If you're just starting out in the work force or are an established professional looking for a change, there's always a reason to carry around a couple of business cards. Right now, you can pick up 250 premium business cards at Vistaprint.ca which is a decent deal if you're looking to get your name out there. Normally, our Vistaprint deals come from the .com website and shipping usually offsets their freebies. However, at $0.04 a card, this is an excellent time to design your own and prepare for future endeavors.

For those of you who would like to order more than 250, you're in luck. The more you buy, the more you save as you can purchase 500 for $15 ($0.03 a card), 1000 for $20 ($0.02 a card) and 1500 for $25 (0.02 a card).

December 14 update: Good news! Google has extended their free calling to US and Canadian phone numbers through 2012. This feature is now in its third year and is a great way to save on long-distance bills.

Originally posted January 10, 2011:Here's some good news from Google! In August we reported that Google had rolled out free calling to US and Canadian phone numbers. The only catch was that it would only be available through the end of 2010. Happily, Google announced that they're continuing to offer the service for free through 2011. This is a huge boon for anyone looking to save on long-distance bills or cellphone plans.

If you haven't yet used this feature, when you're within Gmail, click "Call Phone", select the country you wish to call and then enter the phone number. Make sure that you have speakers and a microphone hooked up to your computer. As we said above, you'll be able to call any Canadian or US number for free. You can call other countries for about 2¢ a minute.

Forum user afireinside27 gave us a heads up that Chapters/Indigo are now offering free unlimited Wi-Fi in stores! In order to access the Wi-Fi, you will need to be a Plum Rewards or IRewards member. You can register for Plum Rewards for free here.

The free Wi-Fi is available through Bell, so Bell Mobility customers can also take advantage. You'll be presented with a sign-in page when you load your browser. Once you've signed in, you'll have unlimited use while you are within the store. To find your nearest Chapters/Indigo location, click here.

If you dabble in 3D modeling, here's some good news -- the Autodesk 123D beta has been released for free. 123D is a stripped down version of Autodesk Inventor (software that can cost you a big chunk of change!).

It's similar to Google's free 3D modeling software SketchUp, but it has some advanced features like assemblies and constraints. Take a look here if you are interested.

It's pretty hard to escape from Facebook these days. As a small or medium business, you might be on the fence when it comes to using Facebook as a marketing or growth tool. According to the site FAQ, you won't be automatically renewed at twelve months. It seems like an easy, low-risk way to make the jump if your business currently lacks an online presence.

Wave Accounting Inc. is a Toronto-based company that provides web-based accounting software designed specifically for small businesses and it's all free, online, at WaveAccounting.com. The idea is to take those paper documents and Excel documents and get them into an accounting system with as little pain as possible. You can import transactions from your bank accounts, have Wave Accounting categorize expenses for you, and let the system do some of that manual accounting work. What's the catch? How can it be free? Here's how they explain it:

Toronto-based Payment Evolution has been getting some press recently with articles in the Financial Post and on StartupNorth.ca highlighting their free online payroll solution. It's tailored to small businesses looking to spend more time working on their business and less time dealing with the administration of payroll. Free is of course a very small-business friendly price, and it'll remain free for those businesses that have 5 employees or less. If you have 6 or more employees, it's still a very affordable $18 per month.

As far as we're aware, this is the only free payroll solution available in Canada; if you find more or other useful small business tools, please share them in them comments!
