Have this up and running for about 3 weeks now with no issues with 2.4 at all. I'm on the latest merlin firmware. Have about 10 devices on 2.4, but on a limited guest network.

    • Have 2 of them in mesh for over 6 months, on latest Asus firmware, never had an issue with them..just excellent routers to date, have them scheduled to reboot once a week not exactly why, read somewhere it helps with uptime

What's issue are there with the 2.4GHz side of this router?
I've been using this router over the past year and the largest install has 7 AIMESH configured routers with 2 RT-AC86U's in the mix with somwhere between 55-70 devices online at any given time.

Other than the Rogers gigabit modem having to be replaced twice, I've had no issues at all.

I’ve been using this and an AC1900P in AiMesh since some time last year and have been very happy. I have never had an issue with 2.4Ghz but had to turn off scheduled reboot many months ago as I did find that for whatever reason I did have connection issues after a scheduled reboot.

Great router and I with definitely recommend it to others.

EDIT: Also, does scheduled reboot reboot all AiMesh devices or just the primary? I feel at the time last year it seemed to me that only the primary device rebooted and not nodes.

    • best range I've had using this router, made my wife happy, well worth it...
No issues with 2.4GHz here with around 30 wifi devices half of on 2.4

    • Had mine for about a month. I set it as primary and an AC87u as the AP in the basement (replaced an older AC66u). Both run on Merlin's latest software and some tweaking based on reads from Small Net Builder forums. Range has been significantly improved. My goal was to get coverage in the garage, which was always poor and often dropped. No issues now, great coverage and wifi tests are great. Generally running 20-30 devices.
Would have been great to try imesh, but the 87u isn't supported. AP is working excellently anyways.
I did have one wifi dropout the first week. 5G might have been out too, but I didn't check. I followed some instructions I found on SNB and turned the on/off radio switch on the left side back of the router off and then on. Problem solved, no problems since.
Have to say that for the money spent this was an excellent upgrade.

    • I've had this router up and running for a week from last sale. On 5th day. My 5g dropped. Even though 5g band was visible, All devices dropped from 4y and could not reconnect. 2g was fine. Needed to reboot router. I think another user had same issue.

I've read about the 2g issues as well.

How ever performance wise, this is a beast and crazy improvement over my old Ac1900p In terms of both range and speed.

    • I have had this running for ~2 weeks too and pretty happy so far.

Was coming from AC68U (AC1900P). Tried a bunch of combinations to get better coverage (AiMesh with another AC68U or AC66U B1, using them in repeater mode, using an extender). This is the first combination that has actually worked reliably for me (AC86U as main, AC1900P as AiMesh Node). I still find AiMesh to not be perfectly stable, however the AC86U has enough range/performance that even if the node drops out, wifi performance remains acceptable throughout the house.

    • Missed out on the last sale and bought a more high end Asus router that was also on sale. Maybe I'll grab this one and use it as a satellite in a mesh setup to fortify my household.

    • I bought this a month ago, solid router but I noticed drops on 2.4 after 3 weeks and I am using the latest Merlin image. That said, the drops have stopped so I am not sure what was happening. I also bought the A66U-B2 and flashed it with Merlin which makes is an A86U to try an Aimesh with this router. The performance and coverage were horrible, I would say it dropped by more than 50% all around. I ended up removing the A66U and kept the A86U to maintain the good performance, would never try Aimesh again especially that the routers were facing each other without any obstacles and they were 10-13ft apart.

That's way too close for an AIMesh, probably contributes to problems.

      Our AIMesh is beautiful.

    • Would I notice a big improvement over my Archer C7? Currently using my neighbour's internet connection as I wait for some of this COVID drama to settle down (installs seem to be on hold for most ISP's), so ASUS's repeated mode sounds really appealing to simplify things.

    • I bought this last week to replace my old and bad Netgear R7000 running in AI MESH.

So i have two 86u, running on Bell FIbe Gigabit PPPOE passthorugh, running at over 900M download. Completely solid, with over 91 clients signed in (about 10-15 is hard wired) but mostly ipads, phones, laptops, and tons of smart home switches etc.

Completely solid!! 2.4G no issues.. I am running latest MERLIN as well.

      at $180 is a buy.

      Sensible.

      Mensch.

AIMesh works well at a reasonable distance. If they're within atomic nuclei distances, expect problems.

Running two rock solid 86Us in AIMesh with zero issues in our satellite (location).
