Once again, Dell has a pretty good price going on a Vostro laptop. Today, the Dell Vostro 1400 can be had for $699. It comes with:

Intel Core 2 Duo T5470 (1.6GHz, 2MB Cache, 800MHz FSB)
Windows Vista Home Basic
14.1" WXGA LCD
1GB Shared DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz
80G 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
8X CD/DVD Burner
Intel Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Wi-Fi Mini Card

Optionally, you can pay $100 dollars to upgrade from integrated video to a 128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS and $40 for the higher resolution WXGA+ display. If you're not shopping for a notebook computer, Dell also has a pair of well priced Inspiron desktop computers. The slim Inspiron 531s, with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 3800+, Vista Home Premium, 1GB DDR2 667MHz RAM, 250GB SATA hard drive, Geforce 6150 GPU and Microsoft Works 8.5 costs $369 provided you remove the included 19" LCD. The very similarly equipped non-slim Inspiron 531 (which comes with a X2 4000+) also costs $389 when you remove the 19" LCD. All of these computers qualify for free shipping. Lastly, Dell has a new $50 off selected systems coupon. Unfortunately, you can't apply it to the systems mentioned above, it's only for specific configurations.

  In some respects maybe, but the 1400 has a 14.1" screen which IMHO is a better balance of usability and portability. Also, for better or worse, this package includes Vista Home Basic rather than XP. I think that with the 2GB/120GB upgrade, this is a sweet deal.

  Memory wize, it's not a bad move. Disk space wize, it really depends of your needs.

  The thing with technology: if you wait for a cheaper price, it'll ALWAYS be cheaper forever. If you need it now, buy it. If not, don't. Look at iPods: if you bought a Nano last year, it's obsolete now.
  
  Although with Dell their prices tend to fluctuate on a weekly (now bi-weekly) basis. For instance, I ordered my Inspiron 1420 3 weeks ago. This week it's the same price with a slower processor, no free warranty upgrade, and no free travel remote. It would be best for you to monitor the deals on a week-to-week basis and buy it when it gets particularly good.

  I ordered mine with the same specs and price except I got a 120GB HD.

- I waited two weeks to receive my Vostro 1400, one week short of the estimated delivery date. It wasn't too bad... I heard bad stories from the Inspiron series now since Dell can't seem to manufacture the colourful covers properly :P
