View allSo really only option is to use an external USB 3.0 videocard/adapter.
That's what I originally thought, so I downloaded all of the drivers onto a usb stick before I did the fresh start.
Surprisingly though, after the fresh start was completed all of the drivers were up to date. I didn't need to re-install them. I checked all of them in the device manager. Just to be safe though I reinstalled the Intel UHD 620 driver and the realtek wireless lan drivers but they didn't change anything.
The other thing, I just bought a USB-C to HDMI cable and have not been able to get the usb-c to show video... . Anyone else try?
I really like to use my 14" + 24" + 27" all together! lol
I don't use the right ctrl key very much, if at all, and if everything else is positioned in a standard English format, then I'd like to take a look at it. Unfortunately, we've moved and there are no BBs close (there was a FS but it closed down) so going to a store just to look at a KB (especially since the deal seems to be long over) just isn't in the cards. If anyone has a pic, I'd appreciate it.
The only image on the BB site is the US English one so that's less than useless when it comes to their Canadian models.

It is the same laptop, but with 1 TB HDD rather than 256 SSD. Also, it is on sale for 699$ with 50$ off with code BMSMPC50.
You can add the NVMe easily, with an extra 100$, and have two drives in it, one for windows and one for storage.
I have just typed as I normally would and have found no issues with any mis-key-strokes and infact didn't even realize it was bilingual.
I concur with someone else in this thread saying that the HP version of the Bilingual keyboard is really nice.
If you don't believe it, just go into a store and look. Seems like all this back-n-forth on this topic is fruitless.
If you don't want it, don't get it.
Cheers!
I've never seen that in my life and there are always shrunken, moved or split keys on a French Canadian keyboard that cause me massive headaches for touch-typing.
sometimes you can find those higher capacity ones (7800mAh vs 5200mAh) which is also an option
However, I think for 80-90% of the use cases (mostly tethered to a wall outlet for grandparents PC), a 4th+ gen i3/i5 is more than enough processing power for office productivity/general usage (email, youtube, RFD, etc...). Especially with an SSD upgrade. I know we're comparing a Fiat with a Ferrari here, just an option to consider though. If you're in need of serious power for deep learning, there's always AWS
I will investigate 8th gen processors though. Thanks for the headsup.
Look up the 8th gen processors... they have made a HUGE leap in both these avenues.
The new processors last about 8-11 hours of actual usage on a 41kwh battery. That is crazy! My laptop has a smaller battery than my cell phone and it lasts me 2-3 days on a single charge with hours of day of usage after work.
The i5 8th gen processor had a HUGE beef up. Its now a true 4 core processor not a 2 core. The i7 is a 6 core with hyperthreading. These are not features to overlook.
Also to add the smaller yet longer running battery means my laptop weight literally almost nothing compared to my work laptop with a 99kwh battery with an i7 4th gen processor.
I also was looking at used laptops and really $699+tax vs paying $500ish for a semi-decent laptop in my mind was very justified. Albeit I am not a student, have a job and can afford the extra $300 bucks.
If you want cheap cheap, this is the wrong thread.
If you want best bang for your buck... your in the right place but if your bang for the buck has a cap... then go refurb.
1) There is a useless key \| beside my right alt key.
2) I do lots of development work and use VIrtualbox so figured, why not use that key as the default Virtualbox host key which is set to Right-Crtl.
I also tried using solely the US keyboard but found my keys got all messed up. So right now its set to English (Canada) with a US keyboard within its options.
As for Keytweak, I was looking at SharpKeys but having multiple options is always a good thing. I will try them both out.
I tried messing around with different keyboards and regardless was not able to remap it. I am curious how you faired.
Also found similar kits on ebay.
I annotated in the picture where I think it would go.
Are you impressed with its performance so far?
I ordered this laptop on Friday, August 17, 2018 through Best Buy since they had it on for $699 and I missed out on the deal from HP directly.
It's still on sale on Best Buy and it says that they have the laptop in stock.
This morning, I checked my order status and it still says "In Progress".
I called Best Buy and they told me it looks like the HP 14-cf0018ca is currently on back order and that is why it hasn't shipped yet. I asked her why the website still says its in stock when in fact they are on back order and she didn't seem to have an answer. I was offered a 10% discount since I won't receive the laptop by the estimated delivery date, however the rep from Best Buy told me that if the laptop is still on back order 7 days after the expected delivery date then my order will be automatically cancelled. I'm a little unhappy because I really wanted this laptop. Hopefully they get more stock...
They then proceeded to tell me to look on Amazon/BestBuy for the part as they can not find a source..... I said, "Well if you don't have the part or can not find the part numbers how will those other venders know?".
So it seems confirmed, no secondary drive capability for this laptop as the sata cable does not seem source-able.
@gadling were you able to find a source for the sata cable? If just that is source-able you can work without the caddy (Velcro mounts) and the rubber feet you can just glue on with some sticky but not so permanent glue.
If you do find a way to get the secondary hard drive working, let me know. I don't want to open up this laptop again unless there is 100% confirmation that it will work. I believe I've done my part with the RAM.
Here is the picture:
Most of us have had positive or negative experiences with certain brands (unfortunately I had a number of issues with HP laptops over the years (desktops, no problem). I would expect breakage rates to be lower on Apple because they don't build entry level laptops/netbooks (aka HP, Asus, Acer, etc). Surprising to me was the poor performance of MS ($'s spent didn't equal reliability). The survey does suggest (by the numbers) Dell would be on the lower end of reliability because they don't really build entry level laptops/netbooks. If you consider the number of sub $600 models, Acer & HP build, this probably suggests mid-to-upper range models could be equally or outperforming the group average.

Any issues putting the rubber feet back on?
I had put this one in and works great! https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01BIW ... UTF8&psc=1
I am going to close up the laptop tonight and call it. From what I gather the cable and HDD bay is not source-able so if you want more HD space you either get an external drive or upgrade your M.2 SSD to a larger one (I'm going to personally go with the external drive option).
The pics I took seem useless now with that PDF document you linked to as the models are all mocked up in it.
I do have a couple of pics but really doesn't show anything more than the "real-life" look of whats in the PDF document.
So net-net, I got my HP 14" for $706+tax for a 16GB Ram laptop. (I explained early how I got this pricing so don't ask rather read my previous posts).
I challenge anyone to show me a 16GB + 256 M.2 SSD laptop for this price point! With an IPS panel!
Now all I need to find is a good USB multiport dongle to connect to 2 displays.
Honestly, for most needs out there, a chromebook is fine and offers tremendously better real-world battery life. If you need to connect to remote desktops or need to run office, then something like this does work but frankly all you need is an SSD and any CPUs from the last 5 years and you're good. This is overkill for most uses.
So if you want a Lenovo AMD Ryzen laptop then get the ThinkPad E485 starting at $714 regular price. 15% off with THINKSAV15 coupon code, and then 5% with Ebates, so 19% off is great. Ebates last week was 12% for Lenovo purchases so maybe wait for it to go back up.
The E485 with FHD screen and 8 GB RAM is $700.40 (15% off the $824), then you’ll get back 5% with Ebates. So you’re looking at $751.45 all in, which is after taxes minus the cash back.
I got one and threw in a WD Black PCIe NVMe 500 GB SSD and it works really well. I know the E series is Lenovo’s “budget” ThinkPad, but the build quality should be either the same or better than HP.
Oh and it comes with a US English only keyboard
I type in English, hence the need for an English Keyboard.
