The 2.28lb Dell Inspiron Mini 9 netbook launched a couple weeks ago at the launch price of $399 for the XP version before going up to the mid-$400 range. addp009 noticed that the price has come back down to $399 and this time around it's got an extra not in the original configuration - a built in 0.3MP webcam.

There's a couple cheaper upgrade options now too. The upgrade to a 16GB solid state drive is now $40 instead of $50 and the two of the Timbuk2 cases made especially for this netbook have dropped $5 to $25 when you buy it with the notebook. If you need it, built-in Bluetooth 2.1 is another $20 as well.

  If you read the OP carefully, the person lists $399 as the price during the launch period, which is incorrect; the price was $339. This means that it's $60 more than at launch.
  
  That was the point of my post.
  
  The Dell mini 9 with XP 1GB of ram and a 8GB SSD is $399 again, the same price during the launch period before they decided to raise the price to $400+.

  Dell doesn't have a model with HDD. The other problem being, they used 1.8" SSD so you can't just go and do an easy swap to an SATA 2.5" SSD. It's also a PCI-E SSD and I'm not sure how easy they are to find if you wanted to replace.

  Still - there is no way your friend got the configuration specified in this thread (XP - 1GIG RAM - Webcam - etc) for $339 at launch date.
  
  It has *NEVER* been at that price (to date) in Canada.
  
  As Vinman stated - it was the entry level configeration that was that low in price (which this config is NOT).

  Tough to say. Again, it depends on if you need more internal storage than what the SSD's provide.
  
  Why not compare with the 6 cell Acer regularly on for $399? The biggest complaint always is how hard it is to open to upgrade ram/HDD and that it has the bilingual keyboard but you can buy the US keyboard for around $42 USD shipped from Acer. Installation is 3 clips.
  
  The Asus is nice but you may want to consider the 904 model which will have HDD. Not sure of availability though.

  not really looking to upgrade anything, just want a lightweight laptop for basic functions, not gaming or anything. also HD size doesnt matter but 16 gb isnt really all that much. a couple movies, some music, etc and its full.

  I have not seen any review that directly compares the build quality of one model to another but I get the impression that there are some pretty big differences in quality of fit and finish.
  
  If you are worried how rugged the machine will be then it may be one aspect you should try and investigate more.

- I'm typing this message on a Mini 9 right now. I'm testing it for someone at work.
  
  It's pretty sweet. The build quality on it is awesome. It feels very solid and it's totally silent with the SSD. The fan (if there even is one) never turns on. I have a 16gb ssd in this one and it's more than enough for basic stuff. The screen is really nice and it doesn't require you to squint to see it.

  I have it plugged into a 20" LCD as a second monitor and it works great. The only thing is the resolutions aren't so good with a widescreen that I need to run 1440x1050 and the mini9 only has 1400x1050.
  
  Other than that it's a really nice machine.

- I've got the Acer One with the 6 cell battery pack,120 gb HD, and 1 GB memory, and this little machine is just awesome for its size. Excellent travelling companion, even picks up wi-fi signals better than my bigger laptop.The keyboard is a little different, but, haven't encountered too many difficulties as of yet. Some posters here on RFD have said that this unit gets really hot at times,......and I must that I haven't encountered that yet. I would recommend this little machine to anyone, it is great.
