It ended up being 4 days.
THX OP on the tip. I was looking at getting a cheap all arounder this season to take the kids out in the chariot ... I ended up grabbing a Cannondale Trail 5, for what I will be doing with it it's gonna get the job done. Good pricing for a 24 at the start of the season.
Picked up the last GT Agressor in Ontario located in downtown Toronto. It was a size small which I was concerned would be too small for my wife at 5'7" since they advertise it fitting 5'-5'5". But it fit her like a glove, and looks great. Rides great as well. For $300 it's a steal. I think I like it better than my Northrock XC29 from Costco.
Also just a heads up, anyone who purchased a bike from MEC during this clearance, you have 1 year of free tune ups at any MEC location nationwide.
The synapse has a more relaxed geometry so you'll likely feel more comfortable on it. you also have options for different sizes, but the sr1 only comes in a medium size.
If you aren't comfortable with clipless, use flats. If you go clipless, start with spd sh-56 cleat or reduce the clip tension on your pedals if you have sh51 cleats on your shoes. If. you have road cleats, then you need to get used to that as they are really designed to clip in and stay clipped, not stop and go riding or where you may bail (ie mountain biking) more often.
At the end of the day, the best bike for you is the one you'll ride.
I am delighted to hear the riding position is less aggressive on the Sora. I will definitely use the rack capability for commuting to work to. I bought combo clip-pedals so hope to adapt over time.
To top it off...we had like 1 or 2 days in the GTA where temps actually fell below -5 this winter. It was the most pathetic winter i've ever seen in the 3 decades i've been in toronto. Global warming is hitting hard.
If it is something having to do with your body's position on the bicycle, then maybe you need to adjust the position of handlebars and seat to better suit your anatomy, or perhaps you have some physical condition (even mild, such as knee and foot misalignment, etc.) that prevents you from getting a good fit.
MEC lets you return the bike if you don't like it, so ride it around for a while when the snow clears and see if you like it.
I’ll start by saying I won’t enjoy getting harsh feedback but, I still want your honest feedback.
I got wrapped up picking up the Cannodale Sora. I am six foot so I got the last 56 inch from mec in Ottawa. Silly thing is I have an older Northrock SR1 but never found it that comfortable. I am intrigued but, the newer bike different gear drive thinking it is less of a hassle to use then the older style gears on the Northrock (always hated the front gears on the pedals.
You guys are aware the Cannodale and the Northrock are very similar. Something about Northrock doesn’t feel right—slightly too small maybe? To be honest I’ve never felt super confident on a road bike especially using bike shows but want to give it a go.
I dream of commuting confidently to work 30 min away— almost all on the bike path.
Is it worth it or is it’s ridiculous to get swept up on the clearance price, better frame and hopefully better fit then the Northrock SR1?
Thanks.
What are the significant differences between Sora, Claris, and Tiagra? In my mind, there is only 1 significant difference, which is the possibility of hydraulic disk brakes with Tiagra. Admittedly it is a big difference, but not every Tiagra equipped bike will come with the Tiagra brakes. Plenty of bike manufacturers will include 3rd-party mechanical disk brakes with their otherwise full Tiagra group sets.
Tiagra also comes with 1 more cog than Sora and 2 more cogs than Claris, but I don't think that is a big deal. It is a bit lighter and has a nicer finish too.
Tiagra's rear derailleur does not have the same more modern mechanism, "Shadow RD" as the higher end group sets like 105 and Ultegra, which supposedly offers a smoother operation and lower profile. The Tiagra derailleur is the older design, similar to Claris and Sora.
So, arguably, Tiagra could be seen as closer to Sora than it is to 105, with the exception of the hydraulic brakes.
EDIT: 3 hours after that phone call this morning to find out about timelines, I received a call from them saying the bike is ready for pickup, so do with that information what you will...
Looking at the 24” Cannondale for the kid.
I like it. Carbon forks, sora or better gears. Kinda racy position, but not as racey as it gets. Almost the same geometry as a CAAD13. Geo trickle down from higher end bikes never hurts.
She can probably ride a 51cm frame in a racey position (fits like a glove), 54cm and you'll have to shorten stem (more comfort).
Plus you get rim brakes. Much more lighter and easier maintenance involved.
You can still get Cannondale at LBS.
