View allI installed LauncherHijack v2.1 because v3.0 didn't work well with the Fire HD 8 (2018 version) but I see now there is v4.0.2 that mentioned it works with the new models.
Or are you guys simply throwing android on it?
Other than that the 2018 is 0.5mm (0.4") thicker and about 22g (0.8oz) heavier.
Would it be safe to get the 2017 version?
Thanks!
Works well.
I may try again or simply give up. I have a GH speaker in pretty much every room anyway.
For a short time older versions of Android (like 4.4) weren't getting Kasa app updates, but they seem to have resumed.
Are you sure the TP-Link devices are on the same network as your tablet?
Maybe you should just start over completely, reset the devices, re-install the Kasa app etc.
If it works for you, and the battery still holds a decent charge, no need to replace it.
I'm thinking of either resetting the Fire to start again from scratch or just return it to Amazon.
Pleasantly surprised at ease of use... Already have household full of fire tv's. Very familar with fire os and amazon apps... This turned on and already registered to my account.. Setup in seconds. Installed netflix and proceeded to download 4 or five episodes for in car use. Worked like a charm. Toddler in crib for a nap, i decided to try it out. Surprisingly useable, tried a few of the basic games like crossy road and hingry shark. Tried amazon prime video, installed. Spotify. Speakers sound surprisngly decent lol. Dismay is a lot dimmer and no contest to the oled in the s2. But my 13 month old wont know the difference lol.
Great buy, very useable for its base functions. And def a great buy for kids.
For 79 bux cant go wrong really. Not going to bother to sideload or google play store... Its primary a netflix device for car or if we go our to eat

So I setup my wemo switches in Alexa and they worked. There was a Wemo for Fire HD app in the Amazon App store
Then I wanted to setup my TP link switches and plugs through Kasa. So I searched fro Kasa in the Amazon app store but couldn't find it.
So I thought - No problem. I setup Google Play and then installed Kasa from there instead. Kasa from Google Play loads properly and controls my switches and plugs properly. The only thing is Alexa isn't able to discover the devices. Also, now with Kasa installed, my Wemo switches don't respond to Alexa anymore. Discovery doesn't work anymore either.
Can anyone suggest what I might be missing?
With it's incredible battery life, it can play video for about 8-10 hours at almost max brightness
Waiting on a 10 inch version for the next buy. The 8 is good but eyes getting weaker with age.
My kids beat the hell out the hd tablets, bought it a couple years ago, still going strong, good battery still. no complaints.
PROS
-Cheap, unbeatable value
-Dual loud speakers
-2.4/5 GHz dual-band Wi-Fi
-SD memory expansion
-built-in Alexa (may drain battery faster)
-kids mode to restrict time and apps
-looks durable (for kids)
CONS
-basic performance, lags/stutters with multiple open apps, struggles in mid/high intensive games (de-bloating and system tweaks will help)
-average, not-as-bright, reflective ~720p screen
-bloated, home screen/launcher loaded with Amazon content (perfect for Amazon Prime members; )
-ads for Amazon products on lockscreen (some may like it)
-average basic cameras, no flash
-need to sideload Google apps or services (requires tech knowledge of tinkering with Android; wives/grandmas will need help)
-YouTube app not supported (alternatives available)
-average battery life
-feels bit chunky and heavy
I'm hoping they bring the 10" version here soon, I'd be up for buying that.
Having said that, I still bought the HD 8 during Prime Days, sideloaded Google Play store, and my wife is happy with it for light usage.
You will also need to install Launcher Hijacker to prevent the Home button from defaulting back to the Fire Launcher. You may need to Install version 2 instead of version 3 if the latest version seems to crash.
There are also some workarounds to disable bloatware on the old version which most likely won't work with the new one.
