Today through June 21 you can watch Watchmen for free on HBO. If you're in Canada, you'll want to select Go to HBO.com (not "Go to Crave.ca/HBO, the home of HBO in Canada") on the splash screen that comes up. You'll then have to provide your email address and birthdate for access to the show, but no other information is required.

Watchmen is a nine-episode series that starts in 1921 with the Tulsa Massacre, when a mob of white Americans attacked the Black residents and businesses in Tulsa, Oklahoma. HBO is making the series free as "an extension of the network's content offering highlighting Black experiences, voices and storytellers".

The show is based on the graphic novel of the same name, and stars Regina King, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Jeremy Irons.

    • Brilliant series. And before some idiot says it, comics are mostly political.

    • Best show of 2019 IMO

    • Garbage. Haven't watched tSnyder's movie but it can't be worse than this. Doomsday Clock and this series are both such a disgrace to the original work which tackled serious issues and good character development

To each their own, but to call it garbage is lazy.

    • And calling it a brilliant series isn't, right? LOL

It's just my opinion man. If you like it, enjoy it. But there's plenty of people who didn't - and rightfully so. That's why there won't be season 2. Before you say "They never intended to make season2" let me remind you that the season finale ends on cliffhanger

    • I wouldn't go so far as to say it's the best TV show of 2019 (the 2019 seasons of Succession, Fleabag, and the mini-series Chernobyl would probably get that distinction for me). But I would nominate Episode 8 of the Watchmen series as the single best TV episode of 2019.

Watchmen was the highest rated debut season for HBO since Westworld 3 years ago. HBO would love another season, or 3.

The only reason Watchmen is in limbo right now is because Damon Lindelof, the showrunner, is leaving the show. He said he used up all his ideas in Season 1. Lindelof has encouraged HBO to carryon in recent interviews.

As you mentioned though, Lindelof did pitch the show as one season, and when HBO asked him about coming back, he declined and stuck to his original vision.

Lol. We don’t care. If people wanted reviews they would hopefully go to professional review sites. Start at metacritic. “Must See series” .

Also, 108 positive reviews from critics: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/watchmen/s01

Synder's movie was pretty bad, but this was a breath of fresh air. I'm sure even Alan Moore would approve if he ever watches it.

But he probably won't and that's fine too, considering what a disaster League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was.

    • I think it was episode 3 or 4 that lost me the first time around (The crazy guy with his slave clones on another planet).

But the second try I gave it, it was spectacular! Loved it!

I dont know anything about the comics, as a standalone entertainment piece this was one of the best shows I've seen in years.

The Snyder movie WAS garbage. Completely went against the spirit of the book but then again not surprising given Snyder's neoconservative tendencies.

    • I loved the comic. Along with The Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen was a defining piece of literature when I was a kid. The movie was disappointing but I thought the series was excellent with only a few things that I disliked. I also thought that the surprise reveals were too obvious. But highly entertaining regardless and a decent expansion of the original story.

    • Top 5 show from last year and WELL worth the watch, but anyone saying number 1 hasn't seen Chernobyl.

    • This is an absolutely superb series which everyone should watch. Since it picks up where the original comic leaves off and assumes the viewer is intimately familiar with those events, I would strongly suggest re-reading the original comic before watching--if you don't have the comic (or want an updated Watchmen experience) try the motion comic (Youtube)--it's basically the full unabridged comic in which the original artwork has been animated and voice acted (great stuff!).

Lindelof's treatment is actually worthy of the original material, which is basically the highest praise I could give it.

      EDIT:

Umm. Going to try to be polite and suggest you might have missed the point. The original Watchmen also ends on a spectacular cliff-hanger, and it's not because Moore wanted to leave the property open for endless milking. The original comic ends with the newspaper mail-room clerk reaching into a bag of letters to pick one to print with his boss telling him "I leave it entirely in your hands". Does the newspaper print Rorschach's letter exposing Veidt? Moore purposely leaves the ending open to turn the entire comic into a Rorschach test for the audience, with each reader's interpretation of the ending being shaped by their personal experiences, beliefs, and engagement with the various themes explored. Lindelof follows the master in leaving the ending "entirely in [our] hands".

I loved it so I will give Chernobyl a whirl.
I also really liked For All Mankind. It's an apple one.
