Shoes.com, OnlineShoes.com, and ShoeMe.ca Shut Down

By Ambia Staley

In a sudden move, online retailer Shoes.com announced on January 27 that it would be halting business immediately.

All 3 of the company's online properties, Shoes.com, OnlineShoes.com, and ShoeMe.ca were taken offline, and its two physical stores in Toronto and Vancouver were closed on Friday.

Shoes.com employs approximately 200 people, who were also made aware of the closure on January 27. The company said in a press release that employees will be compensated through the end of January, although a small group are expected to stay on over the next few weeks as the retailer ties up loose ends.

The company is said to be working with its lenders in order to come up with a plan to liquidate its assets. Shoes.com also intends to file bankruptcy for all or some of its companies.

Shoes.com, OnlineShoes.com, and ShoeMe.ca reportedly served 8 million people across Canada and the United States. There's currently no word on liquidation sales, or how current customers can process returns and exchanges.

    • I was just browsing their website last night after receiving their $30 off $49 email. Too bad.. I have bought 6 pairs of footwear from them since their $40 off $100 offer way back.

    • Always a sad day when more market share goes to walmart or amazon. As they get more and more, they're going to put even more pressures on suppliers to only do business with them. Not a good situation for consumers.

    • It seems like so many of the Canadian started e-commerce retailers only dream of one-day being bought out.

They don't actually plan to be around in 10-20 years.

All we as consumers can do is just utilize them when they do crazy sales to get market share.

Then when they go bankrupt we should pretend to be outraged and say we always bought at full price. This will tell another entrepreneur that maybe they can make it work.

Then we just ignore the new entrant until they do their crazy sale and repeat the process.

So yeah. I always bought from Shoeme at full price because the prices were reasonable and ....

    • Shoeme.ca is shutting down end of this month. There are some extra clearance sale in stores YMMV.

Their website is not available anymore and I know they had an awesome deal last week on RFD. I believe it was Spend $50 save $30?

They are going to work until at the end of this month only so if ordered something from them and have not received any shipping notifications.
I suggest you call your credit card to do a charged back or call Paypal to reverse the transaction.

Most of my favorite stores went bankrupt like Target, Shop.ca, and now this.
      Next, it will be Sears.

    • Wow this is sad to hear. I have ordered a lot from them in the past, always quick shipping and good deals to be had with the discounts. No wonder the previous few sales have been so good.

    • Shoes is just a poor product online IMO. Lots of people have foot problems or need a certain type of arch/width and you can't try those online. You can entice them by offering deep discounts, but for a 10-20% discount i'd much rather just go to the store, try the shoe on and then buy it there. Some shoes like Vans/Burkenstocks/Blundstones people know their sizing, but they carried a lot of odd brands as well.

I believe they were acquired by some other people...or something. Not sure who in their right mind would do that.

    • Wow, I still have a few $25 off coupons which were received via previous purchases. Had a great experience with then too. Hassle free, postage paid returns and exchanges.
Sad to see them go. As someone said though, online is a hit'n'miss business with shoes because you can't try them on.

I wouldn't wait on the email. They were never good at replying to those (for me anyway) but phone support was always amazing. I'd try to call them first

So interesting, I would say this company had some of the best customer service I've experience. Never had a problem buying from them, returning shoes, getting a problem resolved, immediate responses to questions.

      sorry to see them go

Shoeme had free shipping, coupons, and usually 9~% cashback through eBates. If Amazon has no competition, they won't offer low prices (they rarely do anyway). They don't do price-matches because they know people will shop there either way. Also, their customer service is crap.

    • Just found out this morning. Too bad. I need new dress shoes and now stuck without a good online alternative for selection and price.

Amazon.ca is getting better, but still need to work on their Canadian retail prices. I may just have to buy Amazon.com and ship to Buffalo.

Looks like their website is gone
      www.shoeme.com works
which is interesting because the header on the page reads shoeme.ca

EDIT: When you click on any pair of shoes, it redirects you to shoeme.ca. You have to manually change it to .com to see the pair. might be a pain to attempt a checkout

    • The problem with Canadian online retailers is that they are not competitive with either other Canadian retailers or American retailers down south. We are a nation of savers, not savers of money for a rainy day, but savers at the checkout. We look for the best deal. I have seen the best deal on shoes in Canada ever. If you want good, quality, not Made in China shoes inexpensively, it is south of the border or Europe. Everything is overpriced here and there is no competition on anything.

Why is it a sad day?

A friend of mine who owns a small store selling random novelty things for way too much money says she is doing well. I won't go into that store because I feel like I need to buy something since it's a 'local business'.

Here's the kicker, I got a card game off of amazon for $14.99. She was charging almost $30 for it (taxes in).

So you wonder why people chose to buy from walmart or amazon in the end? Because it's cheaper, plain and simple.
