My 2 cents: Apple has successfully used their 'refurbished' branding to sell at sale prices, move older inventory, etc. The bulk are likely new. With xmas around the corner, and their stock huffing air, and their market saturated, they can't afford to turn down anyone who doesn't want to shell out for a 16GB at $188+ or more for a 5th gen. A refurbed 4th Gen fits well with pulling all inventory from stores and still selling to buyers who won't pay more.
Don't worry about the colour if it's a gift. They won't care, and if it's for a child, you will probably have a broken screen in a few months and can change it then.
Can anybody change it to white?
I've been watching this for a few days. Checked just before i left the house a couple hours ago, to go to the bank and put money on my card so that the funds are instantly available. Got back home, straight to the PC....."sold out".
Bummer. Oh well.
As for the product itself? Let's face it, at the end of the day, all followers are a result of apple's outstanding marketing abilities. I personally wouldn't even consider one, but the kids are always going on about it, and mom isn't helping. So now we're buying.......brand new now. lol
I give it until New Years before they are absolutely fed up with iTunes. lol.
I have bought a classic ipod, ipod touch, macbook air, several apple TVs and now this deal another ipod touch, they are virtually brand new ....
They also come with a 1 year warranty which is pretty good for a refurb. I've purchased several Apple refurbs and never had a problem with any of them.

Anyway I bought 2 for my daughters... Worth it just to keep them away from my iphone5! I went with 32gb. Way cheaper than the new generation.
I bought this last year at a much greater price. The player itself is great, Sandisk had the right idea, incorporating touch feedback and decent sized screen. However, the touch screen on this is very finicky. It doesn't respond accurately to touch, it tends to move by itself if there is slight contact on the screen - so for example keeping it in the pocket (especially pants) will dislodge the settings to something entirely different (of course you can lock it, but that's an inconvenience when you are not looking to lock).
I have previous generations as well, I liked those better. With this model, Sandisk was likely trying to gain share in the developing touch interfaced players. This was their first attempt, hopefully they will improve.
Bottomline: It's a great buy at this price (and was a good enough buy last year as well at about 120-130).
And, of course, it doesn't compare to the ipod which has great touch interface (I own both).
