Picked up an OptiPlex 3020 a few weeks ago to replace my parents’ finally-dead e6750 castoff that I built almost 10 years ago. I think the OCZ Vertex 3 finally lived up to OCZ’s poor rep and fried its MBR.
The refurbished Dell arrived in less than a week in excellent condition. Well-protected during shipping. I polled the SMART data on the drive and found it had 8400 hours or so; otherwise, I’d have sworn it was new. Build date said 2014. No dust or any marks on the case. Came with a new keyboard and new mouse (no shiny spots). These are institutional lease returns, so odds are most have barely seen any use.
Put in an extra stick of RAM ($35 on Amazon) and a Samsung SSD. Almost completely toolless inside, so I spent perhaps 5 minutes in total doing the hardware upgrade. Put Win7 on because that’s what they’re used to. Boots from cold in literally 8 seconds and will serve them well for many years. Dead silent and a 1/3 of the size of my old midtower. PSU is 80+ Gold.

Thought about getting the cheaper Optiplex with the i5-4590 and 4GB for around $240, but I am not sure how Windows 10 will run with 4GB for him.
About to pull the trigger.
