero….

What would someone recommend to get the process rolling of getting a PS5?

Find a good website that emails out the drops and sit back? If that’s the case, which site or sites are proven winners?

      Thanks,

    • I'm just trying to understand the seemingly-mutually-exclusive claims of "they're really easy to get" and "the only place to get one if you want it before XMas is from a scalper". I don't understand why an scalper (who is, by definition, an asshole that is hoarding stock and helping create false scarcity, driving up prices) would bother giving up a console at retail price when they can just return it and get the exact same amount of money without the risk of getting robbed in a parking lot. Are they just gonna do it out of the goodness of their little black hearts? I'd be hella suspicious about anybody asking me to meet them somewhere with several hundred dollars on me, for them to make $0 profit on the transaction.
They're "easy" to get if you know where to look. Not everyone has the time, ability, knowledge or care to do this though.

    • They are easy to get. There's about 20 listings of these I can get for retail right now on FB or kijiji. Not everyone selling it on FB or Kijiji is a "scalper." There's a lot of people who bought into the hype and were able to get a few of them but now they can't sell it. If you look on kijiji and FB right now, there's a lot of them going for retail. Those noobs or wannabe scalpers are happy with their Credit card points / cashback and don't have to return the console to the store.

People who are smart will meet at the police station or somewhere public like a food court. Also, we're able to verify the seller by their kijiji or FB history.

      If you know, you know.
I bought a disk and digital version and decided to keep the disk and sold my digital bundle at cost.

I see your point. Getting robbed? Where do you live? Pay with e-transfer. The fact is that NO ONE is going to return a PS5 to the store if they are scalpers. Let's say they had a few made 100 on each and then sell one for cost. Also, if they collect points or whatever, they will make cash off that.

If they buy from Costco, the bundles, are 885 taxes in, they have an exec membership, they will earn money towards that, then they can earn points on thier CC purchase or cash back and if they do this 5 times or whatever, they are making money.

If they buy from gamestop, sell at cost or a little over, they earn points towards edge points, etc.

Scalpers want the quick sale, they rarely hold onto things and want to get rid of it.

Again, just my point. If I was a scalper, this is what I would do. Sell, them for like 50 more if I could and collect all the cashback and points off my memberships and CC's.

At this time, even selling 50.00 more will be hard as there are so many.
