View allThe two things that actually bother me a lot about it is that you have to use a single joycon as a controller, you can't use third party controllers, and you can't use two. You can't even use the Switch official controllers to play. Pure cash grab. And secondly, you can't skip ahead text or animations or anything, which wouldn't be a problem if everything in the game didn't take so long.
Oh yeah, a lot of the mini-games suck as well. A lot of them felt like they just wanted to get the game shipped and they're something insanely mundane (count this, press A, do something that doesn't feel like a game whatsoever), and some of them are purely random chance, like one where you bet on a race, that's completely random every time.
I much prefer Mario kart, Mario 3D world and smash for local multiplayer.
* Sets of two Joy-Cons can be had on Amazon Warehouse for $60. That's only $30 per player, so much cheaper than other systems.
* Personally I actually like dual Joy-Cons over the Pro controller for particular games. I'm glad I had 8 of them when I played Mario Tennis Aces doubles (another criminally underrated party game). I know people say that you'll get extra Joy-Cons for just this game, but it uses them well and there are other uses for extra Joy-Cons. They're good for all party games, a set of 4 is great if you're playing any of the game show or board game titles too with friends.
* The Switch Lite in general is kind of a non-starter for games like this. The screen is way too small for anything other than single-player titles, so I wouldn't really count that against the game.
I think SMP gets a bad rap but I had an amazing time with it and still play it from time to time. I would recommend it in a heartbeat to anyone looking for a fun party game or to play with their family or kids. My only complaints really concern lack of content, no DLC when it sold so well, and lack of proper online multiplayer with friends. I expect SMP2 to correct most of those.
Too bad there are only 4 different boards in this version. However, there is a typical "you are on your own" and co-op x 4 boards, which makes 8 slightly different game playing boards.

Mario Party 8, 9 & 10 are the worst in the series.
If you bought a Nintendo Switch Lite, the game is not playable and you would have to buy
two sets of Joycons because the Nintendo Switch Lite does not have detachable controllers.
Online Play is limited to online mini-game marathon mode. Where you just jump between minigames.
Super Mario Party's main mode is local multiplayer only or you could play single player against computer controlled characters but
then it lacks the suspense and spontaneous action of playing against actual people.
.
Light on content and zero after release support and updates, but still totally worth it. I think they struck a great balance with the gameplay and MiniGames between pick up and play and hardcore mario party fans. The sales speak for themselves too.
The only let down IMO was the fact that there are too few boards. It just needed more content. But what’s there is really fun.
Shoppers gonna have 3 games for this price
Super Mario Party, Luigi Mansion and one more
Hopefully there will be points promotion
For 4 player couch co op fun look at "Death Squared". A fraction of the cost and way more enjoyable.
EDIT: it looks like a few of the games are the same price as their public sale.
Just for reference:
Joy cons $79.99 (reg $100)
Switch Pro Controller $70.19 (reg $90)
Switch games for $51.99 (reg $80)
* Splatoon 2

There's only 4 main party boards, and they're all relatively small; to compensate, regular dice only go from 1-6 now (instead of 1-10), though you can also get allies (other playable characters that haven't been selected that session) which add to your rolls, except you can only gain them from Ally spaces, items, or as rewards (which are all potentially random, so there aren't any guarantees). Besides the regular dice, all the characters have their own personalized dice now (e.g. Shy Guy has a die that only has 4's and a single 0, DK has a die with +5 coins, 0, 0, 0, 10, 10), and you can use any Ally's dice as well.
There's also a cooperative river rafting game mode where you'll steer a raft with up to 4 people with motion controls and some decently fun coop minigames. Besides that there's a partner board mode (with teams of 2), and rather than defined paths like in party mode, there's grid-based movement. There's still only 4 boards in that game mode as well.
The biggest letdown is probably the lack of online board play: you can only play minigames.
Another thing to note is that you can only use half-joycons with the game and you can't use the pro controller or a pair of joycons.
Even at $50 I would not buy this game. Nintendo can do so much better when it comes to this series. The only part of this one which was 'super' was the let down.
