View allI’m in Ottawa. I’m going full Alexa. Rawr.
Easy sell for the wife.

also anyone able to set up custom alarm and timer sounds or it only allows default sounds
i think i was able to add a 3rd party alarm clock app/sound to it but it eventually resetted to default sounds and i don't know how to get it back lol
thx
From the moment I get home "Hey Google, lights on", and "Hey Google set the thermostat to 21 degrees", very useful when hands are full.
Then when the kids want to watch something (and I'm cooking) "Hey Google, play Paw Patrol in the family room"
While cooking "Hey Google, set a timer for 10 minutes", "Hey Google, add breadcrumbs to my shopping list", "Hey Google, play some Matthew Good"
While watching TV last night "Hey Google, how old is Mayim Bialik"
Getting ready for bed "Hey Google, remind me when I get to work to send that letter"
And finally "Hey Google, lights off"
All things I could have done other ways, all things that I don't NEED, but all things that make stuff just slightly easier. It's a fantastic tool, you just have to discover how it can help you.
FWIW, $79 is fairly steep (I swear they were $69 regular price before, or am I thinking of the US price?), $50/each is a decent deal. I have 3 of them (all bought Black Friday) and would get more if that price came back.
Total after tax was just over $120 since I used my last :-( $5 Reward Zone coupon.
You can create a group of devices to cast all rooms and I wish I had some more to be able to hear music in almost all rooms, in sync.
My mom has an iphone though - how well does this work with the iOS phones when you want to sort of create/tie/retrieve things? She does use gmail, but also does not (currently?) have any form of music subscription and it wouldn't be worth for her
I have it paired with smart switches so I turn lights on/off
I also pair with my tv to turn it on/off.
None of this is necessary but for $30 (at the time) its worth it even as a speaker.
I bought a bunch of Echo Buttons when I was in the US and its super fun to create trivia games, etc and play along.
It's super helpful in the morning...since it does voice recognition...it can differentiate my wife's voice and mine.
I ask it "Hey Google, tell me about my day". Starts with weather, then tells me my appointments (linked work email)...then sports news all while I shower/get ready.
My wife does the same.
The other neat feature is sending recipes to it to have it read aloud the ingredients/directions.
Of course, I use it for home automation too (lights, locks, etc)...however I find my Echo's work better.
It is also super easy to cast music to my vizio sound system via this.
Well, we use it to play music, turn on and off lights, make shopping list, ask route direction, ask for words translation, ask silly questions for fun, kitchen timers, broadcast message on every floor
I was lucky enough to get two for $80 in a previous sale, and extremely lucky to get one during BBs price error, but if I was lucky for another one I wouldn't expect it to go much lower than this price.
As for usability, I use mine fairly often, I own both an Alexa and a Home, and both have their perks, but the Home is my preferred unit, especially for music. I bought one of my units for my parents and they use it so much more than I do. My mom's is in the kitchen and she is frequently asking it questions, or telling it to play a song. Its good for recipe conversions and the like.
My dad has one in the garage now that they purchased after the first, and they use them to communicate with each other using the broadcast feature.
If your parents are in their 50+s I would highly recommend this as a mother's/father's day present.
