Turns out the seed mixes were "fine" (non-native for some areas, but not invasive). That "common" plant names mean different things in the seed business versus the invasive plant world. And that General Mills could have avoided all this with better packaging and information. Guess they tried to save themselves some trouble this year and changed the giveaway to sunflower seeds, which aren't as helpful to pollinators since they bloom only one time in the season.
I just came back from Seedy Sunday in Edmonton and there is a substantial seed swap table. I assume other Seedy Saturdays/Sundays would too. Donated a bunch of seed and picked up quite a bit, too.
Going to do the back yard this year. The coreopsis really like the soil here and are easily transplanted.
And no one wanted to take it off my hands ... after few asks, I basically stopped asking
