View allMy conclusion so far is that 180 on the knife does not mean factory second and we are reading too much into code on the knife....
Both have 38401-180 etched onto the blade. However, the packaging for the $40 one is quite different (it's a paper box whereas the $56 one was the clear plastic packaging that I'm more used to seeing).
Where they differ even more is that the $56 one says 38401-181 on the box (despite what the knife says) and the $40 one says 38401-182 on the box. Seems like the 182 is a US code? I'm guessing they're country codes of the same knife. In any case, they're both etched with 180 on the knife.
I apologize for being pedantic, I'm pointing at what I'm seeing, asking questions, and letting others draw their own conclusion.
Maybe factory seconds is the wrong terminology, I apologize for using that wording. It was misleading of me.
I don't claim to know anything, just finding and showing what I've found.
I appreciate you as an individual and I thank you for this engaging exchange, but I need to point out that you accidentally linked to item # 38401-181.
Here is the link to 38401-180: https://www.zwilling.com/ca/zwilling-pr ... 180-5.html
I hope I have not ruined your weekend and I hope for all the best for you and your family.
Again, i dont care if its a factory second(Its gonna be mauled by a cheap sharpening stone in 6-8 months regardless), but whatever reasoning you've used to come to that conclusion with these ones is wrong. If that serial number designated it as defective, other stores would have to mention it. They dont. Also, the process most likely of screwing it up(sharpening) happens after its etched so theres no way they would use that system for noting what is/isnt a rejected one. And before i pointed out the 180 signified the length, you had convinced a bunch of people here that was the big smoking gun.
These are not factory seconds.
Also, I'm not finicky about my knifes, when this needs to be sharpened it'll hit the same whetstone my other knives use, which is a toolgrade 400grit stone that i know messes up the "perfect" angles and geometry of the blade. So i really dont care if theres minor cosmetic junk wrong with the blade. I'm just doubtful, in a practical sense, of what you're saying.
It's a deal from the point of view that it's cheaper than buying from Zwilling directly, but they absolutely sell factory seconds.
All that matters is that you're happy with it.
Check out Zwilling's own site:
I bought a whetstone to try and sharpen manually, like the pros do it. Took me 1.5 hours for the first attempt on a cheap knife yesterday. The results were not so good, looks simple on youtube, but in reality to get that edge consistently sharpened at the proper angle wasn't easy. I will keep trying and hopefully i can get somewhere with more practice.
