Visions Electronics: Acer Aspire ONE Netbook w/1GB RAM, 120GB HD, XP $359, Sharp 42" 1080p HDTV $988

There are some good deals over at Visions Electronics right now. Specifically, there are solid prices on a well equipped Acer Aspire One Netbook and on a Sharp 42" LCD HDTV. $359 is a very good price for the Acer Aspire One in question. The bonus laptop case is a great perk as well. Unfortunately for some of us, the Aspire One offer is in-store only. To check if there's a Visions Electronics near you, use their store locator. We haven't found any reviews of the Sharp 42", but here's the product page from Sharp.ca. It's not an Aquos model, but it still features 3 HDMI inputs and doesn't look far removed spec wise. It's definitely worth a look at $988.

    • The AA1 is a fine machine. It looks great and it feels like a quality machine, the build is just as good as any laptop I have ever used.

      Acer did do some very stupid corner cuttings;

      -no cutout on the case for ram upgrade which means you have to take the machine apart to install ram,
      -the mini PCI slot does not have the connector hardware for actual use, it looks like everything else is there, just not the connector.
      -uses a tiny fan for cooling which means the fan runs at very high speed so you can hear it

      Bluetooth would have been a nice feature, but it does not have it.

      My biggest gripe is that the touch pad buttons are at the side of the touchpad which makes it impossible to use with just 1 hand. I modded mine with external mouse buttons at the bottom of the touchpad.

      The english/french kb is also a pain, you can buy a US AA1 KB and install it, but that is money out of your pocket.

      The screen is awesome, it is a tad small for my taste but the LED backlighting makes everything look really sharp.

      The one in the link is only 3 cell, the 3 cell can only give about 2-2.5 hrs. I have the 6 cell and the battery life is 6+ hours, it is pretty insane.

      The EEE is a better machine IMHO because it does have a 10" screen and better mouse buttons, but it is not worth the 50% premium.

      I loaded my AA1 with 1.5gb of ram and it feels almost as fast as my C2D laptop. The Atom is quite a capable CPU.

      To say the AA1 is the best netbook would be an overstatement, to say that it is the best value is dead on.

      Well i bought one and it isnt total crap ......well only had it for 2 weeks now but 2 things , yup them side mouse buttons arent greatest idea and second , lil bugger runs hot as heck .Might use it this winter as room heater lol .Think ya can slide it in the lil protective pouch it comes with and use it as heating pad

    • I really like the asus eee. I had the 700 series and although it proved to be too small for my liking (e.g. keyboard and screen size), it was a tough little bugger! The 1000 series is quite nice but for $100 or so more I can get a toshiba duocore 13" with cdrom, better screen, and a far more powerful processor.

      I think at a certain point the price point of the EEE becomes a bit of a deterrent considering it has such a weak processor and lacks a dvd rom. Great for travelling, definitely not something I'd use as a laptop replacement.

      If you can I'd strongly consider returning it for an asus eee 900, or 1000 if you can justify the added cost. They're MUCH better machines.

    • Here's my take: The Aspire One is a great deal for anyone in the market for that sort of limited-used device. I bought one for my parents a couple months back, and they've used it extensively when traveling. It's worked great to store and view camera pics, skype, check email, browse the web, etc.

      I compared the MSI, EEE, and Acer, the three that were out at the time, and the Acer was the best price/performance of the three. I suspect it still is, as the price is down to $299 for the base model at Staples. Those $500 and up netbooks are missing the boat IMO. The whole attraction of these things is the small size/lightweight/low cost combo. Lose any one of those three, and you may as well buy a notebook. Until the competition drops in price, I suspect the Acer will continue to sell strongly in this market.

      Nice comment! Do you own one? I'm typing this post on one right now. Do your research - Acer contracted Quanta Computers to build the Aspire One. In case you don't recognize the name, they build ~60% of the notebooks on the market, including Dell and HP. I also took mine apart. Guess what?! The motherboard is stamped Foxconn.

      It's a great little netbook. Some nicer netbooks out there but this is the best bang for your buck. I even managed to install OSX86 on the hard drive. My only beefs are the short 2h battery life with the 3 cell battery and the STUPID bilingual keyboard.

    • you forgot to add you get a free laptop case...sweet deal...except i would wait for the 6 cell to come out on the local store scene...if you travel with this (which is what i want it for), you need the extra battery life...

      and as per "acer sucks" - most of the reviews are quite positive for the "price" of the product you are getting...

      go waste your money on a more expensive and heavier laptop if you like...but this little baby works well for me

      I now own the Asus 1000H... it's a lot better machine.. faster, bigger keyboard, solid build.. most importantly, no bilingual keyboard which was a deal breaker for me...

Sure the caveat is that you need an Amerifriend or live close to the border to get it but seriously who doesn't fall into either one of those categories nowadays? S10 FTW!

      I have the AA1, some Asus laptop, Dell 640m, and IBM T40. The T40 has the best chasis, but it has the shittiest internals. The current T40 I have is a replacement because the first one had a solder joint problem with the GPU. The replacement has the same issue too. Aside from the case, chasis of the thinkpad series and the nipple pointer, there is nothing exceptional about them.

      I would gladly buy the S10, last time I checked the S10 was sold out and you had to get on the list to purchase one. The S10 looks to be a generally better netbook than the AA1; bigger screen, better mouse buttons, pci express slot, easy RAM upgrade, and looks better. Overall the AA1 is $50 cheaper and available in Canada so that is the only saving grace. I would pay an extra $50 for the S10, but I would not want to burden my amerifirends with bringing one over for me.

    • I must say From EEEPC 4GB 701 to AA1 was a huge step up for me.

      I'm very satisfied with the quality of the laptop.

      Compare to EEEPC701 it's freakin fast. way bigger HDD space, bigger, brighter screen, bigger keyboard, bigger EVERYTHING!
      On XP sp3 with vista look, speed it quiet pleasant.

      It works perfectly with Backtrack linux 3, (I'm dual booting with XP)

      the ram upgrade can be a pain but how many times a yr do you actually need to open it up?

      It looks like they could use some help in their production quality control as my friend's AA1 didn't go to sleepmode when he closed the lid (even with control panel power management, he ended up exchanging it for another one and it seems to work fine now)
      one more reason to buy it from a B&M store.

      To be honest with you, I like the side mouse button.

    • I have an Acer Aspire One and I love it. The bilingual keyboard is pretty lame but the keys can be remapped with software. The touchpad's mouse buttons suck but who cares? I use a mouse. Right now I have TinyVista on it and it runs like a charm.

      When I bought this last month it had the best price among all the netbooks. When you start going to the $500-700 range (Asus) you might as well just buy a regular notebook.

      I don't regret buying it at all.

      sure it looks better, but price still doesn't beat the AA1

      you can find plenty of Dell 1390 Wifi card for 20~shipped and it's compatible with Airport.

      How's its speed on OSX btw?

      I tried Vista with 1.5GB ram w/tweaks and I wasn't too impressed.
      I prefer XP's snappiness

      Looking at the specs and gallery pics .... is the S10 a rebranded Asus eee 1000H? The shape, styling, ports, keyboard, touchpad buttons... all look identical to the eee.

      Heck - you buy it now via Amerifriend and it will cost you $480+CDN.

      Best bang for the buck?

      Pass.

      Buy the Asus and get easier warranty support (if needed).

      Instructions for installing OSX86 is pretty much the same as MSI Wind. I was originally planning to buy that netbook, but let's face it, it's the price of an entry notebook. Yeah, it's smaller but you get a smaller screen & resolution, no optical drive and less upgrade options.

      As for the speed on OSX, I don't really have any experience since I've never used a Mac. In my opinion, it's a tinny bit slow that it's noticeable but not enough to hinder performance of a current OS.

      I bought this little acer, and I don't think it's a piece of crap at all.Of course I got the one with the 6 cell battery pack, 120 HD, 1GB of memory, and I am so impressed.Key board is a little small, but, that's to be expected considering the size. I used to use my big laptop on my trips and in my truck, and I would always have a hard time to connect because of week signals. This little guy picks up wireless signals like I've never seen before.
      I think that maybe you just didn't give it a chance, or, somehow you got a lemon instead of an acer.I am totally impressed for the machine that it is.
      I use it a lot on the road and I never have any problems connecting, as long as I'm in a populated area.The battery life is phenominal on this thing.
      I just think you didn't really give it a chance.

      You can't compare apples with bananas, it's just not fair.You're right though, if you don't mind spending the extra money, of course you will get a better machine, but, for the value of this machine, it is unbeatable.

      You certainly haven't given it a chance. This little thing is awesome, especialy on the road.
      I am certainly not giving mine up that's for sure.I need to get used to the keyboard a little more, and all should be fine after that.

      Note:If some of you are thinking of getting this little Acer, I assure you that you are not waisting your money as some of the posters said.Just don't expect it to do everything a bigger laptop can do, because it can't.But, if you want it to communicate, and use for general applications, you won't be disappointed at all.I strongly recommend this little unit.

      Have a good weekend everyone, I certainly will, especially this weekend since I will be in Toronto for the next 4 days.Yippy!

      well Id' bought one!

      and being price concious, compared to the ASUS 1000 netbook the price differences is the same.. but I picked the Acer because it has a 160 gig harddrive in it!
