This coming Wednesday, May 21, Ontario Goodwill stores are taking 50% off everything (some exclusions may apply).

New items should also be arriving hourly! Hunt for some great bargains and support an upstanding institution at the same time -- you never know what might turn up!

    • oh what has RFD become when we are posting deals from Goodwill and pasta sauce, water, etc!

      Thanks to the ultra cheapos who would see deals on RFD, then buy 20 of the sale item and try making money buy selling it on ebay or Craiglist!

      Because of your actions, nobody posts good deals anymore because they get wiped so fast that the posters' own family members and friends lose out on the deal! Therefore they just keep the deal for themselves and no longer post them here!

      You clearly have no idea how Goodwill is operated. Why is it that people think Goodwill is only for poor people?

      So you're saying Goodwill would be better off if it made less money? It's not like Goodwill has a shortage of items, either. They clearly rely on sales from all sorts of shoppers to run their charity.

      In the poster's defense - it is true - not alot of people do understand how Goodwill operates. However, I'm not sure you fully understand it either. They seek donations from all people and also seek sales from all people... to a limit. It creates an avenue where money made goes to jobs in the community - within Goodwill or throughout. One of the other key pillars Goodwill focuses on and known to most people - is a place to allow those who are less unfortunate to shop - which isnt really 100% true (you can expect to pay more than you'd expect... so wouldnt 50% off be better in their favour?)

      You are correct, it is not like they have a shortage of items - but they do have limited quantity of quality items. Just because they might have 5,000 "world's best dad" t-shirts... and 5 pierre cardin knits - doesn't give rise to a statement like "Goodwill doesn't have a shortage of items". RFD however is known to squeeze sales dry just because of the vast amount of subscribers.

      So... I think the original posters idea was: Should 50% off sale used by those that need it, or should it be used by those that donated the clothes in the first place. I'm sure the money used to buy that Pierre Cardin knit by a job-less parent will be used the same as your steady income dollar. Since you seem to understand how the money used helps the needy - why not wait until the sales are back at full price and make more dollars count for more.

    • Poor or rich I would still shop at Goodwill/Value Village type stores. Bargain is a bargain especially on items such as Curtains, Furniture or Kids clothes, so thank you OP for the post.

      As for it being for the poor I would have to disagree since items are not always so cheapest especially considering most of the items in these stores are donated to them. Its like saying garage sales are only for the poor yet thats not the case. If your lifestyle or preference is to not shop at thrift stores then so be it, but others do not feel that way.

      Good job on deciding for others what deals they should and shouldn't be made aware of. I frequent thrift stores quite often. On a good find I have saved quite a bit of cash at these 50% off events. So i'm appreciative of the OP's post.

      On another note, I don't see how you're in any position to judge what is a worthy thread or not when you haven't posted anything yourself.

      Not to mention, good deals have no problem staying on top.

I mostly look to support my video game and music collecting habits personally, but if someone who is poor needs some clothing like a nice pair of jeans and a shirt, or even nice brand name clothing, they'll have no problem finding it regardless. I shop at thrift stores often enough to know this. Not to mention, Goodwill also donates some of it's items to poor people for free.

      The reason Goodwill has these sales (it seems they have them once every 2 weeks now), is too boost sales and dump off the excess of items they receive. On the 50% off days they're putting out a lot more items on the racks than they do on regular days, so I really can't argee with your argument here.

      Goodwill also seeks to gain the maximum amount on their items factoring in that turnover needs to be rather quick, given the volume of goods they receive. I've seen some items price rather high, actually. Not to mention that some locations hold auctions for their more valuable items. So their pricing is not exactly designed in favour of their poorer shoppers. However, what they do with their profits IS favourable to needy people who benefit from Goodwill's charity.

      I must say, I am very impressed with your sales strategy knowledge of the Goodwill. Had you previously worked there? Become aware of this from them? Read it on a blog maybe?

      I’m not here to judge your spending habits or anything like that. I am simply defending a comment against a poster based on his/her opinion to which I support. As a matter of fact, I gladly would take a gander at thrift stores now and then. They are amazing if you want to look for retro blazers that your parents tossed out thinking clothes don’t have a repeat life cycle. In keeping with this, I have a good idea what the quality of clothes that you can pickup from there – and I wouldn’t say “someone shouldn’t have a problem picking up a brand name pair of jeans” entirely true. Albeit even worse after an RFD effect.

      Although you mentioned you often check out the video games and music collection. That’s great the selection is so massive – quite possibly because a XBOX or record/cd player isn’t the necessities of life like food, home, clothing, etc (you know, the smaller stuff).

      You had also mentioned the Goodwill isn’t exactly for the poor – I think I actually stated that in my original comment as well. And to that effect, in keeping with this – a 50% off sale would be greatly appreciated to those that can’t afford it.

      Again, your spending habits are your own. I personally just think a 50% sale would be better suited to those who can actually afford the 50% off. If the items I want are there after, I would gladly pay the dollar, compared to 50 cents – it does go to charity after all right?

      The only reason I don't post buddy is I rather keep the deals to people I PM or family and friends rather than post it so Ultra Cheapos can make a buck buy selling the item on ebay or craiglist instead of saving them some money on something they will use!

      P.S. I didn't mean to offend nobody about Goodwill, to each their own, but look at the deals posted on RFD for the last year, what a drastic change. It makes you think why?

      I suggest the we start a system of when a member is caught trying to make a profit from deals found here to be banned or warned!

      Take a look at the buy/sell listings and you tell me how many fair prices you find!

      If things were different here I promise you that I definitely will post more deals than you would! Your posts # doesn't indicate how many deals you have posted!

      50% off of anything could be a deal for someone, and goodwill/value village is no exception. You have the right to shop or not at these stores during, before or after the sale, so please keep your opinion about whether we should shop or not at a sale to yourself as it is no benefit to this board or the thread.

      If you are not interested in a deal posted then move on or if you think it should not be a deal and is bringing the site down with a 25 cent coupon then please PM a mod and let them know, as I'm pretty sure they can assist you in that matter, Otherwise your opinion is YOURS and not always someone else's. I bet you these stores have no preference of type of shoppers except for those who have $$ regardless of income level.

Sorry that you don't understand that their 50% off sale is designed to attract business, not limit it to only poor people. Otherwise, it would the poor people sale and Goodwill would be making less money than they do on a normal day. What a sales strategy that is. Did YOU read that one off a blog?

      The clothing section is way bigger than their media section, actually. Compared to the couple video games that I MIGHT find in a week there are thousands of clothing items available EACH DAY. I flip through it from time to time and almost always do I see at least one shirt that is brand new with tags. Not to mention that I had no troubles finding great stuff there back when I did pay more attention to the clothing section.

      If you think 50% off sales at Goodwill should be limited to poor people, then why wouldn't you think the same about other sales? I really don't understand this logic. The more people that shop at Goodwill, the better. Why? Because that gives them more money that they can use for charitable causes. They can hire more people to work at their stores. They do give jobs to people who might find it hard to find a job elsewhere.

    • I am going to have to agree with chrza on this one. I have been working in a large thrift store as part of a management team for the past 7 years or so and I can definelty say that we do not target just the "poor" people.

      We target all income group earners, like he said the more people=more sales....basic business...
