Free On Steam: Alien Swarm PC Game (includes 4-player multiplayer co-op)
Free video games are always a welcome sight! Valve, the developer that has brought us big titles such as Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress 2, and Left 4 Dead, has released a new game for free. It's called Alien Swarm -- a top down 3D shooter where you fight your way through, wait for it... swarms of aliens. It's squad based, and supports up to 4 players in cooperative multiplayer action. There are persistent items to be unlocked by gaining levels and over 40 weapons -- pretty swanky for a free game.
The Onion A.V. Club rates in an "A" while Destructoid gives it a 7.5/10, calling it "an enjoyable shooter at an absolute steal of a non-price." We'll take it! -

If you like golf and golf games, you'll be pleased to learn that EA Sports has launched Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online, which is a browser based PC game. It has some free-to-play content that should keep you entertained for a while, as well as additional content that you can pay for. You pay for points, which can be put towards items like clubs, balls, and attire. To access all courses, there is a $9.99 monthly or $59.99 yearly subscription fee. Reportedly, the game runs very well.
At the very least, the free portion is worth checking out. You do need to create an account and to install a bit of software, but free is free! The game runs on PC and Macs. -

Pirates of the Caribbean Online Free Massively-Multiplayer PC, Mac Game
Disney launched Pirates of the Caribbean Online last October as a free massively-multiplayer game in the vein of Everquest, but with Pirates. Here's their synopsis:
Set sail on the vast blue waters of the Caribbean in search of adventure, fortune, and fame in the world of the infamous Jack Sparrow and the evil Davy Jones. Create and customize your own pirate, build and outfit your own ship, and assemble a crew of your fellow rogues. Set your own course, your own adventure, and truly live the Legend!
It's totally free to sign up and play but there are ads and certain limits on what you can do within the game world. If you get really into it, you can pay to unlock everything and remove the ads. Reviews of the game are lukewarm, but hey, it's free and works on a Mac too, so maybe if you need a diversion...
