    • I finally got a chance to check out the new M2 Air at the Apple store. I love the midnight blue colour. The prints on it didn’t seem too bad but they’re probably constantly wiping it.

Might pull the trigger on a 16/512 config. I have an old 12” MacBook from 2015 that’s slow to a crawl and overheats quite quickly that I’d be upgrading from.
I've got a 2013 still going very strong. Giving me no reason to upgrade at all.

    • So I returned an MBA (ordered another one with different specs) and the store couldn’t refund the gift card.
Any ideas how I can get this sorted out ?

    • I bought an iPad Air (256G) and it had battery issues. it depleted faster than my other iPad Air (same model, bought last year, but 64GB). It's also worse compared to my kid's friend's iPad Air (same model, same capacity and bought almost around the same time). Battery was dropping about 1% per 1-2 minutes when running just Discord.

Took it to Apple Store for an exchange, and the new one doesn't have the issue anymore.
A family member had the exact same problem with a brand new iPhone SE last year. Apple store replaced the phone and the new one works fine. I wonder what would cause that sort of battery issue?

I couldn't either so I got the CIBC cashback credit card (10% cash back up to $200). Not the 20% back from tangerine, but still brought the price down on the base m2 by $150.

Or rather: just buy this now or wait? Not in a huge rush
Definitely not. Might be an iPad event in October.

    • Has anyone purchased the IPad Air recently? Any feedback regarding any build quality issues I'm reading from a few months ago? I was thinking of getting either the 256GB Air or the 128GB pro.

    • There are RFD'ers that regularly sell them for 8% off. One thing to look out for though, I discovered there are 2 types of gift cards that seem similar but are actually not the same. There is the usual Apple gift card that you can apply to your account immediately up to the maximum, which is good if you want to purchase some from users but are not going to apply them to an order right away. The other kind is what they call an "Apple STORE Gift Card" and it cannot be applied to your account, it must be directly applied to a purchase.

For a digital card it may not be easy to tell which is which, I have been told that often the "store" version is given to people trading in hardware, perhaps not directly through Apple but through third party companies that handle trade-ins on behalf of Apple. For a physical card there are guidelines on Apple's website to identify the different card types.
There's no difference in cards anymore if you're getting one since Apple introduced unified GCs. Your Apple Account balance is unified across all storefronts and any kind of card can be added to your balance. My balance has been made both from cards I've purchased at regular retailers and hardware trade-ins at Apple.

However if someone has the old, completely white Apple Store gift cards you have to go to an actual Apple Store and use them to purchase a new gift card to add *that* gift card to your account.

      Apple MacBook Pro 13.3" w/ Touch Bar (Fall 2020) - Space Grey (Apple M1 Chip / 512GB SSD / 8GB RAM)
The new version is $1,824 from Apple for 8/512GB and you get a $210 Apple gift card. So that's a better value if you have a use for the gift card.

    • There’s an annual limit on the number of items you can buy with the education discount (1 per hardware category). So your hypothetical situation couldn’t occur. I agree that the eligibility rules are VERY loose so Apple won’t bother auditing.
Ahh, of course. That was the only situation I could think of where Apple might be unhappy that someone was abusing the discount. Thanks for pointing that out.

    • I'm leaning towards a M2 air with upgrades but I'm not in a rush so I will wait until the next gift card deal. I'm slightly concerned about the lack of fan and throttling but don't truly understand how to know if it will impact me. I don't edit video or photos as I have no skill or creativity. Ha ha. My typical usage is 4-6 Firefox tabs open at all times, Messages app at all times, Microsoft To Do most of the time and then maybe 1 other app (Cura, Excel, Notes, etc) depending what I'm up to. 80% of the time this is on my lap, not a hard surface. With my current MacBook Pro (specs listed a few posts above) the fan does come on at times. Should this concern me that the M2 Air won't be sufficient for me or is it not a proper comparison to make? I have never owned a laptop without a fan so I'm having a hard time understanding how to figure this out.

I do understand I could get the Air and test it out then return if it's insufficient for my needs and get the MBP after that. However that is time consuming so I'd love to try to get this right the first time.
Responding to you and anyone else debating between M1 vs M2, Air vs Pro. I’ve owned an M1 MBA for over a year now, only upgrade was to 16GB.

I regularly have 100+ tabs open on two browsers (Safari and Brave), Zoom/Meet, Spotify, Logic Pro, iMovies, Photoshop, and miscellaneous other apps open. I haven’t had any issues with lag or overheating.

It actually blows my mind how great this little MBA is.

    • I think Apple would only investigate if someone was abusing the promotion by purchasing more devices than a family could reasonably use. So if someone claims to be a teacher who needs twenty discounted laptops, Apple might check to make sure they're not just reselling them.

    • They do have the right to "audit" purchases and will charge the remainder if they find out. Whether they actually do that and catch people who knows...
Considering they include parents of students, generic university "staff", and "homeschool" teachers, it would be very difficult to enforce the eligibility criteria.

"Available to current and newly accepted university students and their parents, as well as faculty, staff and homeschool teachers at all levels."

This week there aren’t any Apple gift cards promotions that I’ve found. One usually pops up every few weeks. It should be noted it won’t be 10% off. It will be 10% back in points at the retailer for every $50 spent. Typically these promos occur at either Canadian Tire (10% back in CT money) or Loblaws stores (10% back in Optimum points).

I’m upgrading from a 2015 MBA i5 4GB 256 and am a light user so I think the base will do me well.

I recently merged my photo libraries onto a Samsung T7 and will use that combo and keep the base 256gb storage.

      Any thoughts?

With the $210 GC, plus the 10% off GC promos & the 9x Aeroplan (at worst 1c per mile) I’m at $860 all in with taxes. Figure I could sell my MBA for $300-400

That’s true. Personally I’ve made a purchase on during the BTS sale in 2020/2021/2022 without issue. I do not qualify in any way technically speaking but that hasn’t been an issue. Personally I don’t think they care or audit at all during this sale. I think it drives in a ton of extra customers and they don’t truly care if they qualify or not.

    • Thanks, so in the end my out of pocket cost is $1535, and netting out the value of the gift card ends up at $1315 (approximately, didn't factor in tax difference, but ballpark).

No AppleCare any more for the M2.

Edit: costco model is 8C CPU / 8C GPU - I don't see a reason for the higher cost?

    • Stupid question time. Bought an M2 Air at Costco today, came to ~$1680 or so after tax. I just went to the last page of checkout on Apple and I see $1535 after tax with a $210 saving. Does that mean I'm paying $1535 - $210, or some other amount in the end? It's a dumb question I know, but I read much of this thread and I'm still confused. TIA.

    • Thank you. As a curious person am I correct in my assumption that the fan usage on my existing 2020 i5 MBP means nothing when comparing to the M2 Air?
That's right. The M1/M2 uses significantly less power than the Intel chips did, which means less heat.
