I guess I'll have to keep the receipt to remember which vouchers still have outstanding amount in it.
Cash flight was around $500.
When they add LCBO eVoucher, I was happy for a min , that I can start unloading my AM and get myself some drinks.
But it is just so trouble to use for 1 barcode per $10, each one need to scan and enter PIN.
Otherwise, i can get a $400 voucher and get myself some nice whisky
*envy*
Agree, wish they could do larger denominations like $50 or $100 bar codes at once instead of multiple $10 ones.
AFAIK, you cannot redeem AMs at Shell for GCs just like most retailers. Redeeming for GCs is a no no in Canada.
I redeem for $100 eVoucher, thinking it is like a gift card. Wrong. I am so wrong.
At the end, I got 10 x $100 eVoucher. It is not something available on Mobile app, so i have to print them out.
When print it out, they are setup to print 1 Voucher per page, with another page for T&C, so end up paging 20 pages.
when use them, LCBO have to scan the bar code and enter the PIN number one by one. BUT since it is one BIG barcode per page, it doesn't scan, and the cashier have to enter each , one by one.
This is just so stupid. Why can't they just make 1 bar code for whatever the amount is.
I wonder can I redeem AM at Shell to get like $100 LCBO gift card, it will be much easier.
To your point: Of course it can't be a direct comparison without any caveats whatsoever, but neither can any comparison between cash miles and reward miles as they are different beasts. You mentioned BAMs, for instance, which aren't always available, and as others have mentioned, also may force you to shop somewhere more expensive than you otherwise would (metro, rexall).
Regardless of the fine points, it's obviously helpful to consider which is the most cash effective use of your miles. In my case, I churn credit cards, and get the first year annual fee waived every year on the bmo elite, so there is $0 extra cost. My $1,200 flights cost me precisely 5000 a.m. which is good value.
Everybody has different circumstances - all I wanted to get across is that reward miles *can* be better value.
That said, this thread is about free booze... so let's leave our discussion at that, and head over to the LCBO for some Lagavulin scotch!!!
Anyway I was just pointing out that you cannot compare the value of dream miles while using a one time bonus offer from a yearly fee credit card to the everyday value of cash miles, it doesn't represent a fair comparison.
The 5,000 *includes* the 2500 a.m. for taxes. The flights were 2500.
When I tried to book commercially with those great flight times/dates, the cheapest I could find was $1,200 total. Instead, I used 5000 air miles. That means a value of 2.4:1 as reward miles.
The $526 is 5,000 cash miles at 95 a.m. = $10.
And yes, I also take advantage of all the mega miles offers as well as bonuses... but it's not like you can do that over and over again to use up every single mile you have.
I'm just saying you *can* find great value in rewards miles under the right circumstances
You can't beat that even if you had a stick...
Btw 5000 for 2 flights+2500tax= 7500am≠526CAD not sure how you're calculating cash value here unless
Using my free companion flight bonus from Amex (via the Air Miles Reserve Card...also available with the BMO Air Miles World Elite), I just redeemed 5,000 miles for 2 round-trip flights from Sudbury to Halifax in June.
The flight times are great and the taxes are also included (I paid an extra ~2500 miles for the taxes).
Those miles are worth ~ $526 in cash. The flights would have cost about twice that.
Obviously not everybody flies, but for those who do, there are effective ways to make your Dream Miles far more valuable than Cash Miles.
Otherwise, yes - you can get beer and wine at various retailers, but that's not liquor - liquor generally means spirits - i.e. rum, tequilla, whiskey, etc...
1. Using air miles cash at Rexall is a bit low in "bang-for-your-buck" much of the time (cheaper pharmacy items elsewhere *most* of the time..though they often have some decent sales and YMMV clearance sales...not to mention good Bonus Air Miles deals)
2. Same with groceries at Metro - many of us RFD'ers prefer cheaper supermarkets
3. If you have a car, Shell was always a great way to use your miles, as most gas stations are priced equally with local competitors..but for those without cars who like to drink, I'd call this the best place to shop, as you can't get liquor anywhere eles!
My two cents
