always better to sell your old phone through the usual channels instead of trading -in . Iphones sell fast and for good money .

That’s usually true but if it’s for a few bucks less..., I have a flaky power port and I don’t feel like the hassle of kijiji buyers so the trade in might make sense.

    • I think it’s just a reflection on the CAD/USD exchange rate since the offer is not available in the states like the similar gift card offer that was available last Black Friday

      I agree in general.
However, I seem to recall Apple at one point deducting the trade-in value from the total price BEFORE taxes.
I don't see that in their system now, and you have to wait for 2 weeks for the discount after you've paid full price.

What's the typical resale value of an IPhone 7 anyways? Especially with a failing battery? Everything else is in mint condition. $80 isn't reasonable?

You would get double that on the street.

Even with a failing battery? Wow, I guess forget the trade-in then.

Last month I traded in 2 really old iPad's to upgrade to 8th gen models and that's what they did. Paid full price up front but then I was credited the trade in amount + tax adjustment after I sent the devices in. From the time I sent the devices in to getting the credit was only maybe 2 or 3 days.

I was quoted 150 for my 7 plus with its original battery and poor charger port and on kijiji they are going for 180.

      Each case is different

    • Apple uses an exchange rate of 1.4 in canadian store while the rate is only 1.2.

I don't know if apple pays additional customs/taxes on each product though.

Weird, that's different than how they do it in-store. In-store they just give you a Gift Card for the quoted amount (which doesn't include taxes) even if you're immediately putting it towards another device, because they sell you the new device in a separate transaction and use the GC as payment.

Wonder why it's different...given the value of these that's a decent amount of money you lose out on.

Can't speak for the in-store trade in experience because I've never done that but the bonus tax savings definitely pushed me to do the trade in online. They were also offering bonus trade in value at the time.

Yeah I've done it 3 times through the store and that's how it's done. Like if something says $180 through their trade-in calculator you get $180, not $180+tax.

If I had known the tax was included through online I definitely would've done my mom's iPad that way, especially since it sounds like you can receive the new one before sending the old one(s) away?

When I did my phones I just did the phones and didn't buy anything.

E: For online is just 1:1 for devices though? Or can you trade-in multiple devices towards one new one? Because that's what I did in-store for my mom's new iPad.

Do you have an iPhone 8 or 8+? I just went on the apple website to see what value I would get for my iPhone 8 64Gb and was quoted $125 only.

Yes, street value might be better, but YMMV based on what's available locally. For example, here in Calgary the Kijiji listings a start at $200 (for unlocked) but there's easily 30+ ads posted just since June 1st, so the market is flooded. In my area I *might* be able to get more return by selling myself compared to selling back to Apple, but the hassle might not be worth it.

Sometimes it’s better to trade in. On FB people lowball a lot. Even after posting screenshots of Apple Trade-in in my post for my iPhone 11 Pro Max (100% battery life), people were sending me $600 offers. I traded in instead of dealing with these cheap lowballer’s. Most annoying part is they say $600 ‘cash today😄, getting few bucks more for all the hassle and dealing with these weirdos is not worth it.

    • You know I think there's actually two different trade-in programs through Apple's site so this is kind of confusing lol.

For my iPhone 8+ 64 GB, if I do it through Apple's process while buying a new phone, I'm only quoted $185 (and you can only do phone-to-phone and tablet-to-tablet, can't do phone-to-tablet or tablet-to-phone).

But if you go through the "Trade-in without a purchase" thing that takes you to Phobio's website, I'm quoted $230? Which I legit think I'm going to take even though I just randomly checked this? lmao

You are right. I just checked mine again. Via Phobio it was $135. As part of purchasing a new phone it was $125. Not much of a difference for my iPhone 8 64gb, but I imagine other models will see larger returns.
